Great product
I recently bought this box for my 2013 Impreza Sport 5-Door. I have been a truck guy my whole life but wanted better MPG. My biggest concern was places for my gear. The SkyBox 16s certainly solved that. I was going to get a Thule but these were on sale. I am glad now because the Thule either makes one shorter than this or a fair amount longer; I didn't want either. This box is the length of my roof and does not look awkward. The advantage now is I can fit snowboards long enough for powder and decent length skis. The primary use is for transporting camping and climbing gear. The box is easy to install though some might need a hand due to size and weight. It is stable, opens/closes easily, and doesn't seem to make a lot of noise. I think if it is windy all cars are noisy. Performance wise I definitely lose a lot of MPG second to the extra weight on my car and loss of aerodynamics. From LA to Bishop my MPG went down to 27 MPG from 32/33 (it is mostly up hill all the way) and I was closer to 30 back. Still a lot better than the 15 MPG in my 2005 GMC but not what I was hoping. It is understandable though, so I am not totally displeased. Just an idea of what you can fit in there: Two 55 liter packs stuffed with a couple trad racks, triple set of draws, three harnesses, three ropes, two helmets, two TV dinner tables, three sleeping bags, two compact chairs, two sleeping pads (large ones), 4 season Nemo tent, one gallon can of white fuel, some guide books, dog bed/dog food for a week, and a couple other random things.

Ambivalent -- be careful
I installed this on my 2009 Jetta Wagon, loaded it and drove 1200 miles without incident. Several months later, I again loaded it with a variety of items, and drove 1300 miles, again without incident. On both trips I encountered high winds and rain, and the contents of the box stayed dry. Most recently, however, I was just beginning the second day of a 1300-mile trip. I heard a bang that I first thought was a rock hitting my car, but then realized that the box's contents were flying all over the interstate; the box had popped open on the driver's side. Fortunately the items that flew out were all soft and did not cause any accidents or damage to cars behind me on the interstate. When I stopped, the box looked like the latch had opened, but the handle was still locked. I couldn't move the handle until I unlocked it. I rearranged the contents, moved a box into the car, then closed and relocked the box. A couple of miles down the road I stopped and checked everything again, very thoroughly. I made it the next 700 miles without problems, despite fairly strong winds in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. I'm not sure what caused the lid to open; it was pretty windy, and I was passing an 18-wheeler at the time, so I suppose it's possible that air currents somehow popped the lid open. It may also be possible that the red strings, which allow you to pull the lid closed, somehow got caught in the latch the previous day so that the lid was never properly secured. Or, it may have been hit by some debris that somehow caused the lid to open. I will continue to use the box, rhough I will be extra-vigilant in making sure it's properly latched, and will use the included cargo net to minimize the chance of things flying out should the lid/lock fail again. Except for this (major) problem, I've been very pleased with the box. As others have noted, it adds little or nothing in the way of road noise and does not seem to affect gas mileage in any significant way. It has always kept my items dry, even in major downpours. Had I written the review last week, I would have given it five stars. Had yesterday been my first experience with it, it would have earned one.

The Best Value in Storage

This 16 c/f Yakima roof box was on my car within 30 minutes of buying it. It was tight and right with the four clamps to the bars with a helping hand of a store employee. It is an easy install, ask someone to assist the initial placement to the racks and the rest of the installation is a one-person task. We comfortably fit four adults and one child in a Sequoia and drove. Big Sur, Sausalito, Yosemite, Mammoth and Mojave, all in 5 days and we had no reason to worry about the box at all, we just had a wonderful, worry-free California road-trip. The Sequoia mileage was not adversely affected by the SkyBox, it registered equivalent to our normal milage. Yakima has a good aerodynamic design. The SkyBox holds the bulky items up to 45 lbs, and for us that included a rice cooker, 3 sleeping bags, two tents, 2 single-burner stoves, cookware, one suitcase, clothing, various blankets, jackets, 4 trekking poles, etc. If we had hit the road with all the gear packed in the SUV it would not have been as fun or relaxing at all, especially with an active 7 year old in the vehicle. If you drive with your family, or a crew, and you need to clear the gear to go on top, the Yakima SkyBox is for you. I will be mounting the SkyBox on my Prius for the work tools, parts and gear that are crowding my hatchback area. The Yakima SkyBox is a versatile storage unit that mounts on just about anything. For value buy the SkyBox unit only, the cargo net and the glossy paint on the more expensive model is unnecessary. Be sure to keep the spare SkyBox key in the glove box, and never attempt to open the unit on both sides at the same time, one side only at a time.

Extra Space Needed!

I bought a 2 door 2012 Golf and soon after, found out that we were expecting our first child. With not enough room, this was the best option for us. We use this for camping and general use. There is enough space to put luggage, our REI Hobitat 6 tent + accessories, folding chairs and a bunch of other stuff. It is easy to access and use; as well as being a perfect fit for the car. No issues with opening the hatch and with more than enough room to spare. This is my third roof box and I am finally happy with the selection I have made!

Awesome Box!!!

Great, great box. Just took a 1300 mile trip in december back east and it held up great. It holds a ton of stuff and I didn't notice a difference in gas mileage. The fit on my 2005 nissan xterra is perfect.[...]

Excellent Product

I have put about 1,000 miles on this product and could not be happier. It holds a lot of gear and is stable and quiet even at 80 mph. It is also a perfect fit for my 2010 4Runner. The trunk does not touch the box. I was undecided about the Whispbars or the standard round bars. In the end I went with the Whispbars because although the Skybox will not always be on my SUV, I have no intention of removing the bars. They are quiet and look like they came from the factory. Installation of the Whispbars was difficult due to the worst installation instructions I have ever seen, but the box itself could not be any easier to install on the bars. The entire set up is very nice. The box seems to be fairly well constructed considering it does not weigh much (I can load and unload it myself). The locking mechanism doesn't seem particularly sturdy and it would not surprise me if it gives out at some point if considerable pressure is put on it trying to force an overstuffed box closed. Loaded or unloaded the box is sturdy at high speeds and I do not notice any noise whatsoever when the sun roof is closed. I am pleased with this purchase and recommend this product to others. It is so nice to be able to free up some room inside the 4Runner.

Plenty of Storage.

We traveled to Iowa on a 800 mile round trip. I had 4 suitcases & 2 small duffle bags fit perfect in there. It rained hard the whole way home with not an ounce of water inside when i arrived. I would recommend this product.

Another great Yakima product

We have been wanting one of these for a while. Bought it for a snowboard trip with our kids,to put on our Subaru Tribeca. Fit great with no issues with rear hatch. We put a ton of stuff in it. Both sides opening makes for easy loading and unloading. The durability was tested when we got home and was accidentally put in the garage. Doesn't fit there but the box only got some scratches on it and no other problems. Can't say the same for the garage door. Great over all product. Can't wait to put on my truck racks for snowboarding. Sorry more to add, it did cut down on our mileage but were able to take everything we wanted.

Easy switch

I love this box! Holds all the extra gear and is huge but looks good on both my vehicles. The mounting system is great. I set it for my 2012 Outback and then adjusted the factory cross bars on my 04 Explorer. It take less then 10 minutes to switch from one to the other. All its really missing is a mount inside for snow boards but nothing a couple bungees can't fix.

One big black box

Just the right size for an E90 3-series BMW. Not too long, not too wide, not too tall. Looks great and holds gobs of stuff. Adds station wagon cargo to my sedan. MPG dropped by about 2 as expected. Stupid easy to install. If you have to have the smooth finish (as opposed to textured) a net and cargo pad then feel free to pay the extra $130, but really they aren't needed. You can find that stuff elsewhere for cheap anyways. The handle is a little goofy to get closed correctly and the sole reason for a 4-star rating. I might just need to practice more.

Very Pleased

We needed a cargo box that would fit the 2013 Infiniti JX35. We found this box at REI and had help placing it on the car by one of the store staff. We were so impressed with the quality of the product and the features it offered. This box fits perfect on the Infiniti's factory cross bars. It clamps down very easy and is secure. It took less than 15 minutes to install it. The box doesn't hang over the front window and it clears the rear antenna. What was a nice touch, is that the rear of the box's profile matches the "D" post, which looks pretty nice. We selected the black textured box which looks sharp. I'll be putting Griot's bug guard on the nose so that it will be easier to clean. We drove home with the box on the car, traveling at highway speeds and we could barely hear any wind noise. Since the JX is an incredibly quiet car, we were pleased with the performance. Now we can travel with 4 small dogs in their crates, and carry my golf clubs in the Yakima, plus put all the extra luggage and all of Fido's goods in the box and still have plenty of room in the car for other items. I wish we had this box last year when we took a 2,000 mile road trip with friends. The car was packed so tight that we didn't have any extra room. This box would have made the trip more comfortable for our back seat passengers, and...the carved redwood bear that my wife purchased on the California coast. It sat on my wife's lap instead of a cargo box. REI staff and their website had better information about this box than the Yakima website. Also, the reviews on this product from REI member's made a difference. Their comments were helpful.
