I had been eyeballing these for a while. I really like the retro look. Then they arrived and I was disappointed to say the least. Let me tell you why: 1) Packaging: Received mine in a scuffed box. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a return. Cheap feeling box and glasses bag. Would expect more from a pair of shades at this price point. 2) ZERO quality control: Now, correct me if I'm wrong. But the most unique feature about these shades is the leather on the front and sides. Mine was missing the nose bridge leather!! (see pic). I checked the box and the shipping package. Nothing. Come on. Are you serious? How do you miss the main feature that's front and center on a small piece like this. Pathetic. Seriously. 3) Cheap feeling build and not very comfortable. I do have a big head but all my Ray Bans are off the shelf and fit comfortably. These produce quite a bit of pressure at the temples. The hook shape seems like it would be useful, but even these are uneven and asymmetric. Again, not what I would expect from a pair of shades at this price point. I would liken the quality to something you'd find at a gas station. SUMMARY: Cheap feeling and zero quality control. I am completely at a loss for how these became a classic. They have a great look, but I think the company is relying on that and cutting some major corners. I am returning ASAP and can say this will likely be my first and last online Julbo purchase. You have been warned!

Great now, but......

We got these along with their Cham glacier glasses . We have enjoyed Julbo glasses over the years and this was my first venture back into their classic glacier glasses since the 70s. Within a few weeks of use, one arm broke. A previous reviewer indicated that the arm would not stay in the its rubber housing. That is because the braided flexible arm has broken off of at or near its rigid arm located closer to the lens. I assumed initially that this was just a manufacturing error and ignored my better-half's suggestion to weld the other non-broken side while I was at it. I would regret not listening to her a few weeks later when that arm broke also. Attached are some pics on how to repair the broken arm. In short, cut off existing tubing, use a liquid weld with catalyst to reconnect (epoxy is too brittle) and cover with a piece of shrink and medical tubing. I now have a good pair of Julbo Glacier glasses. If you are not prepared to do this, don't buy them. The arms will break with use. Even now i am careful with them as i use two hands to remove my glasses. The arm sees multiple forces with use (i.e. compression, tension and torsional) and is not made with sufficient robustness as to withstand them after a short period of use. Not the quality we had come to expect from Julbo. The arms of the Cham appear to be more robust. We have yet to try them though.

Highly functional for the discerning dirt bag

I've been wearing these since about 1990. Climb High used to be the importer for Julbo, and being from Vermont I had a working relationship with them. They gave me a pair to "test" as a "pro climber", lol. Loved 'em. Been wearing them ever since. They take prescription lenses, double as ski goggles if you need them to, and don't fall off when you look down to see how far above your last placement you are. You'll look like a blind beggar, but you won't need to squint anymore. I don't recommend mirrored lenses however. They look cool, but act like a solar oven and will cook your nose if you're out on a glacier in sunny conditions. Hope that helps

Awesome!

These are by far the best pair of sunglasses I have ever worn. The category 4 lenses are exceptionally dark, and provide excellent visual clarity while eliminating all eye strain. Additionally, once adjusted, they are exceedingly comfortable. They are so light, and tailor-made, that most times i forget I'm even wearing them. The retro styling definitely makes you stand out from the crowd, but that is part of their charm. Be careful if you intend to use them while driving, the dark "spectron 4" lenses and the side shields, limit peripheral vision and tend to hide darker objects in shadows. However, on bright days these are perfect for the beach, high alpine slopes, glaciers, and around the house.

Excellent Old-School Glacier Glasses

I contacted Julbo last year about reissuing old-school glacier glasses and was thrilled when they wrote back to tell me about the Vermont Classics to be released on January 30th, 2013. I quickly ordered a pair and I absolutely love them. The classic retro-style fits my personal tastes well, and the leather side shields and nose bridge are extremely comfortable. The Spectron 4 lenses are perfect and distortion free. These are just like the glacier glasses I remember wearing in the 1970's and 1980's. Excellent eye wear for those who have an affinity for the past but still want highly functional outdoor eyewear. The lenses, side shields and nose bridge are all easily removable for cleaning, repair or adjustment. The frames have small thumbscrews at the top which make field servicing easy. Just a note that being true glacier glasses, peripheral vision is restricted. Also the Spectron 4 lenses are very dark to prevent snow blindness, so casual use on cloudy days or in average or dim light is not recommended. Julbo recommends that these not be used for driving.

"Glacier" Eye Protection

I have had a pair of these glasses since I started backpacking and high-altitude hiking back in the 70's. The side panels help prevent UV damage. The lenses are max UV blockage. Though they are designed for eye protection on snow or glaciers when reflected light intensifies the potential damage, they are excellent protection when at higher altitudes where UV filtration by the atmosphere is decreased. They are not designed for use when driving as the side panels block peripheral vision.

Best sunglasses evah (don't loan them out)

I had a pair years ago and I'm glad that Julbo brought them back. Years ago in high school, I loaned my pair to my girlfriend. Cool, right? Wrong! We broke up and she kept them. Now that Julbo has re-released them I just had to buy one. Needless to say, I am not loaning these out. As for the sunglasses, they are everything that I remember them to be...super comfortable, cool looking, and protective of the eyes.

Very poor quality on the frame, as the rubber keeps getting pulled back. I am really disappointed.

OWAA writer's review- Julbo Glacier sunglasses

Recommend the brown lenses for my Alaska and Kodiak friends, and the darker black for those loving the snow or climbing. Really would be better to have a polarazion lens, but sufficent for snowboarders to climbers to hikers or seriously engaged in alpine endevours. If your life takes you - off the grid. These will fit your style nicely! Best Regards, OWAA Outdoor Writer... JOE GUIDE
