Rated 4 out of 5 by from Convenient Travel Duffel I purchased this duffle to go inside my backpack on the way to Europe so that I could fill it with my purchases for the way back. This bag was a good balance of price, quality, and size. There are lower and higher quality bags, and there are lower and higher priced bags all out on the market, but this bag was really the best balance. Many of the bags that fold up to be TINY and extremely lightweight seemed like they would tear very very easily. Since we had the extra space and didn't mind the extra weight, we opted for this heavier, but less rip-able bag. We ended up packing all of our "soft" clothing in here, and using our regualr, more rugged backpacks for all the odd shaped boxes and fragile gifts that we'd purchased. I really appreciated the option to carry the bag as a duffle or as a backpack. This is a great middle of the line travel duffel that is easy to stow away!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Bag I packed this along on my trip to Asia. I had a full small suitcase on the way there and packed this along for the inevitable souvenirs. This bag survived 2 short hops between Asian countries and the flight back to the US on EVA Air. I wasn't able to complete fill it with the amount of clothing I had. It survived with only a stress mark from the corner of one of the boxes I packed inside. The rest looks as good as new. One annoying thing is that it's loose if it's not full. I had a few larger boxes that wouldn't fit into the suitcase but was loose and floppy in the duffel. I used the few clothes I had to pad the corners of the bag but it would have worked a lot better if everything I put in was soft (i.e. not so many shoe boxes)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great organizer! I bought this because it stowed to a compact size when not needed, but expanded out to a full sized gym style bag. I used it to segregate breakable items from more robust items when flying. I could carry the breakables as carry on, and check the remainder. When I landed, the bags were again consolidated, the REI stuff travel duffel tucked back into it's own pocket, and I was off! Being made of rip stop nylon, it probably isn't the best for everyday use, but perfect for what I needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great duffel! Very compact inside its case, I carried it inside the Eagle Creek Large Duffel on my way to Honduras. On the return trip, I was able to switch to this smaller duffel with the large duffel packed inside. It made it through baggage on international flights without a scratch! Switching to the smaller bag made my return trip much easier. Would also work well the other way around if you plan on returning with more than you take. (Plus, it also matched my Eagle Creek luggage.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Shoulder Strap would be nice Good quality and compact for bringing along as extra baggage. It really needs to come with a shoulder strap. I thought it was inside the bag...however it says "not included"

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Extra Bag for Travel I took this along for a trip overseas as an extra bag for the return. Worked out perfect, and survived the baggage handling. Folds up very small and weighs a minimum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great carry-on Flying to backpacking trips I needed a larger carry-on for items that would not fit in my checked duffel with my pack. This fit my needs perfectly. It's light and easy to carry by the handle or over my shoulders. It stuffs under the airline seat so I wasn't fighting for overhead space. When wearing it as a pack, everything slides to the bottom but for short distances through airports that is a minor issue. I have only used it on one trip but I expect it to last for many years and many trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes carrying items easier and folds to nothing I use this to carry all the odd items I need while in the canoe. It is great. It can be a backpack or hand carried. It can start out full and folds to nothing empty. And be nothing extra to carry empty and opens to hold a lot.

Questions & Answers

When fully expanded will this meet the standard for carry on baggage?

Asked by: never2old
Fully stuffed, this duffel exceeds the domestic air travel carry-on size. Most airlines require a piece of carry-on luggage to be no bigger than 45 linear inches (L + W + H) to meet carry-on size restrictions. This can vary so please check with your airline ahead of time.

What is the durability like? I had a similar packable duffel from Eddie Bauer that was made of "rippac" and it got friction holes almost immediately. Will the REI duffel hold up well to rugged use and airport handling?

Asked by: MNSnowLeopard
We have received feedback that this duffel is durable and holds up well to rugged use and airport travel.

Your specs state a 3100 cu in capacity, but computing the dimensions only yields a 2775 capacity. Which is correct?
