Not great in stormy weather!
We are Thule fans. I have a 2017 Outback and I bought the extended Thule racks to allow room for a kayak, SUP and this Thule roof box. I have used it on only two cross-country trips. The nose tends to lift up in winds and opens just enough to expose my gear. The last trip the locks and latches were acting up so I used 2 Thule kayak straps to keep the box secure and put anything that needed to keep dry in garbage bags. The nose still opened up with weather and my allowed water into the box. I appreciate the Thule box...but it was a constant hassle. I hope this box was replaced by a new version that will stay closed and actually keep everything dry.
Functions exactly as expected.
We use the prodcut on camping trips from California to Montana. We usually also have a large kayak with us and a bike or 2 so this long, fairly think roof box fits the bill perfectly. the new design on the attachment brackets are easier than our last one. On our last trip it held 5 sleeping bags, 2 large air mattresses 3 life vests, 3 small backpacks and our fishing poles. I wish it was white instead of black so it wouldn't heat up so much on hot, sunny days.
Great roof top box and easy to use
I installed it on my Rav 4 with factory bars in under a minute. Opens from both sides minimal wind noise and no noticeable gas mileage drop. I drove from Anchorage to Fairbanks and it rained, sleeted, and snowed and the contents inside the box stayed dry!Great service from REI Anchorage as they helped me carry it out to my car!
Frustrating Dual-Sided Hinge Design
STAY AWAY FROM DUAL SIDE MODELS! First let me say that in general Thule makes great stuff but unfortunately the "feature" of opening on both sides is completely unnecessary and design tradeoffs resulted in an inferior and frustrating design. Go buy a single sided model with better hinge design. The hinges and key locks are the weakness. Getting it closed is sometimes like wrestling with an octopus and is best accomplished with two people. There are only three little points latching each side and the front and back ones have little interlock buttons which are difficult to engage because the whole cover warps and the spring mechanisms fight against each other. Since we use it for carrying skis, standing on the tires in the dark and cold fighting with the lid and trying to get the key to turn is infuriating. Once we accidentally managed to get both sides unlatched and had to remove it from the car and use both keys and wrestle the thing back together to get at least one side closed. On the positive side, the clamps fastening the box to the car's cross bars are robust and very user friendly. It also generates very little wind noise. I never invest the effort to write reviews but I hope this helps someone avoid spending big bucks on a box they will curse with each use.
Great box
This is a perfect box for skis. It will fit skis up to about 195 or so. It is big enough to fit 6 pairs of adult skis and poles. Very simple to install. One person can do it. I was able to install it on my 99 outback so that the back liftgate opens all the way, but it doesn't stick out too much over the front window. The locking system works great. perfect ski box!
Thule Force Alpine Cargo Box
PURCHASED AT THE SEATTLE STORE. ROBERT HELPED WITH MOUNTING IT TO OUR NEW SUBARU OUTBACK. PERFECT MATCH SIZE WISE. DROVE HOME TO MARYSVILLE. THE BOX IS DEAD QUIET. UNLIKE THE YAKIMA SKYBOX I PREVIOUSLY OWNED. THAT BOX, A 16 BOUNCED LIKE A BABY ON GRANDPAS LAP AND WAS VERY NOISY. THIS BOX DID NOT MOVE AT ALL AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO MATCH THE BOX TO YOUR CAR. LARGER BOXES WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A GOOD MATCH FOR THE OUTBACK.
Holds a ton!
We're very happy with this overall. Our local REI installed it on the spot! We put two sets of golf clubs (one of which was pretty bulky), a baby bike seat and a huge beach tent. We really like that it opens on both sides. Only complaint is that one of the keys broke off in the lock within a few days. Husband emailed Thule and there isn't a really easy resolution. Good thing it opens on either side!
Another solid Thule product.
I use this box on an Subaru Outback to transport skis, golf clubs and anything else that fits up there. Lightweight, easy open/close/lock, easy on/off, simple to use clamshell claw attachment system, no leaks or squeaks, ...just a simple, well designed box!
Fits 2014 Forester Perfectly
Goes on in minutes, fits skis up to 192cm, and fits perfectly on a 2014 forester with a spoiler. Has plenty of room for 5-6 pairs of skis or a ton of luggage in the summer.
Good roof box but has some flaws
I put it through the ultimate American test; a cross-country move from Maryland to California in just 3 days, averaging about 900 miles a day. I have since used it a number of times. Here are some notes: It's very easy to install on crossbars and you can do it yourself, especially on a sedan. The roof box is a manageable 36 or so pounds and the attachment system uses dials that close or open the latch claws. It's very secure once properly on the cross bars. The actual roof box opening and closing mechanism is clumsy. The hinges open on either side but aren't smooth in operation. You sometimes have to put in some effort because the two hinges don't like to open simultaneously. It's very difficult to open unless the roof box is attached firmly to the cross bars. For the price these go for, why aren't there ball bearings in the hinges for super-smooth operation? There too much resistance as is and the hinges hardly ever open easily together. The locking mechanism is good however and locks rather reliably the first time and use three locking points on each side. Wind noise isn't bad until you go over 75 MPH. Past that point, it can get noisy but not terrible. Fuel economy hit isn't bad. It's likely no more than 1 or 2 MPGs. It's not waterproof. In constant rain at high speeds, water will get in and collect at the bottom. I usually put items in water resistant bags in the roof box. I think the wind pushes the rain water inside. If it was parked, I have doubts water would get inside the box. Overall, it's a good product and I don't regret buying it. I considered rivals and other models but this one came out top in capacity, weight, length, features, etc. for my specific use for my sedan. It's a little pricey but if you get it on sale, it's okay. So overall, great cross bar attachment, good locking mechanism, and fair hinge mechanism. Not waterproof at freeway speeds.
