I bought another backpack online from REI, basically relying on the brand name, but it just didn't fit right. I returned it and the staff at REI helped me find the perfect backpack (Osprey Talon 11 Pack by Osprey). I highly recommend going into the store and trying out the backpacks! They even put beanbags (for weight) in the backpacks I was considering to give me an idea of how they would feel, which was incredibly helpful, especially since I was about to put the Osprey back and purchase a different backpack. I'm very happy with my purchase and will continue to shop REI!
I have both the Talon 11 and 22, and use the 11 as my everyday bag. I have neck and low back issues but unlike purses and shoulder bags this pack doesn't cause me any sort of pain. After a year of daily use, including occasional short hikes, it's starting to get a little dingy around the edges but otherwise looks like it's going to last forever. There's just enough room in the smaller pockets for phone, wallet, etc, and I can easily get a couple of bulkier items in the main compartment (I can even fit a thin yoga mat in if it's folded rather than rolled). There isn't a lot of extra space with a hydration bladder, but it's great for a half-day hike on a warm day when you don't need to carry a lot of extra clothes.
I got this bag to have a smaller hydration-friendly day pack for ~10 mile hikes. This bag has so many great features, my favorite being the pockets on front straps for easy access to snack bars and smartphone. I actually didn't use the waist strap - it was stable without it. It has a lot of pockets for such a small bag. Venilation was great. I carried an pack of snacks, a first aid kit, mylar blanket, keys, and a few other small necessities. My 2L Osprey resorvior fit perfectly. The only trouble I had was finding a good place for the magnet strap clip for the resorvior mouthpiece. It all worked out though. Overall a fantastic bag, sturdy, strong, good looking, and comfortable, with perfect amount of space for a 10-20 mile hike.
I use this pack for every hike I go on as well as other day excursions. Great construction and well thought out. Aside from that Osprey has hands-down the best customer service. I recently sent in a backpack to be repaired (part of their lifetime warranty) and it was so damaged they replaced it for free without question. Fantastic company with fantastic products.
I was searching for small, comfortable, well-designed day pack with lots of useful features. This pack, in my opinion, is ideal. I use this pack daily. On long walks and day hikes, it's perfect for carrying a few extra might-need items like a sweater, a pair of gloves, a rain jacket, a water bottle and lunch or snacks. I also use it around town and for trips to the library or grocery store. The pack is very comfortable and has features you'd expect to find only in a larger pack. The hip belt and sternum strap make the pack feel as though it's a part of my body when I'm walking or jogging. The slim cut to the pack bag keeps it out of the way of elbow and arm motion. The two zippered packets, one internal and one external are great for securing my wallet, keys, glasses case and other small items. The two small pockets on the shoulder straps fit my old fashioned flip phone nicely and hold it securely. I highly recommend this pack.
I purchsed this pask as a small day pack for spring/summer and earely fall hikes in the Northwest. I do a lot of long one day hikes 12 plus miles. The pack is great big enough for the essentials, small enough to keep it light. The only Con is the two zippers on the waist pockets are hard to zip back up, and I wish there was a way to remove the helemt clip, other than that excellecnt pack.
I have had this pack for over 6 months, and it has held up great! I primarily have used it for day hikes and as a backpack for school, but have also used it cycling as well. For hiking, this pack is AMAZING. it is extremely comfortable and functional. For day hikes, I don't need much more than water, some food for longer hikes, and maybe a sweater/ rain jacket depending on weather, and this pack has plenty of room for this plus a few other odds and ends. This pack is great for organization as well. it has a small zippered compartment inside the main interior, as well as an exterior zippered compartment on the front of the pack. there is also webbing on the front to hold something like a folded up rain jacket. Anything around the size of a nalgene or smaller will fit here. I've loaded this pack with around 12 lbs. for a 10+ mile hike, and couldn't have ben happier with how it performed. the airscape design helped keep my back drier, and the comfortable straps felt great the whole hike. This pack is extremely stable while using it for cycling. the sternum strap and hipbelt kept it nice and snug while riding.
This was perfect was hiking mountains. It carried everything I needed for a day-long hike to room to spare plus it had plentiful easy access pockets for smaller items on the shoulder straps and hip belt. Functionality and design was great and the pack is very well constructed. I'm pretty petite and the pack fit perfectly. The only thing I noticed was that my smart phone (i.e. camera) didn't fit so easily into the hip pockets or shoulder pockets.
This is a great lightweight day pack or pack to attach to your backpack. It's durable, holds a lot for it's size, and has great features, great pockets, trekking pole strap. Osprey makes wonderful packs, and this is no exception!
