A warm place to sleep on a cool night
I used my new ENO Vulcan Underquilt with my ENO Double Nest Hammock on a recent Boy Scout Campout. With the underquilt, I stayed "toasty warm" in my sleeping bag. Once, I noticed that the underquilt must have shifted slightly as one of my shoulders suddenly felt cold where my sleeping bag was compressed against the hammock. With only a minor adjustment, made by simply reaching over the side of the hammock, I immediately remedied the cold spot by restoring the insulating capabilities of the underquilt to my hammock. I highly recommend this product.
Warm and Toasty
The Vulcan Underquilt simply does what is advertised. Used with my ENO Double Nest Hammock, this product, along with a good sleeping bag, kept me toasty warm on a Boy Scout campout. I did not suffer "numb butt" that one of the other leaders who slept in his ENO Single Nest Hammock without an underquilt, and I did not complain of "sleeping on a root" that was repeated by several of the scouts. Sleeping in the trees is for me, and this product will let me do so in in cooler weather.
Exactly what I needed
Used this for the first time, on my first campout (mid-november) in Eastern North Carolina. It did exactly what I hoped it would do. Weather was chilly but not too cold and the underquilt kept me toasty all night long with no cold spots. In fact, I had to open up my sleeping bag and eventually just used the bag as a top blanket. I have been sleeping in a hammock for a few years now and this quilt was a going away gift from my Scouts when I moved from the Pacific Northwest to North Carolina. I previously used an air mattress to get insulation but really didn't like the way it slept. This quilt is great. I will now try it out in the colder months this winter. The only issue I had was because I wasn't thorough enough when checking out the quilt at home. The bungee cords that tighten down the ends of the quilt were not tied off and when I started to tighten the cord down around the hammock, one end pulled into the quilt. Had to re-feed it back through. Not really a big deal and it wouldn't have been an issue at all if I had looked more closely when I was playing with it at home. I am a short guy and it was a perfect length for me but I can see where some of my taller camping buddies might like a little more length. The included bag is pretty small but I put it into a different compression sack and got it down very small. Didn't have any issues with getting the loft back when I hung it. All in all I am more than satisfied and can't wait to get back out into the cold to sleep in the trees.
Great investment
I looked for months online but couldn't find an underquilt this size (most are shorter). This one covers both my head and feet with wiggle room. As for packing, it packs incredibly well for not being down fill and is very lightweight. Definitely does what it's supposed to. I first used it to camp out for the REI opening in Knoxville a couple weeks ago. It hit about 30 that night, and I was very warm with it and a 50 degree bag-I even had to take my jacket off! An absolute necessity if you're going to be hammocking in cold temperatures.
Great underquilt
I use my hammock year round and needed a way to keep warm. After trying a cold weather sleeping bag I decided to try this underquilt hoping it was more comfortable. It is. It is made very well and look like it will hold up to regular use. It set up in 30 seconds and was fully adjusted in under 5 minutes. Ive used this every night for 3 weeks with temps down to 30 degrees and have been very happy. I would recommend this product and would buy it again.
Kept me warm down to 40 degrees
I used this Christmas eve at the base of Sequoia National Park. It kept me warm enough while sleeping in a sleeping bag. It does take a little bit of getting used to and you can't lie in the hammock at much of an angle. I'll continue to use it, just have to figure out how to get it around my hammock with a bug net.
Just what the Dr ordered
When I first started hamocking, I struggled with a pad in the hammock, make shift under quilt, and even no quilt. Limited success on all fronts and numerous cold spots while sleeping. Got the under quilt for Christmas and have used it on several trips with the Scouts. What a difference!!! While it takes a bit of fine tuning, it is definitely the bomb! No cold spots, nice and warm underneath! I have been able to keep warm using my mummy sleeping bag (40 + year old White Stag and still rockin') and in warmer times a couple of small fleece blankets. Definitely a good investment!
Glad I had it!
Glad I had the under quilt! worked well in providing that extra bit of warmth at 35F. The only issue I had was that it did slip a bit in the middle of the night so it could likely be operator error vs. a design issue (first time use). One thing I can say for certain is that I felt a big difference where it slipped a bit (cold in that area) but after a quick correction all went well. It is lighter than I expected and compresses well. When going to areas that I can use a hammock, I will not leave home without the under quilt!
A game changer for comfort and warmth
I have used this underquilt on two backpacking trips so far and love it. It's a game changer for comfort and warmth when hammocking. No more feet or shoulder cold spots when rolling off my foam pad in the hammock. I had two rainy and foggy nights where the outside of the quilt got damp and I stayed very warm at ~40 degrees. I haven't tested it in colder temps, but feel confident I would be fine.
Replaced my sleeping pad
Made a 1000 mile trip to go backpacking with my uncle. Going from triple digits everyday to the Olympic National Forest (Washington) i knew the temps would drop way lower then I'm used to. Stopped at every rei in route on my journey from California to Washington. Only the Ember 2 in stock. Seattle had two left. Grabbed one for myself and one for my uncle. Little bulkier then I wanted but picked up some 10liter compression sacks. For the price it's a great deal. At 4000' and temps dropping near freezing a couple nights, stayed so warm I actually only covered my feet on top. With a decent layer I'd say I could comfortably stay warm down to 20* maybe less. Slept in socks shorts and a Patagonia Capilene long sleeve. 30* bag on top unzipped basically covering my feet. Can't wait for the temps to drop so I can push the limits. Gotta know right. I'll update later in the season my low comfort zone. I do tend to sleep warmer then "normal". I'm 6'2" and 220lbs. Never had a single issue with length/ cold spots. Did tie a short piece of cordage on the last loops of the foot side to make a better foot box. Never slipped through the night. Stayed nice and snug. Yes there's more expensive more packable underquilts on the market, but the price for this bad boy!!!! Promise you won't be disappointed. Both my uncle and I slept great. Even at 33* we both were to warm!! Sorry photos won't load
