Good gym/camping/backpacking towel
I had been using a ShamWow towel for pool/gym/camping/backpacking, but the texture is a bit rough. I picked up this large microfiber towel at REI on sale. Overall, it's exactly what I wanted and looks like it'll be a great portable quick-drying towel. However, be aware that the manufacturing process apparently uses a terrible dye. I had to wash the towel using no less than seven buckets of water (including two with detergent) and vigorous hand scrubbing to get the excess green dye out. The water turned dark green in all of the buckets except for the last two. I was not a happy camper after spending a half hour just getting the towel ready for it's first use.
Definitely useful, and for a lot of purposes as we
For those who are familiar with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a towel is the most useful tool you can bring with you while travelling, and REI's family of multi-towels only reinforce that notion (which, I realize is not serious). At this point, I currently have five different sizes of multitowels, having just bought a XXL and XL for use on camping trips. Depending on the size of towel, they get used as bath/pool towels, blankets, table covers, sweat towels (and the clip makes it handy for my daughter to attach to the soccer net when she plays keeper), cleaning rags, napkins, tarps, you name it. They also dry ridiculously quickly
Love This Towel
I have had this towel a year, and I love it. While "large" may not seem large, it does what it needs to do. It is not meant to wrap around you, but instead to be easy to carry, to absorb well, and to dry quickly. I did make sure that it was washed so it wouldn't bleed dye. I use it for everything. We were caught in a 24 hour rainstorm on our last back packing trip, and it dried me off before I got in the tent, it absorbed any condensation inside, and I used it to wipe things off. I can wring it out, and even when not completely dry, it is ready to sop up more moisture. I hang this on the outside of my pack when I am hiking and it dries very quickly. And it is just as soft as they say!
Soft, absorbent, relatively light
I have two dogs and I got this largely anticipating needing to dry off wet dogs in the tent when backpacking (or car camping). So far the dogs have stayed dry, so not needed. It is also thicker than the Lightload ultralight towel, which makes for a nice sleeping mat for the dogs. (I used a beach-size Lightload, which was okay until I washed it and it disintegrated. It was not thick, more like a dispoable towel.) For those who use towels mainly for humans, this towel is absorbent, soft to the touch, dries quickly, and is just a few ounces. It's basically a big chamois. Works for me backpacking. I take two, in fact. Haven't notice a problem with the color (blue) bleeding.
Works but impossible to remove "sour" smell
We bought this towel (and two smaller ones as well) for our full time RV living. It's compact and works (although takes a little getting used to the "stickiness"). That said, after a month, with regular laundering, this thing stinks like a sour washcloth or sponge and we can not get the smell out. We've tried laundering in hot water, air drying in the sunshine (which helps a little) but the bad smell returns as soon as the towel gets wet again for the first time. I typically microwave sponges to remove the bacteria which usually is the cause of sour smell. But this tag says clearly DO NOT BOIL and DO NOT BLEACH - both of which would be intervention to prevent bacterial growth. Any suggestions? We like the functionality of the towel and want to buy more, but are not sure that would be a wise move given the issue.
Purple bleeds color
The purple version of this towel bled purple for the first 10 or so washes. That purple was picked up by other clothes that I was washing. I was doing all my wash by hand and so this was really easy to see. I found the little click close strap really convenient for drying on a clothesline--I didn't need to waste a clothes pin on my towel. It dried super quickly too! Don't know if the blue version bleeds color as well.
great towel when you need to save space
I use these towels for camping and day camps for my kids. They are great because you don't have the added bulk of a regular size towel. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that you can't dry them (lost one to dryer shrinkage).
Smaller than I thought
I was hoping that this towel would be a "normal" bath towel size but for being a "large" it was a lot smaller than what I was thinking. It is long but it is very narrow. I'm only 5'4, 125lbs and I couldn't wrap this to go all the way around my waist... Returning and going to get the XL as it needs to be for both my boyfriend and I. And if I think it is small...then there is no way it is going to work for him. The quality of the towel does seem nice though. It is soft and thin, so I would definitely like to see it in action. It seems similar to most yoga towels to me. Definitely is lightweight which will be good for it intended use of backpacking. Price point is definitely good as well.
Excellent Piece of Gear
Took this towel to Costa Rica for the first time. This towel was used dry off 4 people after we jumped in a rainforest waterfall. One person was able to use towel, wring it out, and use it on another person. In regards to other reviews, I haven't seen much fading. Would highly recommend!
FANTASTIC for the gym!
I got this towel primarily for use at the gym where I have to bring my own. It is so much easier to tote this towel (in a gym bag or backpack) than it ever was to transport a full bath towel. I was concerned it wouldn't be absorbent enough, but I was completely mistaken. This towel is a freakin water SPONGE yet it line dries within just a few hours. I think this would also be an excellent towel for camping and possibly on a boat dive.
