I bought these boots a month ago because next November, we are going to the the full Torres del Paine circuit in Patagonia. I wanted something with more support than my current, low end boots. Ahead of my first trip with them, I just wore them to work (desk job) for 3 days. Needless to say, I was a little concerned about blisters, etc. on my trip. I set out to do 38 miles of the AT in northern NJ over 3 days in February on snow covered trails in temperatures from 8-30 F. My pack was ~39lbs with water. On the very first day, due to a road closed because of Hurricane Sandy, the distance went from 10.5 miles to 16 miles. The boots performed perfectly. In fact, for all 3 days, not only did I not get a blister, there wasn't even a single hot spot! The support was perfect, the traction phenomenal, and the comfort amazing! Even putting them on, frozen solid in the morning, wasn't that bad. Granted, I have only used low-end boots before, but these performed beyond my expectations. At the sale price, they are a steal.
I backpack mostly in Arizona which has a little of everything in hiking, but most hikes have some heat of the day (I have put about 40 miles on these boots already). I didn't want a boot that was too warm, but wanted some of the comfort of lining. The Steep are warm, but my feet do really well in them. These are the first pair of boots that I have not gotten a blister in on long hikes. They do "feel" a bit big or clumsy. I also wish they had a rubber toe guard. The Nuebuck seems to wear easily. My hikes tend to be of jagged rocky conditions (Grand Canyon). I also enjoy telling everyone about my fashionable Italian leather boots.
This is the best boot I've ever work. I have trouble finding a boot that fits my weird shaped feet. I bought this boot because I need a higher top boot with good ankle support. It fit and was comfortable right out of the box. Although I put only about 20 miles on it before we started a trek from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, the boots fit perfectly and never gave me a problem. No blisters or even hot spots. That's a first for me. it has great traction, a lot of support but enough ankle flex to make it easy to hike in. I ordered 3 sizes [...] they are a bit heavy but I never noticed it on the trail.
My feet are a little wide across ball of feet but narrow as they go back to the heel. These lace up well so I can get them snug where I want them. No heel slip as I had from other boots. Superb ankle support for my skinny easy to twist ankles. I look at the trail much less now as a bad step will not twist and ruin my day! Three hikes so far, comfortable out of the box not even a warm spot. Two nice hikes over some packed snow going up my first 14ers of the season. Good grip on all surfaces wet or dry. Lots of water from snow runoff stayed dry inside. Good quality construction. I wear a 10.5 running shoe and a 10.5 boot fit with medium thick hiking socks.
Most comfortable boot I have owned. I saw the ratings in Backpacker Magazine, and it is even better than they said. Very heavy duty boot with amazing comfort. I went backpacking and climbing with no break in. They are a work of art. I used to buy Pivetta's, a super comfortable Italian boot. The Steep is sturdier, waterproof, and to my surprise even more comfortable. It is perfect for 50 pound loads or day hiking. They seem to be expensive until you wear them. I have an ankle injury, and other foot issues. When wearing these boots I do not feel a thing. They are the best of the best. Buy them and you will never want another boot.
Simply the best boot I have ever worn in 35 years of hiking/backpacking. I wear boots every day, and this is by far the most comfortable, best out-of-the-box boot I have ever worn. From day hiking to hauling heavy loads, this is the boot I turn to. Absolutely suited to alpine scrambling, but also the boot you want to keep on at the end of the day. I don't know what to say about previous reviews of poor wet traction - have noticed none of those issues on moss covered roots and rocks, slick stream beds or leaf-strewn wet trails. Absolutely recommend. And REI service rocks, even for deployed service members overseas.
After buying two pairs 11.5 and an 11. I settled for the 11's. Two months of break in, I head to Glacier for three days of America's best. After day on the Gunsight pass trail, I loose the toenail on my second to big left toe and unspeakable pain in my right ankle. I relaced them every way to Sunday and still had pain. I duct taped my toe for the rest of my trip. What the heck? Good thing I brought a back up pair of LW hikers. I want to own these boots! I will be returning them for the 11.5s. Everyone is right- out of the box they fit and feel great. Thank goodness for REI's return policy. This story is developing...
After a long battle of trying on, buying and taking back many different boots I finally settled on these guys. I was hesitant due to the price and the color. The price of these boots is well worth the money. They hug my ankle, don't slip, have a roomy toe box and are crazy waterproof. I have already put some decent miles on these bad boys and have not had one blister. I am a new Zamberlan customer and with these fantastic boots will never look back! Spend the extra cash and get something that is comfortable all day and will last years. But if I were you, I would probably wait untill the next 20% off cupon comes out!
I've almost given up in my perpetual quest to find an all-day hiking shoe that will not bite me by the end of the day. I've tried a number of brands over the years and none of them allowed me to forget about my toes. Except these Zamberlans. I almost could not believe the comfort and ease. I've used them in the desert, Wasatch mountains in the drizzle/snow/rocks. I don;t even notice toes and feet after long hikes. Can't say much about technical use for climbing, heavy pack loads etc. For regular hikes, however, they can't be beat. As mentioned below, I too had to go with 1/2 size larger than usual.
I ordered a pair of these boots 5 days prior to my trip to Arizona and Utah. I was a bit skeptical of their claimed "no break in time required", but i was wrong. I took these out of the box and hiked for hours and hours. They really felt "cadillac-comfy", kept my feet dry, and protected them from the harsh environment i was in. I've tried the Asolos before and they were a little bit stiff on my feet.
