I too had the REI 3.5 Camp Mat but less than a year later it began leaking! If REI can fix that issue, I would go back to it in a heart beat as it was VERY comfortable. The 3" Thermarest Lux. Mat is also comfortable but that extra 1/2 inch of padding in the REI mat really makes a difference. The other issue with the Thermarest is it seems a bit narrow. I have the "Long" mat which is a bit wider than the regular. None the less it seems to be a fine mat and comfortable thus far. Sometimes I have to sleep on the floor because of low back trouble and hence the reason for a comfortable mat. At the risk of sounding like Goldie Locks the Thermarest makes the floor/ground just right!
This sleeping pad was being used at home for a few months before taken on a camping trip. I had moved from state to state and had no comfy bed to sleep on, so I checked out the supply at REI and found the Luxury pad. The pad was used everyday on the ground and was kept inflated for over 2 months straight and kept up perfectly! It is well built and is extrememly durable and comfortable! For a 6'0" male at 190lbs it held up quite nicely. If you plan to use it for camping or backpacking, it doesnt store well in a pack because its big! I wouldn't recommend it for trips like that, but I would definitely recommend it for camping trips where you drive to a location and can pack it in your vehicle. This sleeping pad is of the highest quality and is definitely recommended.
For car/van camping, and my nomadic touring-musician life, I haven't found a more comfortable travel bed out there. My road-weary body is so grateful and actually feels like it's sleeping in a real bed for a change. I would also recommend this as a guest-bed far and above the inflate-a-mattresses, futons, and fold-out-couches too many people offer. Now if only they could magically make a featherlight version for overseas travel and backpacking ~ but part of its appeal is its solidity and girth (I have the XL). Still, it packs reasonably small enough for vehicle transport, which is currently my primary need.
Used this camping last weekend and all I can say is "wow!" I've used many Thermarest pads over the years and this one is by far my favorite. First off, it self inflates, which is great, but you have to plan accordingly. When you are setting up camp, make sure to unroll it, open the valves, and let it begin inflating. After a couple hours, simply blow a couple breaths in and you're all set. As for the comfort, we were camping on hard ground in the Ozarks. I slept well all night and didn't feel sore in the morning. The weather was mild, so I can't say much about its heat retaining values in winter, but it did a great job keeping me warm during a downpour. Only complaint is that the stuff sacks are a little small. You really have to roll it up tight to get them in there. Highly recommended for those who favor comfort over compact pads.
Age plays havoc on all of us, and I have grown to need comfort in my travels. I camp off my dual sport motorcycle and this works great! Good size, easy to pack on the bike, inflates easy, and is comfortable. Soft, yet on my side, my hips are not grinding into the ground. Great little mini mattress.
I replaced an REI 3.5" pad (avoid 'em) with this one. It is an awesome car-camping/boating pad. Its far to big and heavy to pack anywhere, but it is great when you don't have to carry it. Ive used it over a year and it has no leaks, etc. Great pad.
This is THE pad for getting a good night sleep. I have slept on this pad over 180 nights over the last three years (I am a wildland firefighter on a hand crew, so camping is in my job description), and it has performed like none I have used prior. I have slept on top of branches and uneven terrain, and this sleeping pad renders the condition of the ground moot. Is it heavy and bulky? Yes, it is both. Is it worth it? Without a doubt. In addition to comfort, it is very durable and quiet. I purchased these pads for my crew and out of 15 pads over three years and 180+ nights, only one has developed a leak. It doesn't make a lot of noise with night time shifts (I don't have the best back, so rotate often), which is a bonus for sleeping with others or proximity to other tents. I would hesitate to bring it on long backpacking trips, but if you skimp on a few other areas, you can manage your weight and still get in a good night. Overall, the best sleeping pad I have ever used.
I hadn't been camping in years and recall how sleeping on the ground (air mattress or sleeping pad) was always a big unknown (comfort vs. agony). The Therm-a-Rest LuxuryMAP Sleeping Pad was an 'out-of-the-box' winner the first night. It took seemingly seconds to expand and a couple of puffs to inflate to my liking, and then a night on the ground that ultra-comfortable. No low spots; no grounding out on the shoulders or hips; no chill from the ground - all-in-all, the LuxuryMAP totally lived up to its name. I can't wait to get out and use it again, and now ground camping is back on my outdoor adventure agenda!
I bought this to take to retreats, where I usually end up on the floor on some terrible, stinky foam excuse for a mattress and my hip goes right to the floor. I'm also a raving insomniac and the reluctant host of a never-ending stream of house-guests. After searching through many stores, I sprang for this -- and happy to report my hip and back both love it, but unfortunately all the house-guests too (hey, I'm in Hawaii). This is by far the best compact mattress I've ever found, it's amazing. It has to be enshrined in my panthéon of the great finds of my life, along with a down vest or two, a Nexus tablet, "The River" by Springsteen, a Volvo 122S (and of course, my wife, though I didn't actually BUY her). Forget schlepping it around much, it's something you'd take from the car a few hundred yards to a campsite, so you may as well go long if you're tall, like me. Honestly, I could be happy using it as my primary bed -- it's great! [By the way, the only reason I'm on here looking at the thing is that some house-guests went home with their dirty undies the stuff sack. But I still have the mattress.]
I have the Luxury-Map-XL This is the largest one they make. I started with the "L" but fell off it when I rolled over and it woke me up (While testing it at home). The XL just fits in to a "sans bug one man tent" (the corners slightly folded about an inch) this was perfect for me. I used the Mattress on a mission trip to Honduras. The Therm-a-rest Mattress was recommended by name by those who have been on this trip in the past. As well as the mentioned bug tent. The tent offered a bit of protection for the bottom of the mattress and some protection from sharp objects. I read the directions the day I took the mattress home and allowed it to inflate over several days. I also allowed it to stay inflated in the days before the trip. When I was ready to use it on the trip it only took a short time to inflate, a few good breaths and it was ready to use. Although I had choices as to where to sleep, it would be on a bare concert floor (upstairs in the construction area or down stairs on hard tile) I chose out side on a concert porch so I could see the stars. The mattress keep me insulated form the concert very well. When I first layer down to sleep it was almost 88 degrees at 10:00 P.M. but by 5:00 A.M. it had dropped to below 70 degrees. The mattress never felt cloud and I never made contact with the hard concert even after rolling from back to side to stomach all night long. The 3" pad was enough to support me comfortably in all sleeping positions. and I am a big person, about 240 lbs. This pad will fit in a suit case if packed first diagonally, then pack other stuff around it. My comment to those who feel this mattress does not inflate properly or quickly enough is, "Read the instructions first". The mattress preforms as it says it will the way it says it will if treated the way is says to treat it. This might be big for back packers.
