Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Day Hiking Shoe!!! I am an experienced hiker and backpacker, but new to the Oboz brand. Simply put, the Firebrand is an amazing day hiking shoe...a big advancement over other/older brands, especially because of the great heel and arch support (no need for super-feet). Was wearing Garmonts most recently, which now feel like Buicks in comparison. Saw that some hikers gave these shoes lower marks on fit and stability...they definitely need you to dial your lacing fairly precisely to adjust the shoe to your foot. Guessing this might have been an issue. Not sure why more hiking shoe manufacturers don't include lacing and break-in instructions...would save a lot of headaches for everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoe Bought these shoes to replace a pair of cross trainers that fell to bits very quickly. Needed shoes for a 45KM. coastal walk. Mainly beaches and rocky headlands with occasional wetlands. On receipt of shoes wore them around house and into town for a couple of days. Very impressed with instant wearability. These shoes performed very well on coastal walk and I was impressed with their waterproof qualities when crossing swampy wetlands. Traction on a wide variety of surfaces was excellent. Seriously considering buying a second pair. Very interested to see how they wear over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most comfortable shoe I have ever owned! Just got back from almost three weeks in France and England and wore these shoes everyday. From the first day the shoes felt like someone had made them from a mold of my foot. Not one hot spot, blister or any negative feeling from the shoes. Walked over 20,000 steps one day and they felt great the whole time. Poured rain one day and feet stayed dry and comfortable. I am going to REI today to try the Oboz hiking boots on, I hope they fit like the shoes. The shoe dried out over night everyday also. I have never owned a pair of shoes or boots that have fit this well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You Get What You Pay For I have worn these shoes on 3 different 14ers so far this year and a lot of shorter hikes to break them in. With time they become more comfortable but I did have to buy them in a size smaller than my other shoes and the top of my foot felt strangled at first. Perhaps I am just not used to hiking boots as much (usually hike in lightweight trail running shoes). That is the only complaint I have. They are rugged, durable, and provably waterproof. I am not worried about beating these shoes up like I would be with some of their cheaper cousins. Worth the price premium that they command.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice hot shoe. I buy a lot of boots for work and for play. Compared to the other 5 low rise boots I own, these are more stiff, sturdy, and supportive. The fit is similar to Merrell, slightly narrow in the toebox, but more supportive. I like the fit and comfort of Keen, but they don't last very long for me, these will last. These are good quality boots, but compared to all my other waterproof boots, these are the hottest. They are even hotter than my high top waterproof Lowa and Asolo boots. If you don't have sweaty feet, great, but if you do, stay away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all round hiking shoe After several feet explosions on long hot hikes it was determined I needed a hiking shoe or boot with a larger toe box and stiff sole. I was told me these shoes would do the trick. Most of the hiking I do is off trail, bouldering, through creek beds and rock formations which tears up equipment. So I put them to the test. After break in I put on a 50lb pack and headed deep into the Los Padres National Forest, trekking down white ledge canyon toward the Sisquoc River. No issues at all they did great. Over the course of the next time months I did several extended trips without any issues. These shoes did great with out any feet issues. After returning from an expedition deep into the lower Sespe wilderness region on a seriously hot day I notice several chucks were missing from the soles. I took the shoes back to REI and was able to get a full warranty and picked up a band new pair. These shoe have done great, well enough to justify another pair.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Shoe. I have problem feet--chronic injury and a strange shape that's hard to fit. I have to walk a great deal and find this an exceptionally comfortable shoe. And it's hard wearing, kind of cool looking and it keeps out the water. I am taking off one persnickety star because I have never encountered such a shoe for spontaneously coming untied. Even with a double knot, the things untie themselves while you're just sitting there. Buy this shoe with the knowledge that you will have to buy different shoelaces to avoid going mad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Shoe for Me Without a doubt the most comfortable and supportive shoe I have ever worn (and I'm in my 60's). Perfect for trail hiking. Used them on many trails in the National Parks this summer at Zion, Bryce and both rims of the Grand Canyon (light packs; not shure how they would do for heavy backpacking). Also used them, for urban hiking and museum death marches in Paris this fall during many rainy days. Happy feet all the time! Do run a bit warm due to the waterproof feature, so I would alternate socks during the day. If they made a non-waterproof version, I would buy them in a heartbeat, just to have the versatility of choosing the right pair for the day's conditions. I used to be a big time runner, so I'm pretty demanding of shoes, but these answer the call.

Most of the reviews commented on having high arches and being very comfortable in these shoes. Well, I have just the opposite--flat, flat feet which require that I wear rigid orthodics. Will these shoes accomodate flat feet and rigid orthodics??

Asked by: buddgood
Yes, the arch support is built into the insoles. Removing the insoles yields a flat foot bed that orthotics can be added to.

I need a wide toe box, yet I still need support so that my feet won't slide forward. Will these accommodate that?

Asked by: AZhkr
The Firebrand is only available in a regular (D) width; they are not specifically roomier than any other brand. If you need a wide shoe, we recommend narrowing our selection using the footwear width navigation options on the left side of the search page:

REI Service keeps repeating that this shoe does not come in a wide and yet in the selection of shoe sizes a WIDE is Available, like 9.5 Wide. Either your training is wrong or your selection is Wrong, Which is it???

Asked by: TKorney777
At the time we answered the questions about wide widths, we only carried medium widths. We have recently (early 2017) started carry wide sizes.

Oboz shoes and boots are good for the heart and sole

Bozeman-based Oboz plants a tree for every pair it sells, runs its Montana office on windpower, and donates shoes to those in need. Oh, and they biomechanically engineer their footwear to be incredibly comfortable, too.
