Solid cooler with character, but..

Have had the green 54 Qt. for about five years now. The body of the cooler is very robust and the construction and ergonomic angle / action of the side toting handles is also very solid. Some have mentioned issues with the drain plug, and while it's not the original screw design, mine has held up just fine. There are a few shortcomings, unfortunately. One, as also previously mentioned, is the omission of the bottle openers on the original models that were stationed on the sides with the handles. Maybe they've since been deemed dangerous for children or something; who knows? The bottle openers were a great feature on the original Coleman steel belt coolers and they are sorely missed now. Two, and even more critical of a deficiency is the latching mechanism. It simply does not steadfastly fasten down the lid like the old versions did. I can fasten the lid down with the **plastic** latch, and then still manage the lid open with just an upward tug, bypassing the still closed position latch. The latch merely holds the cooler lid in the closed position but doesn't really clamp it down firmly (again, like the old ones). This has been an issue from the beginning and necessarily due to eventual wear and tear. One final gripe: When the lid is in the open position and is tilted back, the hinge connection points seemingly receive unintended stress and has caused a bit of 'sagging separation' from the external steel of the lid; to the point where the internal foam insulation material is slightly exposed. I will look to include a pic soon to better describe this issue. FWIW, the Coleman logo plastic sticker/badge on the front side peeled off after only a few uses; not a big deal though and the cooler looks a bit sharper and vintage without it I suppose. Despite the listed gripes, this very much remains my go-to cooler on a wide variety of road trips. You can load a ton of beverages into this thing and keep them nice and chilly for longer than your comparably sized cooler. (Plus it looks really cool and rustic too.) I would recommend the Coleman 54 Qt. Steel Belt cooler (I think the price has gone down since they first came out too), with the hope that issues with the slipping latch fastener and stressed-when-hanging-open hinges issues have since been improved upon by the manufacturer in more recent models.

Saved The Day!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have always been a Coleman fan since my childhood camping with my family. We always had Coleman camp gear and it never let us down. I inadvertently proved the Coleman durability again while on a recent 4 wheeling trip. I love 4 wheeling and have 2 Coleman Steel Belted Coolers on a rack on the back of my rock crawler. I was attempting a difficult line up this granite slab and the next thing I saw was blue sky. I thought for sure I was going over backwards, but I stopped just past vertical THANKS to my Coleman Cooler!! The cooler miraculously kept me from rolling over backwards. Unfortunately the cooler got bent up pretty bad, but I was very happy to not be laying on my roof. There is no question in my mind that the Coleman Coolers saved the day. Thank you for building a quality product that stands up to the abuse of the rugged outdoors and crazy adventurous people like me!!

Build Quality and It Will Sell!

I bought this cooler when they were first rereleased and was disappointed then. Was hoping that over time, todays date, they would have made needed changes. My issue is that it looks like a 70’s model, but not made to the same quality. I’ve read that materials have been updated to make the product better, not sure I agree. The locking system has changed so you don’t even need to unlock it, just pull or push hard enough on the lid. Not sure why the lock is even there. Also, what happened to the internal meat tray that use to come with every cooler. Does that item raise the price of the cooler so much no one would purchase it. I’ve been so disappointed in the one I purchased that it’s been upstairs in the barn since purchased it. I’ve been waiting for an honest vintage replica with durable steel parts instead of cheap plastic (locking mechanism, handle and latch, hinges…) before making another cooler purchase. I’ve been told the price would be to high for an item like that and no one would purchase it. Just browse online at the number of people looking for 70’s Coleman Coolers for sale. Throw the numbers out in emails and online and find out how many would be willing to pay for it. Make it so parts can be ordered and replaced. Make an actual replica using quality materials and make an American quality product again.

Misleading photos in advertisement

I purchased this cooler to replace my original steel coleman cooler which I used to put stickers on from all the places I had traveled to with it. The exterior of this cooler is stamped with a deep textured surface that is not conducive for applying stickers to. It also made the cooler look cheap and was off-putting. I was disappointed the second I opened the box. I would not recommend if your like to put stickers on your cooler.

Hello, Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent purchase of the cooler. We're sorry to hear that the textured surface of the cooler is not suitable for applying stickers, which has caused disappointment. We understand how important it is to personalize your cooler, especially when it's a part of your travel memories. Unfortunately, the deep textured surface is designed for durability and to provide a better grip, which might make it difficult for stickers to adhere properly. We appreciate your input and will certainly consider it for future product designs. If you have any more concerns or need help, please don't hesitate to contact our customer service team. Thank you for choosing Coleman, and we hope you have a great weekend. Coleman Consumer Care.

Old meets new

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This purchase was to upgrade to a new Coleman steel belted cooler. The original was purchased back in the 70's. Why do I still have the box? Usually the boxes I have are for items that no longer exist. The price has definately gone up. See photo. The new cooler is of the same quality and I hope it to last another 40 years like the first. Same features only 2 quarts smaller. Both versions made in the USA!

Cheaply made!

I was excited when we found this cooler! But that didn’t last long when the latch kept coming apart when we locked it! Or when we arrived at our vacation to find our luggage soaked where it leaks! Tip put your ice in Ziplock bags to contain water! Sad that they charged the price they do for such poor quality!

a $.10 part would make this cooler great.

Bought this cooler last summer and am now shopping for a replacement from another brand so I figured I should finally review this thing. Long story short: I paid up for this cooler because I always try to support american manufacturing. and it was Made In USA. But, the latching system on this cooler is made of cheap plastic and and the strike plate falls out and lid pops open under the slightest amount of pressure. I would give them the benefit of a doubt and assume it was poor design but I have owned the original cooler with proper locking mechanism and bottle opener and it is obvious they cheaped out on an essential part to save a couple pennies.

Nothing beats the old standard

Bought this cooler as a replacement of our old steel belted that got lost during a move and glad to say its still the best out there. On a recent camping trip we brought this along with a Rubbermaid and saw a real difference. The Coleman kept ice for about 4 days in 90 degree day / 60 degree night temps while the Rubbermaid was going through ice every day and a half. Still miss the old Coleman screw drain plug but other than that, this is the same cooler you grew up with and loved.

Cheap Plastic Latch

I was excited about this product despite negative reviews about the plastic latch. Most of those are older reviews, so I hoped the latch problem was fixed by now. I checked out the latch before bringing the cooler home, and it is made of plastic, but with a metal insert. Seemed OK. I brought it home, my wife loaded it up for a trip, closed the latch, and then she said "this doesn't work". Lo and behold, the latch doesn't hold. I'm stunned. Coleman has a golden opportunity to make this a great product at a good price. How can they miss so badly?
