Ignore Happyscientist, these are great!
I just bought a pair and the July 4th weekend paddled Spicer Meadow Res., Lake Alpine, Lake Utica, and Lake Union circumnavigating some of them more than once. these gloves are not tight or restricting, held up with my massive abuse and protected my hands. With the wrist bands they don't shift with your paddle motions. Don't know why Happyscientist had problems. I use these with a Werner Ikelos paddle 215cm paddling a Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145. The gloves are not too thick to make paddling uncomfortable. I put 'em on and just paddle until sunset. As long as you're back to the parking lot by dark-thirty, it's all good!
Quality deteriorating
I thought I found a perfect glove several years ago, except REI didn't have it in XS, until a brief period this year when I ordered 2. I paddle a lot and use 2 of these a year, sometimes more. However, within the last year the quality has deteriorated -- the seam on the thumb gives way after a few paddles, and on the fingers the edges roll back. Even though I hold the shaft lightly, the inner thumb gets to pre-blister stage after a 10 mile paddle. Two days of similar length paddling, I will get a blister. My hands haven't gotten any bigger, my stroke style hasn't changed. Small is too large. This year I'm on my 3rd pair. Unless the quality improves or the price goes down, it doesn't seem a good buy any more (the price has not increased). And I will need to find another glove for multi-day paddles.
LOVE these gloves!!!
I use a Lightning paddle with YakGrips on them, and am tired of the grips sliding all over the place. Bought these gloves this week and after three days on the water I wish I'd had them ages ago. Not waterproof, but I didn't expect fingerless gloves to be waterproof. The spandex or whatever material is on the back stretches just enough to be rock solid on my hands but not too tight. I actually think they might help my arthritis a bit. The leather padding is PERFECT. Awesome, can't recommend them enough. Great for fishing too.
don't protect from sunburn
I bought these gloves without reservations knowing that Kokatat name is synonymous with top-notch unsurpassed quality. Was I in for a surprise! After the first day of paddling in these gloves, although they were comfortable, I found sunburn on the back of my hands. That never happened to me in my old NRS gloves, which provided 50+ UV protection. The Kokatat gloves don’t provide UV protection like some cheaper brands do. While the specs don’t claim that, and it is my fault that I overlooked the lack of UV protection, I must ask, why? Isn’t it common sense that paddling clothing should protect from sunburn? In my southern climate, significant part of the reason I wear paddling gloves is to protect hands from the sun. “Mesh back improves ventilation to keep hands cool.” IMO, keeping hands cool is the least of the problems in paddlesports: just dip your hands in the water, and evaporative cooling will be stronger than any ventilation can provide. The gloves are probably wet anyway after some time paddling.
I'll never use anything else
I wore these for 3 weeks of strait paddling. They were incredibly comfortable and I had no problems with my hands. The gloves held up well to a lot of abuse. As long as you get the right size your hands will thank you.
Comfortable kayaking gloves
Plain and simple, these are great. Awesome fingerless design, comfy materials, etc make it so that I sometimes forget I'm even wearing them. I lost one of them from my first pair and had to kayak one day without them. I missed them dearly. As a result, I went back to REI and bought two more pairs (one extra for guests). Can't wait to get out onto the water this season, and these will be a key part of making sure I continue to have a blast! Keep paddling!
Great Gloves
These gloves come in handy when I've been out on the water for hours and my fingers are water-logged. The quality of Kokatat is unmatched by anyone else in the industry. Great investment.
Great for Dragon Boat paddling
These gloves have helped my hands stay blister free!
Perfect for 5 day kayak trip
I brought these on a 5 day kayaking trip (approx 10mi a day) and they were perfect! - sun protection yes, I have a tan line where they land on my wrist I went with 3 family members - all brought different gloves - and these were everyone’s favorite (compared to some others they went higher up on the fingers which was nice blister protection)
Good Gloves!
After trying several pairs of paddling gloves, these are the best. They have lasted well and no plans to try others!
