Amazing Output
As an avid motorcycle camper I need to keep things small and light (just like any packpacker). That being said there are certain luxuries I need to have. Being able to see is one such luxury for me. This replaced a much larger lantern I bough at a regular sports store. I was worried about the output on this but after trying it out I was impressed. The output is amazing. In fact I never run it at full power. It fills up my tent perfectly at 50%. I even used it in a KOA camping cabin and did not need 100%. I am not sure why some figure it has a short life? I have taken this guy on 6 trips and still have the same set of batteries in it.
Light Up Your Life
I bought this lantern to use in my tent at the Renaissance Faire. Wow! This puts out an impressive, super bright light! I also like the dimmer feature (and so do my friends...it's THAT bright). I bought it's bigger brother, the Black Diamond Titan Lantern, as well and I must say...the Apollo puts out more light and is just plain brighter. The hangers on top are versital and very cool. Lots of hanging options with a little string, branch, or even your zipper :) The legs are great as it puts the light right where you need it on a table when working or cooking! I highly reccomend getting one of these! I'm going to get one or two more for sure!
Sleek and bright
I first ordered this lantern in the mini version and loved it so much I followed up with the full-size one. I love the design, the frosted lens diffuses and spreads the light, and it's bright enough to light the table while cooking after-dark or writing in your journal. Easy to hang (with a carabiner) or use the legs whose design can hold the lantern level even on an unlevel surface. Folds up compactly and isn't heavy -- though if backpacking I just use the mini version. I've tried other compact lanterns; this is by far the best. Only drawback is it seems to burn through batteries (4 AA) after 5 hours or so ... I didn't time it; next time I will.
Great multi-use lantern
We use three BD lanterns - Apollo, Voyager, and Titan - for camping and backpacking. Their missions: Apollo - around the campfire, cooking table, tent, or walks in the dark. The legs make this a good elevated light and bright for just about any use. Voyager - Tent exterior lighting or interior when needed. Titan - Base camp light. Keep string it up a tree to keep the site lit and it certainly provides ample brightness over the cooking needs. Excellent battery life. Look forward to having these for years.
Wished I found this 4 outages earlier
What a spectacular Item, my first introduction to an LED Lantern and Black Diamond. I endured 4 or more power outages, cannot keep track anymore. Instead burning candles, I am now going the way what a savy camper might enjoy. The item in real, is so much smaller...especially the Apollo, not much smaller than an LED light bulb. Bright, super design, so easy to use and set up, there is simply nothing else now but a Lantern from Black Diamond. Will get these items as xmas gifts!!!! And i bought the recharger kit, trying to be environment friendly...and as an option on hand. Absolutely a must have item, I am thinking suggesting folks to put this in the suite case while traveling. One never knows if a power outage hit you while you traveling.
Not much to dislike
Perfect for a minimalist hiker on a long term trek, this lantern provides plenty of light for meal prep outside the tent and more than enough light inside a two-man tent for reading. Runs on AAs so pack accordingly depending on the length of your trip, but overall decent battery life.
Excellent product
We bought two of these lanterns prior to moving to the Caribbean knowing that we would be experiencing frequent power outages. Given that we came down here for studying, we needed powerful and reliable light sources. These definitely fit the bill. They last for hours at full brightness (we use very modern Ni-MH rechargeable batteries), and are bright enough to study in the pitch black without straining our eyes. Unfortunately, one of them began malfunctioning after over a year of faithful service (we need them for a few hours at least once every week). I did not hesitate to replace it with the same model.
Little lantern that packs a big punch.
This little lantern can easily light up even large tents. Even when hanging it on the opposite side of my tent I was able to read without any problem when heavy rains had me stuck in the tent all night on a recent trip. I would say for those on the minimalist side of the spectrum it may be a little bulky/heavy, but if you're expecting some rain or severe weather that will keep you tent-bound it can be a very, very useful thing to have. Plus, because of the legs it's easy to transfer to a table or other flat surface when outside of the tent. I have not personally run into the issues with a short run time that some are reporting, but I haven't run it for more than 4 or 5 hours so far.
Awesome lantern!
This little lantern is awesome for a tent lantern or for smaller area lighting! It is a too low powered for lighting up a whole campground, but that is not what I bought it for nor what it is built for. I simply use it around the house, at night on the patio, hang it in the tent when camping or for emergencies. For those uses it is awesome and has a good run time. I really like this lantern as well as it fold up very compact and has easy one touch light adjustment and tells you when the battery is low. I am looking at buying another one as well to have. Highly recommended for the uses above.
Bright and packable
At about 1/2 LB this product isn't the best for high adventure, but if you're looking for a good all around camping/hiking and general use lantern this one is it. Bright, adjustable dimming, small enough to use in a tent this lantern works great! The double "D" style top hanger is ingenious and very useful, and the fold up legs keep it stable and elevated enough to really light up a space.
