As far as Packs go this one is Top Dog!
I absolutely love this pack. I was leary of the price, but very glad I didn't go with a cheaper one. This has all the features I was looking for and seems to be very durable. My puppy has been using it for about 3-4 months now and it still looks new. The attaching ring for the leash is a bit difficult to get to with the pack on, but this is only a minor issue. I love that the pack is removeable and the opening for the handle is large enough to pass a large reel type leash thru keeping you pet secure during beauty breaks. The harness fits nicely, a bit difficult to adjust but strong enough for me to pick Kona up and over large obstacles. Buy this one, not the others.
Doesn't get any better than this pack!
This is the best pack and if fitted correctly, will provide lasting comfort and durability for your hiking/backpacking fur friend! I got a medium and it was adjustable at all the important points. Make sure you pack it evenly and check from time to time for weigh distribution so that shifting doesn't cause rubbing or chafing, which my dog never experienced but I read some have.
Better than I expected!
I bought the l/xl for my great pyrenees who is just turning a year. It's her first pack and I wasn't sure how she would do. But she loves it! Doesn't even seem to notice she's wearing anything after a few minutes. This pack has plenty of room for all her food and water on hikes. No complaints so far. Seems durable and I'm just hoping it stands the test of time now.
I would buy this product again!
We have gone through several different dog packs. We have a GSP who runs and jumps over and through everything. He has a lot of energy and stamina. This pack is great because we have him carry a decent size load when we go on several day backpacking trips. The saddles can be adjusted for the amount in the pack without sagging. This pack held up very well during our last trip for four days in the desert. He ran through a water a lot which ended up chaffing his arm pits. We are going to try it again and see if it was bc he was wet running through streams or if it is an adjustment problem. Love this pack so far.
Nice pack
First the bad, this I assume will be the same for every saddle bag type pack, but both sides have to be the exact same weight or the pack will start to ride to one side. I took a camera out of one pouch and put it in the other side and within minutes it was riding to that side. Other then that this pack is great! It is really put together well. I like how you can use just the harness part alone. When you first use it beware of your dog, mine almost pushed myself and my buddy off a cliff because he walks really close and the pack hit us in the back of the leg.
Real gear for the back country hiker
Best pack ever. It fits snug to my dog's back with little-to-no shifting. It easily detaches from it's harness so he can take a load off during breaks. The two water bottles are excellent for going into areas without running water. There are straps built in to cinch the pack down smaller when carrying lesser loads. I have owned this pack for two years and it has held up like new. We just got back from a 48 mile trip with our dog and he never acted like he was sad to put on his pack, which is a testament to its comfort level. I do recommend purchasing the Ruffwear Hi & Dry Saddlebag Cover to go with if there is any chance of getting into wet conditions, as the pack is not waterproof/water resistant.
Quality Product from a Great Company
I mainly use this pack for hiking, camping and fishing trips. It is great having my dog carry all his own food, water and generally some of my gear too. He is my fishing tackle box when I take him with me. Great because I can just call him and my tackle box runs to me. The build quality is top notch. Thorns and general rubbing on rough surfaces have not showed any apparent wear. The fit can be a little finicky at first, but once you get it fit to your dog it is pretty smooth sailing. I have found that the straps can loosen themselves but a quick knot or safety pin can help keep them in place. I had an issue with my dog eating the harness on the first one I bought. I called up Ruffwear and received truly great customer service. I had a replacement harness sent to me for a small replacement fee; much better than having to buy the whole thing again (which I would have). Great product that comes with great customer service, can't beat it.
Good but not great
We use this as a pack and just the harness as well. When it's just the harness it can take quite a bit of fussing to get it balanced perfectly. Even when you have it figured out with the balance (harness) it wont stay that way, you'll need to tweak it every few times you use it, which can be frustrating. When using the pack, you of course need to have each side perfectly even with weight to keep it balanced. The velcro (which is essential to keep the pack stable) is junk. After a few months they didn't hold closed at all and I had to put snap buttons on the velcro tabs, which worked well. After about 8 months one of the velcro tabs tore off from the pack so I have now returned it to REI. I'm very thankful they have such a great return policy. For the amount of money this pack cost, it should be made a lot better. I would only recommend this to a friend simply because I haven't found any company that makes a better one.
Best dog pack ever
great pack used it on a trip in tahoe and performed wonderfully. no chafing or shifting Whatsoever! our dog was comfortable and didn't chew or pull on anything. He was a bit clumsy at first but got used to it and was happy. I gave this 4 stars because products can always be better
Top-quality
I bought this product a year ago for a backpacking trip to the Cascades in Oregon . After a 40 mile hike and the pack utilizing 20 pounds of dog food it fared well . We still use it today to transport groceries on our way home my dog loves it fits her well . We have a bullmastiff female 110 lbs. during our 40 mile hike we were able to hold the leash to the harness and her be able to call me up steep parts of the Mountains. I highly recommend this don't worry about the price it pays for itself
