Coveted around the campfire
I bought this chair because of a sale. It turns out they have the perfect recline. Our 2 chairs were the topic of conversation around the campfire and coveted by all. Typically the back of a camp chair is so vertical that its not comfortable, but these beauties have just the right recline so you can feel as lazy, while camping, as you do at home... They also don't come with those pesky bags that you either lose or can never fit the chair back into. Multy use straps to carry by hand at your waste or a longer one to sling over your shoulder. Highly recommended!

These chairs are GARBAGE!
I ordered a large quantity of these chairs for my employees to use for our summer field work. Within a few weeks of using these chairs they started to fall apart. There are two main seams that go along the back of the chair to the bottom. These two seams started to tear on a majority of the chairs we bought. This caused at least a 12”-16” hole in the bottom of the chair making it impossible to sit in. Another flaw the chair has is the four connection points (the feet) where the legs come together at. The plastic feet break easily and the pins holding the legs in the feet fall out easy causing the chair to collapse when you sit in it. I guarantee you that one of these defects will happen if you buy this chair. Don’t waste your money or time with this chair. You will end up having to return it for an exact replacement (that will just break again) or upgrade. Save some time and just buy a different chair!

This is the perfect camp chair

WHY WHY WHY did you people stop selling this chair? This is the best camp chair that has ever been or ever will be. It is one of the handful of perfect things I own. Comfortable but not cushy, small but supportive, light but strong, affordable but high quality. Has a strap instead of some stupid bag. You can slouch down to relax and sit up if you want to eat something. I now wish that I bought all of them that I could find. Mine is finally starting to wear out after at least a decade of faithful service and exposure to extremes of weather. Bring this thing back, for now I have nothing. Nothing. NOTHING...

Very comfortable (but cup/bottle holder too small)

Although I have not yet tried the chair when camping, I have tried it indoors and it seems to be very comfortable. I also have an older Rei mesh camp chair which is extremely uncomfortable not to mention heavy so this new one is a definite improvement in comfort and weight. However, unlike my mesh chair which has a drawstring adjustable cup holder which will accommodate any size beverage container, the cup holder in this chair does not work with my favorite camping beverage container-namely my recycled plastic Rei coffee/tea mug! Suggestion to Rei - change the cup holder in this nice chair to the much larger adjustable design.

Would purchase again

The back of the chair makes you feel like you are slightly reclined -- much welcomed after a long day of hiking (it's not stiff and upright like a lot of these type of chairs). Thick, sturdy material that's easy to clean. Quick to dry after if left in the rain. Stands up well to gusts of wind (in a surprise desert storm that began with gusts of 50 mph or more, this chair held its ground while it's offbrand $10 companion on the trip folded under the wind and wound up flying around). The clip used to make a shoulder strap is a convenient feature however I found the clip to be hard to hook and unhook quickly. Usually had to wrestle with it for 2-3 minutes.

Seat Ripped at Stitching

Seat ripped at stitching after one year and three months. I purchased three chairs and one is coming apart at stitching. As REI only has one year warranty, they refused to replace the chair while I was at San Diego store. I only purchased these REI brand chairs thinking they had a longer warranty policy. REI brand items seem to have ok quality, but not great, therefore slightly less expensive price, although this chair is not exactly inexpensive. Now with the restrictive warranty policy, I see no reason to buy this REI brand chair, or any REI gear for that matter. The carry strap on the chair is nice, but durability is lacking.

Best-est / Cheapest

I haven't been camping since backpacking day's in college. I went camping w/ a bunch of friends that were very experienced campers; they were geared up & well stocked, but I needed a few things for the trip. The REI Camp Compact Chair is truly the best camp chair in it's price range you can find. It worked great, is comfortable enough and easy to fold up. This chair fit right in w/ the other chairs the real experienced campers were using. I'm sure you can spend 2 to 3 times more and get a more comfortable camp chair, but you won't find a better chair anywhere close to the regular price of this camp chair. Not very light & you won't want to carry it w/ other stuff a long way, but great for car camping. I look forward to using it at outdoor concerts

Very good for a short time

I like this chair for having a solid material, a durable appearance and being well sized. After light use during the past 15 months there is now a seam breaking in the seat. I thought REI stands behind their products. I'll have to exchange it. Ha! Only for 12 months! Worthless unless your product is broken when you unbox it. After decades of exceptional quality with product durability don't expect REI to stand for quality these days. Just another pretty face. Nothing different here that you could not get at Cabela's, Dick's or Target. Keep shopping.

Lots of nice options for compact folding chair

As the children's outdoor sporting events start back up again, I was faced with needing a new camp chair. Spotted this one at REI while shopping. The chair is sturdy and feels comfortable for my 210lb frame. I love that this chair, instead of a dumb 'storage bag' has simply a carabiner and shoulder strap. Game over, I can stand-up and clip the legs together and go. No bag that will eventually rip out the bottom. My only complaint is that the back is a wee bit shorter than expected. Leaning back, the chair hits a little below my shoulder blades.

Our go-to chair!

When I first ordered this chair two years ago, my wife and kids tried it out and immediately decided they hated it. The chair is compact - the seat ends mid-thigh, and the back does not reach to the top of our shoulders, let alone support the head (we're all average height). Somehow, none of that matters for comfort. Maybe it's the slightly reclining position. I've used this chair for hours at a time, very happily. The chair has grown on the rest of the family, and now that everyone wants to use it, I'm back to order a couple more. The best feature is the carrying system - a built-in strap and clip. Takes about three seconds to pack up. (The lack of the bag makes it a bit untidy in a cluttered car, but it's a worthwhile trade-off). Reviewers who say the cup holder is too small for large cups or bottles are correct.

Hall of Fame Camp Chair

I have owned 4 of these chairs and found them so incredibly awesome that I bought 4 more as a housewarming gift for friends after they installed at outdoor fire pit. We—and they—are still using them. But we need this to be brought back into production because the seats are wearing out from normal wear and tear. This chair deserves a spot in the REI Product Hall of Fame for its comfortable low back, light weight, portability and built in strap! But, unlike The Kid, this chair needn’t be out of production to enter the HOF: bring it back!!
