Short Review: I purchased this tent in May of 2015 with the optional Connect Tech Garage and footprint. The tent has been used for nine nights as a car camping tent this summer. On four of the nine days our camp was rained on and we stayed dry. One of the nights was very windy (15 to 20MPH sustained wind), the tent seemed stable with the guy lines utilized. As to the size, I am 5'11" and was able to send in most of the tent. The 8' x 8' size of the tent was plenty of room for my wife and on two cots with a small table between the two of us. One night, the tent was used by myself and two other of my friends. My friends are also about my size (5'11" and 175 pounds), each person used a sleeping bag, air mattress, and a pillow. An additional person would have been a bit tight, but no more so than any two person backpacking tent with two people. Overall, this tent preformed as expected. Detailed Review: A short background on my experience. I am a former backcountry ranger in a national park and have spent nearly four full years of my life sleeping in a tent in the past 32 years of life. Currently, I own five different tents and each have their own specific use. I am so overly cautious about setup, takedown, care, and maintenance of my tents that the tent that I purchased 21 years ago still looks new. My tent and it's related accessories did not have any of the material issues that have been relayed via the reviews section with the exception of a few threads from he sewing process that had not been cut. Therefore, I assume there might be some inconsistency in the manufacture of the tent. The materials in my tent all seem to be of reasonable quality for the value of the tent. One suggestion I certainly would give to any prospective buyer of the Kingdom 4 is to get the footprint for the tent if you intend to use cots, chairs, or anything else that would put pressure on small areas of the floor of the tent. The floor is of fair quality but, I could see it being punctured easily if a cot leg were to be sitting on a rock or stick. The tent is "luxury" size when compared to my mountaineering and backpacking tents. My wife even goes so far as to call it the "princess tent" as she lives in luxury with lots of space. There is plenty of room in the tent for two cots, our assorted gear, and a small camp table. I can easily stand in the tent (as stated before 5'11") and my wife and I stung a line along the backdoor inside the tent to dry some wet clothing from our adventures. The vestibule along the backdoor of the tent was much larger than expected, certainly large enough to store packs, boots, pets, etc.. I must admit that I am impressed by the garage as it nearly doubles the size of the tent and is very useful on those rainy days. This tent is a bit small for the "two-room" concept if you wanted to use cots (see pictures). However, if a person only wanted to give them-self a bit of separation and use the front room as a dining/reading/stay out of the wet/etc room it would be appropriate. I have difficulty seeing how a family would utilize the divider wall. I rolled up the divider the first time I set up the tent and have yet to unroll it - even when it is packed. If you are a family of three this tent would be appropriate. If you are a family of four, this tent might border on being a bit tight for extended camping trips. Setup of the tent took me (on my own) roughly 30 minutes the first time I set up the tent. The first pitch was in my backyard to learn how to set up the tent (strongly recommended). Since then, I have setup the tent an additional six times (including the after trip sponge off cleaning) and I can now setup the tent (on my own) with the optional REI Connect Tech Garage and footprint in roughly 10 minutes. Much of the time savings can be attributed familiarity to the tent and to the way I pack the tent to ease setup. Perhaps one day, I will feel inclined to make a video to with my tricks to ease setup and take down of the tent. I digress, it should be noted that this tent is significantly easier to set up and take down with a second person. This tent is certainly NOT a free standing tent, it is absolutely necessary to be able to stake the tent to the ground. One of the few shortfalls of the tent I have observed is that there is no structure to keep the lower half of the tent "accordion-ing" in on its-self. Furthermore, this tent does have a very high profile; which gives the tent the potential to be unstable in heavy winds. To combat this, I suggest always using the rainfly (it makes the tent more stable) and using the guy lines on all four sides. I always tie down the guy lines on all of my tents out of habit. On my one really windy day, I am convinced the lines kept the tent intact. The garage shares the inability of the tent as it only has one pole in the front; this instability was mostly rectified through the usage of guy lines. However, it should be stated that the tent did not quite have enough stakes to do this; I went out a purchased eight (8) additional stakes. Additionally, when I attach the rainfly I do not connect the middle of the fly to the poles via the grommets as recommended. Rather, I stake those away from the tent to allow for better ventilation, stability, and to move water away from the tent if it rains (see photo). On the days it rained, the rainfly (with the garage, footprint, guy lines, and my change on the rainfly set up) did not leak from the fly/seams or have seepage along the floor or the bathtub style walls. See pictures. After my first use as a precautionary measure I applied Nikwax Tent spray to add additional water protection as well as UV protection (I do this to all of my tents - UV light absolutely demolishes nylon - both water photos are pre-nikwax). No issues were noted with leaks on the next camping trip when it rained for two nights. I am not certain how the tent would respond without a vestibule or the garage attach on the front in a storm. I suspect that a driving rain could make life miserable. Therefore, I would recommend picking up the additional vestibule, garage, or improvise your own solution to provide additional cover to the front door. Overall, the REI Kingdom 4 tent is a good tent for a small family, a car camping couple who want some space, or an individual who will be residing in it for an extended period of time. As with any product there are some issues. However, these minor issues can be rectified rather easily. It is possible from reading the review that consistency of manufacture might be a concern; with REI's return policy getting an issue rectified should not be too difficult. I would recommend this tent to my friends.
My husband and I have been camping in a small 2 person backpacking tent for several years. We chose to upgrade to this to make camping more comfortable. We are mountain bikers and I really wanted somewhere to clean up and rest after a day of riding. We love this tent! We also purchased the garage attachment, largely to keep our bikes in. We have only used it once so far but we were both impressed at the size, well thought out design components and general comfort. We purchased some Eno battery powered lights, that fit perfectly down the length of the tent and provide just enough light to move around comfortably with, not enough to read or anything like that but enough to find clothing or shoes etc. We also put cots in the tent, these are regular size and fit perfectly, with them on either side there is room to stand in the middle.
We are 2 Australians who bought this tent for a 2 month road trip from Alaska to LA. It performed great, from the cold of Alaska to thunderstorms in Utah. 8 months later we took it on a road trip through South Africa and Botswana, again it performed well. We then got the Connect tech Garage and took it back to Southern Africa traveling through Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, and with the Garage it is absolutely fantastic. Rain/Wind/Sun (with enough guys) and we were fine sitting in our Garage. We will be taking it next year on the 2000km Canning Stock Route through Western Australia
Just finished a stay on Sea of Galilee with our two daughters (first time away from home), and the Kingdom 4 was a major factor in the success of the trip. Fantastic tent for a four person family outing, very comfortable with useful features, special mention goes to the visibility offered by the netting panels. Setup was easy and quick for one person, teardown ditto. Only issue is performance in windy conditions - this tent needs its rainfly to handle even a moderate wind. With the heat around 35°C the rainfly was not an option so had to tie a guyline directly to the hub of the wind-ward pole (the short piece of the hub kept escaping its sleeve). Once tied-off the tent held well in gusts that toppled surrounding ones. All-in-all a superb family tent.
While it was a bit challenging, given the height of the tent and the need to bend the poles a good deal, I was able to set it up by myself. I'm a 56 year old woman and 5'5". It would be harder to do so in very windy conditions. It rained for five days, often heavy, and there was never any water and very little condensation in the tent. It is a roomy tent for two, and very spacious for one person and dog. The floor material is thick and seems like it would stand up to the use of cots and chairs. With the fly on, it was never stuffy. I also just bought the garage and am looking forward to trying it out, particularly given all the rain in the east. I love all the pockets and ways you can adjust the fly, if it would ever stop raining! It is a really great tent.
We bought and used this guy for the first time last weekend, everything was awesome thanks to our Kingdom 4. We camped at West Shore State Park at the Flathead Lake in Montana. Our site had a tent pad area, which was a squared off area with a good bed a wood chips on it, so I didn't feel so bad that I didn't splurge for the footprint yet. Anyhow, the Kingdom went up very easy, I set it up at home prior to use, and it went up solo in about 10 minutes. With 2 people it could be done in 5 or less. This tent style and shape reminds me of MSR's Backcountry Barn, which is what I originally wanted to have but i'm very happy with this alternative! It was waay less and IMO has come cooler tech, features, and accessories. Since there is a divider in the middle we rolled up one wall, so the interior was like a "U" shape, I had one half, my g/f had the other and our dog had the center...perfect, lol. With plenty of extra room for gear or whatever. The vestibule was cool too, at night we threw all of our fire wood under it, our camp chairs, and other misc stuff we wanted to leave outside. It did rain a bit during the night and there were no issues of any water leakage through the fly or the floor. Take down takes roughly the same time as it did to set it up, and it all goes in the backpack style bag perfectly and is all organized. Even room in there for the footprint in time...possibly the garage too if you rolled everythng up just right.
We have used this tent for 7 nights. 5 of those nights it rained. 2 of those nights it stormed hard for hours; the tent was completely dry. We've put the tent up 6 times. The design on this tent is amazing and you learn a little bit every time you set it up. A few little discoveries include a zip open rain fly for good ventilation, the potential to put 1/2 the rain fly on for quick rain response in the middle of the night, lot of pockets, a dry place for shoes under the fly and outside the tent, and room to stand up. A few recommendations: its easier and faster to set up with 2 people, the footprint is convenient, and we add a thin piece of astro-turf under the front and back doors to keep the tent clean. AWESOME TENT!!
First I would like to day I love this tent and have recommended it to many of my friends. I have made several week long camping trips in the rain and have always stayed dry. All that being said I have had poles snap on two occasions one of these was for no apparent reason. I came back to my tent and the pole that arches over the top was broken, no wind no rain. REI does not offer replacement poles and no longer offers an extended warranty on their products. I will either have to find someone to custom make a pole or just throw the tent away. This is hardly ideal for a company that is supposed to be an advocate for the environment. I am truly disappointed in REI.
just fits underneath my scooter seat. i pack all else for my road trips in my givi rear trunk and motorcycle duffel strapped to the passenger seat area. when i arrive at my campsite the tent will take about 15 minutes to set up alone. when the tent is fully up...it is my home away from home. roomy. love it. wanted a tent that i could stand up inside. i am 5'11" and it's great. purchased the garage but, have not used it as of this writing.
Unlike the other review, I have had no problems with mine. I am a spry 61 widow that likes to camp. I had no trouble setting up the tent myself & have had no problems with the poles. I find it very comfortable for myself & two dogs. I also got the tech connect garage, I have my table set up there & other assorted things to be protected. I am happy I purchased this tent & look forward to many years of enjoyment.
