Great bag, but description is wrong
Having started climbing this year, I was obviously on a gear hunt. My friend, and experienced climber, used a discontinued Black Diamond bag that was 40 liters, and I decided to get one the same size so I could grow into it, and thought this would be a great fit. However, once it arrived, I could only fit my 70m rope, a carabiner, and my GriGri in it. My friend and I compared it to his 40L bag and realized this is waaay smaller. After doing some digging on the actual Metolius website, this is a 29 liter bag, so it is missing 11 entire liters of capacity that what was listed here. That being said, the bag is solid and great if you are using a 30m-40m rope. The quality is wonderful, I like the construction, and it seems like it will last a long time. The only issue is with how REI is listing the product.
Great design
I like the design, I can get a 70m rope, shoes, harness and decent amount of gear for anchor building in. Nice pocket for things like keys and a cell phone. I don't love the shoulder straps, and would likely get uncomfortable for longer approaches
Good for short hikes
I bought this bag a few months ago and love it, my 80 m rope and all my QuickDraws fit easily into it, not quite big enough to get my harness on there too but that hasn’t been a problem since I’m always with other people. My only concern is that there isn’t a chest or waist strap, and my rope is heavy, so on a long hike/backpacking in to a climb it would not be super comfortable. However the straps are padded and comfortable enough for the 20 min hikes to our crags
Awkward size for real crag bag
This bag is well made but in the uncanny valley of pack size — too small to serve as a standalone pack that fits a 70m rope + gear, snacks, and water, but takes up a lot of unnecessary space if used for just one rope. The straps are also uncomfortable on long approaches when fully loaded. The ideal use for this would be as a gym rope bag. After several years of making due, I’m planning on replacing mine with a burrito style bag that can easily fit in one of my larger backpacks without taking up excessive space.
Keeps the rope clean and tight
I bought an 80 meter, 9.5 mm rope (a huge rope) and it fits nicely, with room to put my quickdraws and a few other odds and ends in. Big tarp which is nice for keeping it clean and off the ground
Great bag so far.
I have used the bag a few time now and really enjoy it. So much easier to carry and care for my rope. Keeps it much cleaner. I like that It pulls tight to keep weather and dirt out of the bag. Comfortable straps. Looks and feels like a quality build.
Great gym bag
This bag is perfect for the gym. It easily fits a 40m rope, harness, shoes and chalk bag.
Novel shape and function
Great rope bag. The shape and backpack design work well getting to and from the crag. The incorporated rope tarp with rope end loops make it a snap setting up and stacking your rope, while the zipper design and shape of the bag make rolling the rope into the tarp and bag at the end of the day a snap as well - especially if it starts raining. A great value for the price.
Close to perfect!
Love this rope bag. The only thing it’s missing is a 2nd tie off loop and would be 5 stars if it had that… as is I’d say 4.5 stars for sure.
Best rope bag you can buy
This rope bag is fantastic. Feels durable, it’s comfortable, and I genuinely enjoy using it. The drawstring is a bit too thick for the drawstring clamp, so it makes an unpleasant sound when synching it up, but after a few dozen climbs it hasn’t broken yet. I recommend this bag to everybody. Probably one of the best climbing investments I’ve ever made.
