Gear check: Three years new, and improved

Excellent wear and tear resistant polyurethane coated nylon. I recreationally use these gaiters to repel mud, snow, and water while trekking. There is slight fraying of the fabric sandwiched between the neoprene molded straps. REI L/XL is the largest Mens size available. NOTE CUSTOM FIT: I seam ripped and hemmed in some scrap nylon fabric. Once sewn back together, I coated where I let out with Silnet. I also cut out the cord, and added a one inch nylon webbing strap. Now I have a much more comfortable XL/XL size. (See pictures) CAUTION: Altering your gear may void REI warranty. Don't attempt this modification unless your confident it will work. If your not sure, consult a professional.

Made for chicken legs.

People who hike a lot and carry a lot of weight have muscular legs, like me. I bought the L/XL , I wear a size 11 boot, and when I tried them on, they were a no go. They did not close around my bare leg and I will need these to close around a pant let. I'll have to make another trip to REI to return these and hope I can find a pair that fit. The quality is good so I'm giving these 3 stars despite not being able to use them.

Why this is different

Not all gaiters are the same. This one is better because (1) it has an adjustable cord on the top rather than a buckle. This is easier to adjust and allows for many more levels of tightness (2) this one has an adjustable cord at the bottom and back that results in a snug and supportive fit for the material above it. It is water proof and breathable like most of the other brands.

Keeps the under brush out !

These gaiters definitely serve their purpose. They keep all the underbrush and sticks and twigs out of your pants and boots. The only downfall I would have to say is that they don't really let your legs breathe. So when I took them off they were covered in sweat. It says they go up to your mid calf but if you have shorter legs like me they go up to your knee.

like a boss

I'm F, 5'5", 120lbs. I'm slim, so I didn't have any of the fit issues that others had. These have been nothing but great for me. They fit perfect around my size 8 boots. I have worn them through rugged backcountry Maui in some very wet conditions. I have only had water come in through the top and bottom, never through the material or velcro. I have never had an issue with them falling down. They are also easy to clean seeds off for contamination control. I have owed these for about 6 months now.

VERY narrow fit in leg

I bought the S/M to fit my size 9 boot. The fit around the foot was excellent, but...I can't close the gaiter around my calf. It's not just snug; there is a 2" open gap before the velcro could even touch, and that was without trouser legs inside. Best try these on before buying.

Disappointing fit

I used my friend's gaiters to hike a few times in Rwanda (they were not REI brand). I loved them, and decided I had to have a set of my own. They kept out the mud, and more importantly, they kept out the fire ants! So, being an REI member, and usually liking REI products, I bought the REI Mountain Gaiters. I had them carried to me for my next adventure in Rwanda, and I was excited to take them out of the package and try them on. That was where my excitement for this product ended. They say they "ensure a snug fit" with a shockcord at the top and the bottom, but the one at the bottom, you can't tighten, so it is not a snug fit over my hiking boots. My shoe size 7.5-8 and I ordered the S/M. These will keep off the mud, but they won't keep things from going up the gaiter – snow, fire ants, etc. Also, tightening the shockcord at the top wasn't the most comfortable closure. The good news is REI has a great return policy, which is one of the reasons I order from them; these gaiters will be going back … but I will order a different brand.

They do not stay up. Fabric not as stiff as old gaiters. The keeper for the strap is to high up. Strap falls out.

Not as good as earlier REI gaiters.

I use these for weedeating at work. When I shift to weed pulling in a squatting position, the elastic cord at the top of the gaiters hurts my legs. I do not like that the cord makes an outside loop when you tighten it. It seems unsafe to have a loop hanging off the gaiters that can get caught on things. The earlier pair of REI gaiters that I use for hiking and snowshoeing have some kind of band elastic at the top. They also have a lace hook that can swivel up and down, and stays put much better than the lace hook on these gaiters. I do not bother hooking the lace hook since it never stays anyway. I bought the LG/XL this time, since I wear size 11 womens shoe. My old ones are small size. So far these gaiters have been durable and they do the job, so I use them three days a week for weedeating at work. I like the extra-wide velcro closure. The elastic cord around the top of the foot seems superfluous, like it accomplishes little.
