This is my go-to tent for car camping and canoe camping. Easy set-up, dependable wind protection and no-leak performance make this tent one of the best I've used. Like all tents of the modern age, the Limelight 3-p is most comfortable as a 2-man tent, but no points off for that. The only gripe I have is that the short, perpendicular ridge-pole connects only to a loop. For a high end tent from such a reputable company, you would think that a grommet-type connection that would keep the pole from sliding would not be too much to ask. This single improvement would hold the cross-pole in place in windy conditions and make this tent near-perfect. Still, a five-star tent.
Got this for my son. We spent a week in Desolation Wilderness backpacking and we couldn't be happier with it. Lots of room for 2 people. 3 might have been a tight fit, but could make it work. Last day in it rained half the day with a howling wind and turned to snow in the evening. 3 inches worth. We stayed perfectly dry and warm. Vestibule is roomy and nice for cutting wind. We even cooked under it. Enclosing our dragonfly stove with rocks to keep it relatively safe we made several meals inside while waiting out storm.
Still a great tent... from Arizona to Arkansas to Louisiana... and I am planning on taking the tent with me on my Hawaii trip to Molokai in Feb 2014. Mostly, I wanted to upload a couple of shots of the tent in action. You will love this tent!
I've used the Limelight 3 for my third season and still love it as much as our first time. Although it's most comfortable (very roomy) with two people, we've had three in it twice and it's absolutely fine. Anything larger would likely be much heavier. I love that when 3 are backpacking together, the tent divides up to only 2 pounds each. It's worth the weight for ease of set-up and comfort. We've only been through a few rainstorms, so can't speak to the longjevity, but it hasn't had any issue with leaks or wear. With three heavy breathers and a still night and damp ground, there's potential for some condensation, but nothing worth complaining about.
Oh man. I love this tent so much! It's super easy to set up, even with one person. It's lightweight, yet so sturdy. My husband and I took it on a cross-country trip this spring/summer. In TX we slept out on a plain, and even with 30+mph winds this tent held up. We were using the guy lines, and it was great inside. No bending, and the rainfly didn't slap the side of the tent too much. We had no issues with condensation, and even in the middle of a thunderstorm there was no water getting into this tent! The pockets, gear loft, and vestibules provide plenty of space. We did end up trading this tent in for a Marmot Limelight 4P, because our dog takes up too much space in the tent for a 3P to be really comfortable. This is still my favorite tent, and if I could somehow shrink my dog and keep the 3P, I would! Also, it isn't super lightweight, but if you split up the tent between different packs, it's nice and sturdy for backpacking where you think weather might be bad.
My buddy and I used this tent for hunting this year at 12000 feet here in Colorado this year, 2012. We encountered rain and snow which left us tent bound for almost 40 hours. It rained for 20 hours and snowed for just about the same. We stayed completely dry and warm. The winds really picked up at night and the tent held strong without any of the guy lines. The fly is so tight to the poles it does not tough the tent. The poles never bent in like some tents I have used in the past in strong winds. We were concerned when it started snowing about it being a 3 season tent but it really kept us warm. The temps got down into the upper teens and with the wind who knows what the wind chill was. I would recommend this to anyone. I would like it more if it was a little lighter and the vestibules were a little larger, however I feel that is nit picky for such a great price and quality product. If we had three people it would have been miserable however for the two of us it provided plenty of room.
Bought this because I like to go camping with my dog, but my backpacking tent is too small to accommodate a six-foot-tall adult and a wolfhound. This tent fits us both with room -- quite a bit of room -- to spare! I'd looked carefully at floor sizes online, so I knew there would be plenty of "lie-down" space, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how tall this is when I set it up. The dog walked right in without having to "squinch" when he gets up or turns around. (The tent height is also nice for getting dressed without having to be supine.) The high/low mesh screening meant great views of the stars and a nice mix of fresh air and overnight comfort. When the wee-hours temperatures dropped enough to meet a frosty dewpoint (ahh -- crisp Octobers in Wisconsin!), the fly was effortless to set up even in the dark. No condensation problems, either. All the conveniences that other reviewers have mentioned (lots of pockets, included footprint and gearloft, double entry and vestibules) make this a terrific value, especially during a sale. It's a bit heavy for backpacking (unless you split it with someone else), but its comfort, spaciousness, and ease of use mean it will get a lot of use in our household. REI purchased and Borzoi approved!
My wife and I shopped around for a good all-purpose tent. We thought that the Limelight 2p was a little crammed, so we opted for the 3p. It is the perfect amount of space for the two of us and our backpacking gear. The tent set up very easily. My wife is short and was able to attach the poles without any trouble. It sets up and tears down/packs up quickly and easily. Both are a one person job that can be accomplished in under 5 minutes. We live in the Pacific Northwest and have had absolutely no trouble with dampness in the tent. On our last backpacking trip, we camped out by a river. That night it got down in the low 40s, but with the rainfly on we had no trouble with drafts or condensation. When we tore down, we didn't even have any moisture on the footprint. So far, we have only used this for one season and will follow up as we get more trips in. It has been great and I look forward to using it for years.
Used this in a very wet environment, stayed plenty dry and would trust this in the worst conditions. Have a dog that loved it and I trusted the tough nails of a 60 puppy not to break through the floor and even the mosquito netting that took the occasional paw for potty break. Real light at under total 6 pounds for the extra room and comfort. For a big guy over 6,3" 205lbs I didn't feel cramped in any situation and for the weight its unbeatable. The best part was the camouflage during the day (green rain fly) and the reflective corners and logos made it super easy to navigate campsite at night.
This tent was exactly the size I was hoping for. We have external frame packs and they fit great in the vestibule (a garbage bag under if it rains) but would be a bit cramped in the tent with the two of us. Stood up well to a massive storm, only water in splashed up from under the rainfly. The interior tent wall maybe should have the mesh a bit higher up, but I'm picky and this is not a deal-breaker. Like the extras and the more mute color then previous years. Boyfriend is 6'1" and the length of the tent is good for him. Built sturdy and made from quality material. Could be a pound lighter but ok for 2. Overall good purchase we hope to use for many years to come!
