The Best
I have owned many, many, many mittens in my life. Mittens are much warmer than gloves and they can save your digits and your life. This is my 2nd pair of Alti-Mitts and not because the first wore out, because I am afraid of going through an Alaskan Winter without them. I can spend the entire day outside, and they are flexible so I can actually use my hands. When its not minus 30 F and a balmy 20 F, I can wear just the liners. Are they worth $200. bucks a pair. Resoundingly yes. If you live in a really cold place you need great boots, great snow pants, a good hat, a parka and ALTI- MITTS. They are water proof too!
Extremely warm in subzero conditions
These are fantastic mittens, incredibly warm. Though I've not had them in as cold conditions as some other reviewers, I was glad of them this last weekend when it was -25C (-13F) out in the mountains. They are exceptionally warm and your hand warms up very quickly (from frozen numb, say after taking a pic or tying your shoe). I usually only use the inner mitten, which is more than warm enough for biking around the city in winter (which can be -5C to -10C) and I add the outer layer when out in the hills at temps below that. Haven't had them in the rain but they're goretex so I imagine they'd stay dry. Thoroughly recommended - just don't lose them because they're pricey!
Great mittens
Have had to repair and now have worn out the inner mitten and would love to replace as the outer mitten is in perfect shape. Unfortunately, inner liners are not sold separately. Please consider doing so.
Still taking names 4 years later
I’ve had these mitts for about 4 years now. I live in Minnesota and a few times a year we dip below -30 and that is when I really like to put the gear to the test. They are holding up strong, after about 4 months of use they really broke in nicely. The other benefit is that you don’t have to use the liner glove for complete warmth. I often times use a pair of mechanix gloves underneath whether I’m taking pics, snowshoe, extreme cold weather camping (-30 to -60) btw. We set the record for -77 windchill about 3 weeks ago. No complaints. They are bigger and may not be the best for edc gloves, but it is nice being able to toss those bad boys on when I’m warming up the car heading home from work and my hands are instantly toasty.
Worth every penny!
This was a gift to myself... These gloves are insanely warm, well built, and verstile. This past year in MN has been burtal, however it has provided a ton of great opportunities to really put these to the test. The coldest I have had these outside has been -23f with a windchill of -52f. I do a lot of winter hiking and spend a fair amount of time outside- both active and standing/sitting while ice fishing etc. The sizes run a little big, however just buy a size smaller than you think you need. As warm as they are, they also warm up fast... I tend to run hot so I will remove the inside liner and pack that away, and just wear the shell, which is PLENTY warm. In fact either glove can be worn alone and still be sufficient. Overall these gloves were exspensive (def. the most exspensive i've ever bought), but worth every PENNY! I look forward to many many years ahead!
Only $20 a finger
First use of new mittens today coming down Ascutney in S VT. 9 degrees with mild wind and snow flurries. I have Renaud's Syndrome, so my hands and feet get cold easily; once cold they stay cold. Once my hands warmed up from having lunch wearing my liner gloves the OR Altai were toasty as I walked down. Worth every penny to be able to have been out today and future cold days.
OR Alti Mittens
A very warm mitten. Probably a bit overkill but have used on Rainier, Adams, and Hood. Fingers were warm and sometimes too warm. Grip is very good for mittens for griping(ice axe trek poles)Starps are great for cinching mitt tight against your jacket. A bit pricy but a great product
Seriously Warm
These mitts keep me seriously warm and I don't need chemical hand warmer packets. So far I have only tested them to -16 Fahrenheit with a -40 windchill but they kept my hands nice and toasty after a few hours outside. I really like the adjustable leash option. It is nice because you can choose to use the leash or not. Some gloves have that big wide elastic leash that must be worn at all times when wearing the glove/mitt but this design is much more desirable. The SuperCinch gauntlet closure feature is top notch. These mitts are seriously so easy to tighten and loosen the gauntlet. It is the best closure system I have ever seen on a glove/mitten. Keep the warmth in and keep the snow out! I tend to wear these with a very thin moisture wicking liner so I can pull my hands out when I need high dexterity to grab keys out of my pocket or something of that nature. That being said, the dexterity with the mitts on is better than I expected. I can still start up and operate the choke on my snowblower just fine while wearing these mitts. If you are considering buying these mitts, do it. They are worth every penny and I am extremely happy with my purchase. If you live in a cold climate they are a must have. I could not be happier with my purchase. Your hands will thank you.
Very warm but no dexterity
Very warm and tough mitt. However, it is impossible to do anything once you have them on. I haven't tried, but I suspect you could do little more than push/pull an ascender up a fixed rope with these. I CAB attest that it is impossible to belay, hold a beverage, undo a small buckle, or even hold a trekking pole reliably. I tried a smaller size and had the same problem. I am keeping one pair because they are so dang warm. When I'm ice climbing in a team of three or more and don't have to climb OR belay, these are great for staying warm while waiting my turn. However, they aren't practical for anything else, except, perhaps 7000+ meter peaks.
Kept my hands warm on Kilimanjaro Summit Night
These kept my hands very warm in -20 degrees, snow storm weather on Kilimanjaro summit night. Yes, you have to remove if you want to actually do anything with your hands but if you are just walking then you are good to go. I used with an inner lining glove and hand warmers and I my hands felt pretty good during the hike. Highly recommend even though they are extremely expensive.
