Sturdy and trusty

Bought these to replace an old pair of Komperdell poles only to find that they're made by the same company. They work great for their intended purpose. I also used these to hold up my tarp (Kelty Noah's Tarp) and they held tension well without collapsing. My only problem I experienced was with the wrist strap mmechanism. Somehow, the plastic wedge that holds tension on the strap came too far out and got wedged in at a funny angle. It took some time and serious elbow grease to free it up and get it working right again. I think this was user error more than anything else.

Great, inexpensive hikers

If you're looking for the latest in what technology can offer in a trekking pole, look elsewhere. If you want an inexpensive set that does what it's supposed to do, these are for you. I most recently used these in the Missouri River Breaks where they assisted me in backpacking out a cow elk to my canoe, then paddling back to my car at the boat launch. They are lightweight, pack small, and the grips are comfortable. The grips are soft and foam-like, which absorb sweat and don't blister fingers. They aren't as easy to adjust as the FlickLock mechanism, but work non-the-less. I bought these on sale and they are worth the money.

Serious Value, Excellent Performer

Prior to purchasing these poles I read several reviews. Many say the poles are weak or compress under weight. There are complaints about the grips and all kinds of stuff. I bought these when the were on sale during Labor day as I didn't want to spend a lot on poles. I have finally lost enough weight to really get out there and hike and backpack. I bought poles to help reduce the strain on my knees while hiking downhill. These poles work excellent for that. I am 5'10" tall and weigh 330lbs. I have put 25 miles on these poles. I haven't had them collapse once. I have used them for stability. Today I hiked a slot canyon and put significant weight on them several times. Once I jammed them into a stream bead and used them to pole vault over the stream. I am completely confident in these poles and their ability to hold my weight. The tip is strong and has held up to rocks with ease. Years ago I owned a pair of Leike suspension poles. I'd never spend the premium for those poles again. The adjustment is easy, the poles tighten easily and function as designed. I have had some grip strap loosening but this isn't a design flaw in the poles. I can't stress enough how big of a difference trekking poles make in your ability to hike and how much relief they give on your knees on downhills. Great product.

Excellent Value

These poles helped me through some very tough hiking in Yosemite. They were light and comfortable although a little bit of black came off of the new grips. Easily removed with water. The only thing that could be improved is the free portion of the wrist strap seemed to naturally fall into an uncomfortable spot which was also easily remedied by moving it away from my hand. I would definately recommend these poles.

Buy them. You won't be sorry.

LOVE these poles! I've been using them for snowshoeing and hiking. I'm 230Lbs. and I've never experienced the collapsing that the other reviewer mentioned. The grips and straps are very comfortable and easy to adjust. Did I mention that I love these poles?

half satisfied

On the first backpacking trip using the REI traverse trekking poles one of them kept collapsing. I figured it could not be my weight causing the problem, I only weigh 170, so I tightened the locking mechanism but the locking mechanism broke. I don't have hands of steel so I figured it must be a defective product. I exchanged them for the exact same poles. On the second trip one of the poles began collapsing again. This time I used duct tape to fix the problem. Needless to say I was not very happy the second time round. I returned them not wanting to strike out a third time.

Quality Trekking Poles

I lost one of my previous trekking poles. So on the way to hike the Grand Canyon, Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (Distance: 44.5 miles, Elevation Gain: 10,000 ft, Time: 14:53) I bought this pair of REI trekking poles. They were great! Vibration was minimal, weight was good and I didn't develop any blisters on my hands despite using them for 14+ hours straight and I wasn't wearing gloves. My only complaint was that the lowest locking mechanism really needed to be cranked down to stay tight. I also like that the baskets were optional since I find them along the trail all the time.

Good Value

Have used these poles on several trips and now feel comfortable discussing them. Have used these on variety of terrain (rock fields, mud, sand) and they have held up very well. They have been especially helpful when crossing streams and rivers. They have held up to placing the bulk of my forward weight (250 lbs) on them during crossings and descends. I have not had any problems with the locking issues that other have an encounter. I have also used these poles as tarp stakes and as supports in a "make-do" field chair with no problems.

Inexpensive but not perfect

The poles are sturdy, handle nicely, have decent grip and are easy to pack. I am not a light-weight guy (~250 lbs with the pack). Repeatedly, I noticed that lower section of the poles slowly collapsed over the course of a half day. Once, I lost balance and had to lean heavily on one pole, whereupon the lower section completely collapsed. In an effort to tighten them more, I felt that the internal threads skipped. All that is not a disaster but does not inspire confidence. I think I will replace them with a BD for the next trip.
