Great little compass
This is not a toy or novelty item. It works and works well. Perfect for orienting, small, conveniant. and easy to use. It has a rotating bezel with positive clicks which doesn't move and helps you maintain your direction. Unfortunately it doesn't fit either on of my watch bands which are leather and way to thick. It would work nicely on a synthetic or NATO band. But it is such a great little compass this isn't enough to lose points with me. I just put the compass on my backpacks harness strap where it stays on securely. No need to pull out my baseplate compass unless I need it for more serious directions with my topo map.
Excellent clip-on compass
Contrary to what another reviewer wrote, this compass does clip on. Use a strong fingernail to gently pry open the plastic clip (there's no hinge so be gentle) and it will slide onto any thin strap. The plastic clip is strong and holds the compass in place once it's on whatever you clip it to. I purchased one that I have clipped onto a strap on my hydration pack, and I am purchasing a couple more to clip onto map holders. One can never have too many maps or compasses; getting lost in the wilderness is not my idea of a good time. I am so glad to have this little compass with me on all my hiking trips. Functional, reliable, small and lightweight, and downright adorable.
Always have a backup
Like the old saying goes two is one, one is none, always have a back up when hiking/backpacking incase you lose or forget something, we'll I forgot my GPS, I hiked 7 miles to a beach to fish for Striped Bass, on the way back made a rookie mistakes and didn't refill my hydration reservoir and took another trail back, ran out of water wasn't sure where I was, pulled out the trail map and used my Suunto wrist compass to locate a water source.
Very Durable
I have worn this on my watch almost every day for the past year. There are no scratches on the face of the compass. I was very worried that the face would become scratched up since the face is not mineral glass. Rather, the face is this plastic material that somehow resists scratches. The accuracy usually measures within 5-10 degrees of the electronic compass on my phone. It is a good backup in case your phone or gps dies.
Need better design
I was looking for mini compass like this for my watch. But after reading all these reviews, it seems the clipper is a design flaw, so many said they lost this compass in no time at all!! I think I will wait for Suunto to come up with a better design, or look for a better design else where that isn't a clipper, but a mini compass with a loop that a watch band could lace through and compass stays secured in place (see photos).
Reliable ultralight compass
I've used this on a number of long distance backpacking trips, including thru-hiking the Colorado Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail. I've had great luck with Suunto compasses in the past and this is no exception. Despite its size and low weight it's held up well and after years of use it still functions as well as it did on day one. I bought another one for my daughter who will be thru-hiking the Colorado Trail. One caveat: this is a backup navigation tool for me after a phone with offline maps, a GPS device, and a GPS watch with maps. I still view quality and reliability as extremely important. However, if this was my primary navigation tool I'd bring a fancier compass with a baseplate.
Don't let its size fool you!
I am a professional outdoorsman who runs an adventure tour company. I have had one of these on my watch for many, many years. As a dive instructor and national-level canoeing and cycling coach, I can say that this compass has seen me through it all. After a few years, my "Clippers" tend to develop a small air bubble, and it's time for a change - probably cause I use it as a backup to my dive compass. Increasingly, I find myself just referring to the Clipper for everyday general use, orientating tents, anticipating storms (e.g. change in wind direction), etc. My only "complaint" is that I need to file down the sharp points and edges from the molding process so that they don't "cut" into my wrist. Stunt could consider making the clip a little longer too.
Monster Glue to your Casio Watch Band
I monster glue this to my Casio F-91W watch band, so I don’t lose it. Definitely the best compass out there for a watch. My most recent compass popped out of the plastic shell swimming within 6 weeks of having it. I still would recommend it, and have had about 8 of them.
Falls apart
I purchased this compass back in November. Three months after wearing the compass on my watch band, the bezel fell off and the compass fell out. This happened during the day when I didn't notice. I purchased the compass again in March and this time I used epoxy to glue the compass to the base. Again, after three months the bezel and compass fell out. I called Suunto and they offered me 10% off my next purchase. Needless to say, I did not take their cheap offer and will never purchase this compass again. I do not recommend that anyone buy this compass.
This is not your cheapie little compass
No reason not have a small accurate compass with you at ALL times outdoors. This not your usual cheapie little toy compass. This is a quality direction indicating tool. A large compass that is left at home is not doing you any good if/when you need a compass. I plan on buying another of these I like the first one so much.
