New to Backpacking

I was looking for a backpack that above all else was comfortable and fit well. This pack is heavier then all the others I tried but when loaded down with some weight it was hands down the most comfortable and BEST fit. I can't wait to take it out on the trails. I had 4 employees helping me and definetly got me into the right pack, plus gave me some great tips on the bag. Please do not let the weight of the bag discourage you, I will take a pound or two of extra weight over blistering discomfort ANY day. I purchased the xs...as I am 5'4" and 100 pounds...I often lose roughly 5 pounds in the summer, so the well padded hip belt and shoulders are a welcome feature.

Room for everything!

I am so happy with this pack! I went back and forth between this and the Osprey Ariel 65 before deciding on the Deva 60. I love all of the compartments this bag has and it is very roomy! Pros: -Superior lumbar support which is great at helping to distribute the weight of the pack. -Lots of exterior compartments v. the Osprey which only has one main exterior compartment. This bag has many storage pockets which is great for organizing supplies and makes them easily accessible rather than digging through your entire pack. -Easily accessible sleeping bag compartment with a thin divider from the rest of the pack. -Thick and comfortable padding on wasit belt so straps don't dig in. -Detachable pack at top of bag. I read some people use this as a day hip pack, but I used mine to pack my clothes into and detached it at night to use as my pillow. It is also small enough to stuff into my sleeping bag to keep my clothes warm at night (putting on cold clothes in the morning is no bueno! Brrr!) -Hooks at the top of the bladder compartment are great for keeping the bladder in place so it doesn't slide down in the pack. -Two access points for main compartment-top of bag and front zipper allow easy access to main compartment. Cons: -Pockets on the waist belt are too small for phones/cameras, so I used mine for my knife/chapstick/hand sanitizer. -If you are going for ultralight camping, this bag is not for you as it weighs in around 5lbs, but is great for distributing the weight for longer/heavier trips. I can't say that I noticed the additional weight between this pack and the Osprey Ariel 65. I think the extra weight may come from the lumbar support system but that is something I would not give up in this pack! Overall, this is an AMAZING pack and I highly recommend it to all women backpackers! Happy Trails!

Very comfortable, has everything

I'm very small and had a hard time finding a pack that didn't bruise me up really badly on long trips. I had the old Deva 60 for about 10 years, and it was REALLY beat up but still worked. I was nervous to replace it since it took me so long to find a pack to fit perfectly and the Deva had obviously been redesigned. I finally got the new one, and it is AMAZING. It's heavy if you're into ultralight backpacking, but if you have bony hips like me, this thing is exactly what you need. The compartments are well designed for access and usability, and the padding and frame distribute weight perfectly. I highly recommend.

nice bag I am jelouse

I bought this for my wife. We had her measure and tried on different bags. I should first say that my wife is Chinese and has a small frame. Thus only two bags actually fit her properly. This bag has a strong plastic form which pushes into your back. This form makes sure the weight is properly placed on your spine. Moreover it helps keep your posture correct during your hiking. The bag does not have have a rain fly like my bag. However on our last trip it rain a lot, and my bag with it's fly was soaked, yet my wifes bag was dry! It was as though the material in this bag repelled water while my bag soaked it up. The bag was costly, however I felt like my wife bought a working piece of art. truly an awesome bag.

Where has this pack been all my life?

I made a mistake my friends. I bought an ill fitting pack because I didn't know better, I loaded that thing up with way to much weight and I killed my back on a 110 mile section of the AT. Then I came home and decided to get fit properly for a pack and the Gregory Deva is what I ended up with. And I love that thing. I haven't had it out on an actual trip yet but I've loaded it up with everything including food and water for a day hike to test the weight and it honestly felt like there wasn't even anything there. It's also got the approval of my chiropractor and let me tell you, that's not easy. I really didn't think a pack could be this comfortable. I think I'm in love.

Can't go wrong with this one

Just returned from a 5 day trip into the Grand Canyon. This pack was very comfortable and never gave my back or shoulders any problems. I started with 33 lbs including a full 3 liter hydration bladder. There was just enough room for every thing. The sleeping bag compartment is a little small so I use a compression strap for my bag. I love the detachable lid for a day hike pack and used it a couple times during the trip. The only con is the mesh hip pockets are not big enough for an IPhone or a small camera. The pack is heavy and not for an ultra liter, but I think you have to give up something for comfort.

Very Comfortable!!

I chose this pack because it is well made, has lots of compartments, and is very comfortable. I have done several training hikes loaded with 30-50 lbs, and found it to still be comfortable. The extra pockets/compartments were clearly designed by someone who said, "Hey, wouldn't it be great to have a camelback hose option on both sides? How about easy to reach water bottle pockets? LIttle pockets on the hip straps? Make the main section big enough for a large bear can. A lunch compartment on the back? A decent sized top pocket for rain gear and first aid? Let's make the zippers bigger and sturdy." My maiden overnight voyage proved the backpack to be excellent--only complaint would be that it was large enough for me to bring along a bunch of heavy stuff I don't need!

Happy First-Timer

Went on my first overnight backpacking trip this weekend, using my new bag I bought a few months ago. I went in to the store to get fitted and am glad I did, and was nicely informed before I bought it that it would be going on sale that weekend - score! We went on an overnight, 7-mile round trip with lots of ups and downs, and I stayed very comfortable throughout. My bag weighed in at about 29lbs. There are plenty of straps to tie everything down to a nice, compact bundle. Overall, it stayed pretty nicely on my hips where I wanted it, but if I didn't adjust it correctly there were a couple of times that I could tell it wanted to ride up a bit higher than where I wanted it; but I think this is more a function of my love handles getting in the way! Considering that I am a bigger gal with hips for days, I think it did very well! Also, the higher ride attributed to my least favorite part of the bag, which was that it did come up pretty far behind my head, so I wasn't really able to lean my head back very much. Not that I really needed to, but it was something I noticed. I wouldn't say that was a deal breaker for me, however. My back stayed cool, and I never noticed any discomfort/rubbing/excessive sweating. The bladder sleeve was great and there was a convenient setup for my drinking tube to be anchored right to my chest strap. The detachable day pack was okay - I tried it fanny pack style and messenger bag style and was just fine both ways, even scrambling over rocks. The front pocket was large enough to hold a Nalgene bottle, lightweight fleece half-zip, camera case and sunglasses case, so plenty of space. Not sure how much I'll be using it as a day pack in the future, however. I wish there were more exterior pockets, and my next bag will probably be a little bigger. But this is a great bag, and I easily fit my sleeping bag and pad, roll-up camp chair, our two-man tent, and food/snacks inside, along with the bladder. I strapped my camp shoes and trekking poles to the exterior.

A love story.

I went to REI with a completely different pack in mind. Tried this one on just for sizing purposes and I fell in love. Told the store employee it felt like a giant hug! The padding is amazing and the weight distribution is unbeatable. Just got back from my first weekend backpacking trip with it and it surpassed all my expectations. I was carrying at least 40-50 lbs in it and it felt like almost nothing. I am 5'4" and 115 lbs and was able to carry about as much weight as my 6'6" camping buddy. The swivel hips feature was great for climbing over fallen logs, rocky ground, etc. without losing balance. Plenty of pockets, loops, etc so all my gear had a place and stayed organized. The removable top compartment was nice for bringing toiletries into the tent. I can't wait for more adventures with this awesome pack!

Love it!!

I absolutely love this pack. It's a bit on the heavy side, but the comfort and adjustability makes up for it and I wouldn't trade it for another pack. I've used this pac in both the Sierras and in Norway, across very rugged terrain both in high and low elevation, through both snow and summer weather and with heavy and light loads. The pack is phenomenal. The packs has so many adjustment options that it's great for any load and amount of clothes that you might wear. As long as I've adjusted and loaded it correctly I haven't gotten any hot spots. If you are - ask someone for advice. This size of 60L is also very versatile, can be used for weekend trips as well as extended trips if you pack well.
