Went looking for a "camera bag" to carry some of my equipment when hiking through some of the state parks here in MN and walked out with the Talon 22, had to spend my dividend some how :D. Probably a little bigger then I need for my camera equip. but works great for dayhikes, school and work, the pack of choice from the fleet of packs I have. Looking forward to taking to Alaska and Denali NP. The only complaint and it is very nit-picky is that I wish the main compartment opening was a little larger, but once again, being very nit-picky. I LOVE THIS PACK!
Used this pack to climb Longs Peak and it fit everything perfectly. So many organizational features and the zipper pulls are nicely designed and strong, too. The load never felt too uncomfortable and everything cinched down to reduce bulkiness. The back padding really lets it breathe well, more than I originally expected. It's been very durable and haven't had any problems with seams or tears. Another nice feature is how many straps are held close together as they tighten down so you don't have loose straps flapping everywhere. I use this for mainly long day hikes, but it would work well as a carry on and casual uses. Very well-designed pack.
I have been using this pack for two years and absolutely love it! It has gone snowmobiling in Yellowstone (strapped around the passenger seat), down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon (stuffed in a dry sack unless needed for day hiking), and has been used for countless days of summer fieldwork. I find that it fits a clipboard, first aid kit, flagging tape, measuring tape, lunch bag, camera, rain gear, Trimble (or smaller GPS unit), and other paperwork nicely. However, it can't carry much more than that. If you have need to carry pin flags in your work, the side pocket and trekking poll strap is perfect! I find that this pack works well in the summer, but is just a bit too small in the winter, due to having to take off and carry various layers as the day warms up. I use its larger cousin, the Talon 33, for winter fieldwork.
I bought the Talon 22 after lots of online and in-store research, comparing this pack to competing Gregory, REI, Black Diamond and The North Face products. The Talon 22 had the best combination of features, capacity, light weight and comfort. Although the shoulder straps and waist belt are thin, their clever design makes them comfortable for light to moderate loads. The various outside pockets are stretchy and secure. The Talon 22 seems to have more interior space than specified. The size M/L fits my long torso well. The only thing missing is an ice axe loop. Overall, a well-thought-out, versatile daypack.
As a very small framed petite woman, it wasn't easy to find the right pack. I've looked FOREVER. I speed walk to work and back everyday and carry my lunch, change of clothes, sometimes shoes and I needed capacity and support. This is the best pack EVER. I have a Gregory pack which is ok, but the Osprey is actually much roomier, even though its cubic space is smaller. Every time I have on the Gregory pack, someone tells me, "that pack is bigger than you"! The Osprey fits like it was made for me, it is comfortable even when it's fairly heavy, and gives great support. If you are a petite and need a supportive pack, this is the one for you!
Love the versatility of this pack. I use it for day hikes, minimalist multi-day hikes, running, biking, traveling, going to work, etc. It's small enough to cinch to your back when you need it but don't want to feel it, and big enough to pack it to the brim. I disagree with others who said that laptops don't fit, as I frequently carry mine in it (along with a ton of other stuff. It slides down behind the mesh bag that hangs down into the main compartment, which allows it to fit, and also keeps it from sliding around. I'm 5-10 and the M/L fits no problem (and is easy to adjust). Can't complain about much at all - I love this thing!
At 6'5" 195 lbs I have a tough time finding packs I like. I'm all torso with narrow shoulders which makes it worse. This pack with the adjustable harness fits nicely. Well, as good as any I've tried. I use this bag everyday as I commute by bike. Daily I transport a 15" macbook pro, headphones, hard drive, laptop cord, 20 oz coffee thermos, hat, gloves, lights for my bike in front pockets, and bike tools. I sometimes keep an extra shirt/thin coat crammed in there too. I still have a bit of room if I make a stop at the store (not much room, but a little). I want to emphasize this bag seems bigger than 22L. If you are like me and have never used a pack under 30L go for it and get the Talon 22. You won't regret it. It has all of the room you need and without the bulk. This means it fits tight on your back and isn't any longer than necessary meaning your load won't sag too bad or pull down on your shoulders. The suspension is great for a minimalist design. I find it very comfortable. When I first got the pack I thought where the back padding hit my shoulder blades was going to create hotspots, but while I feel this when I first put the pack on it never bothers me. The only negatives are I wish the sternum strap would get tighter, and I wish the pack was about 1/2" wider. My macbook pro fits perfectly, but makes the side bottle holders super tight when placing my coffee thermos in them. While I don't believe there is such a thing as the perfect pack, the Talon 22 is close. My wife has the Momentum and it is great if you want more of a city style pack with more options.
This pack has been through a lot in the year I have had it, and it looks like it. But despite getting tossed around, grazing rock walls and scraping through brush, there's not a tear on it. The compartments are really well thought out and I like the Velcro-sealed wallet and ID holder. The looping/suspension system for the hydration bag: I think I figured out how it works. There are probably a few variations. Nothing specific I could find about how to do it in the literature that came with the pack. I do wish the bottom loop was big enough to accomodate an ice axe, but there are workarounds to that, such as adding a length of webbing etc. I look forward to many more years with this fine pack.
I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect day pack and I was not disappointed. This pack have every feature you would want. The pack is very comfortable even with heavy loads. The only advice I would give is the S/M size seems too small for any adult to use. I am not a big person and I had to get the M/L. Also I wish the pack came with the magnetic clips to hold the osprey bite valve in place but its not that big of a deal. I loved this pack so much I bought this pack for my girlfriend and my friend bought one too.
I am 6'2" 208lbs and the M/L pack fits great. It is highly adjustable and easy to find the right size. I took this for a 15 mile round trip hike along the Ice Age Trail and though my shoulders did get a little sore, I took the weight off and let it rest on my hips for a few minutes to let my shoulders recover. Osprey hit the nail on the head with this pack. Every pocket has a purpose. I like that their are two hip pockets. I had a builder bar, clif bar, and powerbar in one hip pocket and a pair of binoculars in the other. The main compartment held my rain jacket, rain pants, jetboil, dehydrated meal, tea cup, camera, and an extra midweight layer with room to spare. The top pocket held my towel, first aid kit, and multi tool. The outside stuff compartment is really cool for layers you take on and off alot during your trip without having to go through your whole pack. I kept my Marmot Driclime Windshirt in there along with my bandana. I had my 3L camelbak in the reservoir compartment and had no problems with it sliding around. A very snug fit. This pack was a great investment and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
