Remarkable Performance!
After more than 500 miles and 3 Century rides, I am ready to review these Dura-Ace 9000 wheel set. These are one of the lightest (if not the lightest) production wheels you can purchase. They are a fantastic value. I installed them on a 10-speed Ultegra Drive-train using the special cassette spacer Shimano provides you in the wheel set box for 10-speed. These wheels are for 10 and 11 speed drive trains only. I pared them with a Dura-Ace 12-28 Cassette, Dura-Ace chain, Specialized Ultra-Light Pre-Talc tubes, and Continental 4000 RED tires (700 x 23). These wheels are as light as light can get. The Performance has been remarkable. I never expected them to be this great. They replaced two sets of wheels: DT Swiss 3.0 (Specialized OEM)(DT Swiss felt dead in comparison to DA 9000) and Mavic Ksyrium SLR (Mavic's are fast, but not as fast and light as Dura Ace 9000.) My MPH improvement with the DA 9000 C 24, measured on a similar street course—(these are of course estimates): Over 1.25 MPH improvement compared to DT Swiss 3.0. Over .5 MPH improvement compared to Mavic. The acceleration from 0 MPH with DA 9000 is impressive; you will be first out of the gate. I am now a hill climb leader. I pass on the hill but seldom am I passed. Last weekend someone passed me, and when I caught him at the next light, I saw that he had DA 9000 C24 on his bike too. Can't tell yet how they will hold up on the long run yet, but they were true out of the box from Malaysia and still look and perform new after 500 miles. Stability is excellent on 700 x 23 c because Shimano engineered the rear wheel so that the tire sits lower in the rim spreading the tread surface to allow for more road contact. In other words—a 23 c tire performs like a 25 c tire on these rims with no felt rolling resistance at 110 PSI. . I have encountered one problem with these wheels: The group I normally ride with is angry because they can't keep pace with me any longer, so I am riding alone more often these days. I took these wheels to Lake Tahoe a couple of weeks ago for the big 3500 cyclist ride around the lake (72 miles) and I was passing ZIPPS, Cosmics, tons of other Mavics, & Reynolds. Now it could have been the riders or their bikes dragging them, but I had a personal record-breaking performance and a giant smile crossing the finish line, so I as happy as can be. I can't wait to take these wheels to the next event. PS: Wheels come with 2 Shimano Wheelbags, Dura-Ace Skewers, special DA 9000 spoke wrenches, and a Spacer Adapter for 10 speed bike cassettes.
Great wheels, poor buying experience
I've had these on my Tarmac for just a few rides and they're fantastic. They are light and spin up quickly. They are stiff and responsive in corners. I have them fitted with Michelin Pro4 Service Course 25s to get a little softer ride since these wheels aren't known for their compliance. I picked my first set up at the Seattle flagship store where they assured me they came with nothing but the skewers. After reading the other review here I ordered a set to be shipped to another store. They should come with instructions, wheel bags, a metal 10-speed spacer, and spoke wrenches. Happily, the set shipped to the store was in a sealed Shimano box and everything was included.
Braking surface issues?
I ordered a set of these and had them installed at my local REI store. From the first ride, I've noticed that when I apply the front brake, I hear a rhythmic sound plus I feel a very slight wobbling from the front wheel. I thought the rim was a bit out of true so asked the tech to check it. He did make a very small adjustment, but the sound and sensation under braking are still there. The tech told me that this is normal, due to the way Shimano builds/machines the rims. What?! I did not have any such issue with my Mavics (which I now wish I had stayed with). Or for that matter with a Shimano wheelset that was previously on this same bike. I'm disappointed, especially considering the price of this wheelset.
