I bought this headlamp for my son to use on Boy Scout campouts. As a rule of thumb, I seek out the least expensive products to send out with him, especially flashlights, etc. as they are commonly lost. I installed the batteries without any problem. Apparently, on the second night, the headlamp stopped working. He said that he was using it and the light went out. He and I both assumed that the battery died. I replaced them and found that the unit had, in fact, stopped working. I have owned other black diamond products and they have served me well, however, I would not recommend this unit based on my experience.
REI and BD have both denied posting my original review. So I'll shorten it a bit. Not kid friendly. Not easy for kid to dim Not easy for adult to dim if not dim not gonna last 120 hours needs a screw driver to switch batteries could leave screw out so switching batteries on a trip is possible but IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAD THE SCREW IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! needs a strap over the top of the head. NOT for the issue of weight, but rather because kid headlamps often turn into a necklace needs many improvements that I think BD had dialed in with previous models. don't buy this because of the screw and dimming issue
I was looking for a cheap, compact headlamp to carry in a pocket for work. It's a basic headlamp for a fair price. I actually didn't notice the little "safety screw" thing until I got it home. Like most people I know, I usually don't carry a mini-phillips screwdriver with me. I am probably going to leave it "unlocked" by not tightening the screw. It will stay together regardless. Special note; the included screwdriver will probably have the tip end in the handle (so pull out and reverse ends). Will keep since returns for me are a hassle. But next time would probably go for the next model up?
After reading the comments below, I decided to buy the product for my 2-year-old daughter. She loves it, and the strengths given by the other reviewers hold true. The negative given by the others was the small screw that needs to be undone to change the batteries. Great news: this is NOT a problem. When you put the batteries in for the first time (using the small screw driver provided), just DON'T re-tighten the screw! The battery compartment snaps shut anyway!
Got this for my daughter for Christmas; nice bright lamp however changing the batteries is a problem. You need a tiny phillips screw driver. Going to be problematic if the batteries die while away from home. Still not bad for kids.
Bought 2 of these for my girls 5 and 7 for Christmas this year. I agree that having to unscrew the battery cover is a bit much. A pinch cover would have been a nicer feature. But the girls love them and the pink band. Happy to have their own headlamps!
I bought this to give as a gift to my niece at summer camp and fortunately took it out of the package beforehand to put in the batteries. Get this: installing/replacing battery requires a special screwdriver, which comes with the package but - as one can imagine - would get lost fast. Can you imagine wrestling with that on a camping trip? this is going back.
What started as a gift for our 2 yr. old has become a family favorite. It stays put, is very comfortable, and puts out nice light for such a little lamp. The older members of our family have more powerful lamps, but we end up using this one all the time because it's so small and slips easily into a pocket. It's also perfect for reading because it's very light and comfortable for extended use. We live and camp in the heart of bear country and it's important to have decent light for middle of the night trips to the restroom and this little lamp does great. It does require a mini screwdriver (which anyone who has kids or wears glasses already has) but it's not a downside at all compared to how handy it is!! We actually just ordered a couple of extra so that our 2 yr old can have his back. Great find! Thank you Grandma and Papa!
I bought two of these, one for my 5 yr old nephew and another one for my 2 1/2 yr old niece. They love them! I am looking into introducing them both into camping this summer, and these headlamps have gotten them really interested in going... Only downside to these is the tiny little screwdriver that you need to open the battery compartment. As long as you put it in a safe place where you'll remember where it is, it will be fine.
My boys love this headlamp. We have been the proud owners for a few years now...very sturdy. Wonderful bright light, and adjustable for their heads. They love wearing them in bed at night to read. It's also nice that the battery is not one of the button-cell types (expensive to replace), just 2 AAA batteries. And for all those reviews complaining about the small screw...how great that Black Diamond includes a small screw driver!!!! LOVE LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!
