my go-to tent stake
I carry a wide variety of stakes (2 of each kind) on the PCT because I end up camping on many different types of soil. Most are expensive titanium in shapes varying from nails to Y- beams to skinny and fat Vs. Usually at least one variety will hold the critical lines strongly enough. This stake ends up being my go-to stake in most types of soil. It holds remarkably well and seems to last as long as the metal ones. The high visibility color can't flake off, it is just as light as the Ti stakes, and it's cheap!
Good for some things
I purchased these to supplement the six stakes that came with my tent. I use these as high visibility stakes for extended rainfly stakes, so those ropes are easier to see (we've all tripped over them...). These are NOT great for firm ground, and you may need a rock to pound them into anything other than loose soil.
Emergency Use Only
These should not be your primary tent pegs. I bought these on my way to a recent backpacking trip because I could not for the life of me find my bag of MSR Groundhogs, and didn't want to spend like $20 on another set, only to, no doubt, find the bag when I got home. It was $6 for enough stakes to pitch my tent and rainfly. That's the appeal. I've since thrown out 4 of the ones I bought because they bent on their way into the ground. I didn't expect much more from a 50 cent tent peg. If you can manage to get them in there, however, they'll hold decently. Overall, these are the stakes you buy on the way to wherever you're going because you forgot your good ones at home. Much like most of what Coghlan's sells.
Won't Bend
I use these with a plastic mallet, and so far they have served me well. I have managed to bend the tri-flange aluminum stakes, but not these. They are light weight, won't corrode, and easy to see. They are my go-to stake for setting up my tent.
Got My Moneys Worth
I wanted affordable tent pegs and I saw these in the store. They started to wear after a few uses. I don't plan on buying more but I recommend if you are just getting into camping.
Decent Peg
Cheap and easy to use. Not a big deal if you break one or lose em. The quality is decent however I definitely bent a few on slightly tough ground.
3 of 4 broke in hard ground
I was motorcycle camping on very hard ground. I needed a hammer to drive them and still had much trouble getting them to drive in. One of four broke. Fortunately I found an old tire to use as a "stake." I don't have much experience and don't know if others would have performed better.
Not indestructible
I was playing around with various tarp set ups today in the backyard and broke two of these. The ground was soft and I was pushing them in by hand but they still snapped. The bright yellow makes them stand out but two broken stakes on a trip could be bad news.
Plastic bends
I bought these to stake down tent blind in rocky soil and they bent easily.
Tent stakes
Good selection, good price-have yet to use them however
