A great hammock for Ultra-Light Backpacking
I bought this hammock over a year ago now and I have used it quite a few times now. I live in Montana where backpacking opportunities abound; so I wanted something light. This is a great light hammock; it keeps bugs out, and keeps you dry in a torrential downpour, as well as snow. It sets up in under 5 minutes; with added accessories, (not included), and is durable for the Ultra-Light class. The picture was me in overnight temperatures in the upper 30's. I do have to say, your backside will get cold, so I would use some insulation, like an emergency blanket in conjunction with a foam pad. If you use a Thermarest type pad, you may be fine, but it's added weight.
Backpacker's Dream
So, I used to own this tent. Weighs almost nothing, don't need a sleeping pad with it, sets up super fast, never had issues with water or bugs. It did take me more than a few minutes to figure out the best way to attach it to a tree and to get the rainfly on correctly. I would suggest a person practice this a few times before going out in the woods. I am knocking off points because I eventually started carrying extra 550 cord to make it work in more situations, like when the trees are too far apart. One of my kids loved this tent so much, she has permanently borrowed it, and I am now forced to buy a new one.
Ultra-light and Ultra-Comfortable
It took a couple of weeks to get in a backpacking Trip, although the lows dropped to 28 the night we camped, I couldn't wait any longer. This was not my first Hennessy Hammock, I moved up from the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter to the Hennessy Expedition Asym Zip to the Ultralite Backpacker Asym Zip. It is light and compact and when paired with Snake Skins is quick to hang and pack up. If you are trying to go light, this is the one of your best choices for weight savings on the big three. I am able to sleep on my side comfortably and like that I can hang off the ground between two trees, which are plentiful in North Georgia.
It's my favorite piece of gear!
I look forward to any time I can use my hammock instead of my tent because it's just so fun! I'm warmer in the hammock (long as I use my undercover) & more comfortable than I would be on a sleeping pad on the ground. Look up videos online to see how easy it is to set-up and use accessories.
Will never use a tent again!!
This is a great product. As the title says I'll never use a tent again. Even had trouble sleeping in my bed at the house after a week in my hammock. As long as I have two trees I'm good to go. This hammock is very comfortable and lightweight. I like the fact that the bug net is integral with the hammock. Unlike other hammock designs you don't have to buy things separately it has everything you need. It is very easy to setup. I do however recommend setting it up prior to going out in the field with it. The rainfly is a little small for my taste but it kept me dry in some heavy downpours. I remedied that by buying a larger rainfly. Also I'd recommend buying some longer straps. The ones included are fine for average size trees but you'll need bigger ones if you run across larger trees.
Unbeatable Comfort and Durability and lightweight!
I have owned this hammock for two years now, and I also own the Explorer Asym. I used this hammock on an 11 degree night in the North Cascades of Washington State on the Suiattle River with no warmth issues or cold spots at all. I had the rainfly up, an inflatable sleeping pad inside the hammock underneath me and my USMC issue 3 Season sleeping bag as a quilt over me, also wore a black wool hat. I was snug as a bug all night. It really surprised me! As long as you plan to stay below the tree line, I would recommend everyone try a Hennessy hammock at least once. Besides sleeping curved hammock style you can lay at an angle inside and sleep completely flat. The Zip version of these are my favorite since I hate trying to locate the velcro exit in the middle of the night on the Explorer that I own.
hennessy hammock
I purchased the ultralite backpacker, only wish the rainfly was slightly larger so you didnt have to keep it so snug to the hammock in order to stay dry in a down pour; otherwise, it's very comfortable, lightweight, easy to setup and take down -- especially on uneven ground. If you are much taller than 5'10" i would suggest the larger version. With the provided straps, there is practically no impact to the environment around you either.
Great Hammock
Great hammock. Plenty of room and the ridgeline is great for storing small items where you can reach them. Included rain fly covers, but minimally. Have to really think about how and where you set it up. The included webbing straps will barely fit around a 12" tree. I added the ENO Atlas straps and two Camp Nano 23 carabiners. Much easier to setup and level with this setup.
Best Sleep Ever
As someone who has had lumbar spinal surgery, I am always having trouble sleeping, even at home in my $2000 bed! I used this hammock recently on a 5 night backpacking trip and will probably never use anything else again, unless I am somewhere with no trees to hang it. I've even thought about hanging it in the backyard to get some good sleep over the weekend! The overnight temps were fairly mild at 55-60, and I slept like a baby with just a light down quilt. It takes under 5 minutes to setup, and even less time to take down. The only issue I had was the stuff sack ripped one one of the seams when I was stuffing it back in the first time. No big deal, I'm planning on getting a small dry bag for it anyway. Overall, the best product I have purchased so far.
For camping without flat spaces
I have had this out three times. Sheds rain, keeps the bugs out and is comfy with my REI Magma 10 and an inflatable pad, but I have only had it down to 45. Great for areas without flat spots. Virtually no impact. A touch heavier than my single Big Agnes tent, so my decision about shelter will have to do with likely access to trees and camp sites. In general, it opens up a whole lot more country to “being comfortable.”
