Seeking a small pack without too much bulky padding I looked at a lot of packs before buying this one. The exterior side pockets are deep which help to secure items such as a spectacle case or umbrella. My main complaint is with the zipper of the main compartment. The large (1 inch) overlap of fabric is easily trapped in the zipper. (See photo) This is a fairly basic design issue for ANY zipper and I'm surprised a major manufacturer such as Osprey would slip up on it. The problem can be alleviated somewhat by folding back the complete flap of overlapping fabric, but this detracts from the look of the pack. I was keen to find a pack with small interior pockets, and although there are two of them (see photo) they lack a zipper closure to secure small items such as coins. A zipper on one of these would be a very useful improvement to the pack. The external slot for hydration bladder is a handy place to stash a magazine or newspaper.
I bought this last year specifically with the intention of using it as an add-on pack for my Osprey Aether 85 pack. It's designed to integrate onto the back of the pack (see pictures) to expand your carrying capacity. I was looking for such a large-capacity pack combination to allow me to carry the majority of the gear for myself and two of my young children who can't yet carry much for themselves. This has been fantastic for that, plus I have the versatility of two packs, rather than just one ridiculously large pack that has only that one application. I've loved the ability to integrate, but also use both packs as standalone, hardy, indispensable pieces of gear.
I'm 6'4" and use this pack for running to work with Dell XPS 13 laptop, which fits perfectly in an interior pouch. The distance is 3 miles and the pack is equally stable at sprint or slower run. There's room to also carry some lunch and spare clothes, but not much more. This seems to be a perfect use for the pack. It was also comfortable and functional on 20 mile mixed road and trail run. I can't reach anything in the pack from the front, but I figure that encourages me to stop and take actual breaks now and then. Water bottles and snacks are easy to access in the outer pockets once the pack is off. Overall build quality is high. The pack sems like a great value at the price.
So most of the reviews seem to be of this pack as a stand alone pack. It works great as a stand alone pack like others have said so I won't spend time talking about that. I love this pack as an add-on to my Aether 85. I have always had issues with what to do for a day pack on backpacking trips. This makes day trips away from base camp easier. Having it attach to the pack both increases the packs over all capacity as well as gives you a day pack that is actually comfortable. This is something that you don't see too often in backpacking packs. I am surprised other companies aren't making their own versions of this. It is a wonderful idea and it actually works.
I LOVE THIS BAG, so easily you can use it for a day hike or even just daily use, I use it daily the sleeve inside is great for a tablet or a small macbook, it has huge water bottle pockets they are great for large 36 oz camelbak bottles it has two compartments the body of the bag is very roomy and larger then it looks from the outside, the smaller pocket has two smaller mesh pockets inside and a small hook, it's very light I used it on a short hike a week after I got it and it fits all my day hike gear no problem, oh and also there's a little whistle on the chest strap buckel.
I've had this daypack for about 5-6 months and it is absolutely heavenly. I've used it for everything from 10 mile full day hikes to quick 3 mile short trips. I've used in the dead of summer in the middle of the desert (SE Utah) and it's always been very cool and I will be taking it up to Nome, AK with me for the winter as well. It's always comfortable and has more than enough room to fit 3-4 liters of water (usually a 2 liter bladder and 1-2 1 liter bottles), my heavy duty first aid kit (as required for my job), a rain jacket, my multi-tools, and a decent sized lunch. I would say I've put this pack through some pretty heavy use and it's still in just as good condition as the day I got it. I'm incredibly happy with this pack.
Originally, I was looking for a simple, well-constructed bag that would be great for everyday use -- on the trail, going to the gym, airplane carry on. This is exactly what I got! However, after using this bag for a few days, I realized that it isn't what I was looking for -- I'd rather spend an extra $20-30 for a bag with more bells & whistles (ie. these straps have VERY light padding and this pack is sorta water resistant -- okay in light rain/mist but gets wet in harder rain). Overall, this is a very nice and simple bag that is swell for quick trips on the trail or to the gym -- exactly what I was looking for but turns out, not really what I really wanted.
I wasn't even looking for a pack when I was in the store, but I saw this was on sale and picked it up. I've used it twice so far skiing (even though it isn't designed for that), but it was nice to have my stuff with me. It's small and light enough that it didn't get in my way. I'm sure I'll be using it for my day hikes. I have an REI daypack that I've been using and love, but when I don't need to carry a lot of stuff, this will be my go-to pack.
My husband and I each have a Daylite pack for day hiking. It is great to have just enough space for a hydration reservoir (I have a 2L and he has a 2.5L with no issues of bulkiness when wearing the packs with a full reservoir), some snacks, and perhaps lunch. We normally also have enough room to put in any layers we may shed while hiking. I have not had a problem with an extra water bottle falling out of the pack when I lean over which is mentioned often in the reviews. I feel if you had a large Nalgene that it would be a difficult fit and would fall out but I just have a 16oz Brita Water Bottle I carry just in case I need more than my reservoir (or the dog needs more water than she carries in her pack). We both have the Ariel and Aether packs and have attached them successfully but never with both packs completely full. It is not difficult to attach them once you find the little loops on the big pack. I would probably suggest if they're both going to be full to attach the Daylite while both are empty and then fill the bags.
I've hiked TONS of miles with this bag on my back and it has worked out perfectly. It holds all of the essentials for a day hike, breathes well and fits comfortably. The material is tough and lightweight. If you're looking for a simple, no-nonsense hiking backpack, look no further.
