Buy all three!
I started with the smallest; the Black Diamond Orbit Lantern. 5 star as well. I picked this one up to be my big light. They are small, compact really well. based on both the Orbit and the Appollo-I'm strongly considering the Titan. Dimming is so easy, you just press and hold, let go when the light bottoms out on lums (it will give a quick flash). I've combine this with an s clip and some REI straps (see photo) and I can easily set up a lamp on the nearest tree, just bring it inside and hang it on a gear loop when turning in.
Small, bright, battery is great
I went out Christmas shopping and picked up this lantern because I had a 2006 Coleman lantern at summer camp and it had to light a 10x10 canvas tent. I used it about 2 hours a night on low and it ran out after 3 nights. This made me angry, and I searched up a new lantern with more battery life. This one beats it by a lot, and is actually brighter. It's not quite as bright as a newer 2008 lantern, possibly because of the new u-tube lights in Colemans, but basically, if you're looking for a lantern that is going to last long, I would recommend this one for tents up to about 6 man. My 4 man does great with it, but the diffuser is very good, and I think it would work in a bigger tent well.
GREAT LIGHT NOT LISTED RIGHT
Great light I love it. Bought two one white and the other grey. Beware product description is not the same for these products. The white light has 50 lumens output and a 3-watt led. The Grey light has 56 lumens and a 2x led light. Also it says 10-Meter light radius one one light and the other says 10-Meter light diameter (probably the same thing). Why is this not listed when you change colors on the light. I love REI but please let me know this before I choose another light solely on the color. Once again great light but beware that you will get a different light if you choose between colors.
Lots of light but...
I've used it when working on my car, as a desk lamp, or out barbecuing! Great lamp with a TON of coverage. I love the adjustable light settings. Don't bother buying the recharge kit - it lasts forever on batteries. However, I do wish this was lighter. If it were it would be in my backpack for sure.. but sadly, for backpacking trips I'll be leaving this at home
not impressed
I bought this lantern with high hopes of bright light output similar to a propane lantern but was disappointed. On backpacking trips, we like to sit in the tent at night and play games (yahtzee is lightweight and always fun!)I was also unhappy with the fold-down legs and was hoping it would be sturdier. I returned it and will continue to bear the weight of my small propane lantern as it puts out amazingly bright light. It is also fair to note that I am super picky about my lighting, so consider that when reading my review. I am definately not easy to please in this department! :-)
Outstanding Lantern!
I use this lantern so much, I bought a second one for our multi-day camping trips. The light output is simply amazing! With only two, I am able to light up our entire outdoor kitchen set up! When finished, they collapse down to a very small, packable size. Plus, there is no flame or heat generated, so they are safe to use indoors as well. My only complaint is that with regular alkaline batteries, the run time is much shorter than what is advertised. I would suggest using either the optional rechargable battery pack (hard to find) or simply use lithium AA's. Once the batteries start to fail, the light output drops dramatically. Despite this, this is the best lantern I have ever used, and I've used plenty!!
Great Emergency lighting
I purchased the lamp for my emergency kit and didn't bother to look it over until I was completely in the dark. I was easily able to load the batteries in the bottom and turn the light on even though I was doing it for the first time in the dark. I really like the small design that sits up on stable legs that are padded so as not to slide or scratch my furniture. It lights up one room so that you can operate safely. You could read by this light, but it doesn't take the place of room lighting. Overall, I am very pleased by the product and plan to purchase a second one.
Nice for a Battery Operated Lantern
I recently took this on a 3 day trip to the Smokies. We had 5 children with us and I thought it would be nice for the bear shelters. - It is easy to use and pops right open. - Light output was OK but the shelter was a little large for the little light. It would be very good in a confined area such as a tent. - It is easy to adjust by just holding the button. - Batteries are easy to install and comes with a battery life meter. - Like everything though I just wish the darn thing was lighter. It uses 4 AA batteries. - A rotating deflector would also be nice
Excellent small lantern
The Apollo is an awesome lantern. Very compact and sturdy for a small lantern. The light adjustability is very easy having only to hold down the on button and wait until the light gets to the desired brightness and release. The battery indicator is not that hard to see once you know where it is located. I use this lantern all the time in the backyard or have taken it to a buddies house to put on the table for a bit more light in darker areas. I have to say this isn't completely bright but is decent for its size. If you want a lantern that lights up an entire campsite, this is not the lantern for you. However, if you want a nice, sturdy, compact lantern with decent output then don't hesitate on buying this unit.
Great light for tent camping
Bought this light because I needed a nice light for inside the tent that wouldn't blind me. I have another LED lantern that is brighter than this one, but seems to have less useable light. The Apollo has a great diffuser which spreads the light out evenly throughout the tent. The rubber feet were very handy as was the loop on top of the lantern that I used to hang it from the tent top. The controls are easy to use and very intuitive. The dimming function is really a nice touch. Overall I've been very pleased with my purchase even though it is a bit on the expensive side. But then again, I believe that you are getting what you pay for here and this is a fine lantern that I'd recommend for tent camping or emergency light at home.
