Great bag for airline travel

I purchased this bag to keep my REI Mars backpack in one piece as checked-in luggage for several flights. The best feature is that the full bag stores inside itself as a smaller bag. Pull the duffel out of itself, and voila - stuff your backpack inside and you are done. The only weak point is that the duffel straps are weak, and it would not take much use before they pop at the seams. The best thing to do is to pull your backpack out of the duffel when you arrive, and then store the duffel inside itself. When compressed, the duffel bag is pretty small and would probably fit somewhere inside your backpack.

Manufacturing Flaw? No Lockable zippers?

We LOVE this bag, but for some reason or another, the version of this duffle does NOT have lockable zippers. It has ONE half of the Lockable zipper. I called the local REI and all of them at the store only have one half of the zipper. There is a plastic loop, but even if you lock the one zipper to it, you can easily pull the zipper around and open it. Boo. Please fix!!!!! Would be 5+ stars if this was addressed.

Solid Protection

Offers solid protection against the elements (or conveyor belts, etc.) and security due to the lockable zippers. However, due to the difficulty in which is stows I find my self rolling it up and putting it on the top of my pack...especially when trying to make connections. Once taken out of the original packing, it is hard to repack. Also, contains no clip or belt trap as to secure it to the outside of your pack. With all of that being said... I lost mine somewhere in Poland, and once I got back bought another one. It is great to have the piece of mind that comes with added protection and security that comes with this bag.

Similar to the Osprey Airporter

The specs online are at or under 62" (W+H+L), but the tag on them exceeds this by about 3". 62" is the cutoff for luggage. This being soft sided, my pack could actually make it bulge , so I am hoping this works without oversize charges. Measuring the the seems I get closer to the online specs. This packs small which is why I decided on it. It isn't much different than a duffel except the opening at the top. My other choice was a duffel, which looked more heavy duty, and the shoulder strap was re-moveable, a slight plus when checking bag. This strap can be shorten quite a bit so that helps.

Easy Travelling and Backpack Protection

I bought a brand new Gregory backpack (70L) and wanted to protect it from the evils of baggage claim. I was pleasantly surprised with this inexpensive duffel. Not only could I put in my backpack (which was packed), I could fit in my poles and a ton of extra clothes. This duffel is easy to carry and is worth every penny. I used it for my trip from Atlanta to Seattle and the duffel held up to being handled roughly by the airlines - when I arrived there was not a scratch. The bag also easily packed back in to it's pocket so it was easy to store during my trip.

Great Product

Used this duffel as a cover for my backpack on a flight to Europe. Worked perfectly in that capacity. Compresses into a tiny space when not in use. On the return trip, used it as a duffel bag for clothes that needed to be washed as well as a cover for my then-empty backpack. It held all my clothes, my wife's clothes, some of another traveler's clothes, as well as toiletries and a few gift items. When I retrieved it at the baggage carousel, it looked just like it looked when I loaded it for the first time. A great product for the price!

Couldn't have made the trip without thes

My family of five was headed to the Sierra for backpacking, and I couldn't quite figure out how we should manage airline travel with backpacks and other gear and clothes for the car portion of our sightseeing. I took a chance and bought five of these duffels. We could not have been happier with the outcome. Each duffel has enough room for an 80L pack along with extra shoes and clothes. The packed bags were easy to stack on airport carts and maneuver through the airport. Bag dimensions are small enough to count as a standard (not oversized) bag for check in. The bags also worked well when car camping and long car trips, as we could keep each family member's gear nicely separated. The bags seemed more than tough enough for our purposes.

Enormous!

ENORMOUS. We haven't used this at the airport yet, but getting ready and packed this bag up with a Deuter Ventura 50 +10 (somewhat filled), a full day pack, Empty packs to include a Deuter Fox 40, an Osprey Ace 48 and REI Meteor, and there is still enough room I could fit another day pack in the end or a sleeping bag. I wasn't expecting this to be so large. But glad it is, because we can take all the hiking packs on the plane instead of mailing them! Let's hope it holds up at the airport. My one complaint is that it only has one zipper pull, so I'm not sure how locking it will go. But there appears to be a plastic loop ideally placed to meet with the zipper pull to attach the lock to.

More Than One Use.

This bag has proven to be very useful on my backpacking trips around the world. Works perfectly for it's primary function as protection from airline, bus, and train luggage compartments and conveyor belts. Because I travel long term with medium sized backpack, I've found it useful as a duffle bag to fill with gear I won't need when going on a day hike or short camping trip while on the road. I can unload stuff I won't use from my main pack into it, then lock it up with a luggage lock and keep it under a hostel bed (if there are no lockers). Works great as a laundry bag too. I'm a big fan of products with multiple uses. :-)

Works well

I bought two of these to carry mine and my wife's packs to Nepal last year. These were our checked baggage. They did a really good job protecting our packs, but did take some abuse from the baggage staff for the trip around the world. I think one of the bags I bought might make one more trip to Nepal, then be too worn out. I'd rather this wear out instead of my pack, though! The zippers work great, the straps hold up (but aren't very comfortable), the stitching looks good, and the material is much heavier duty than the Osprey duffels that I looked at.
