Added so much to our Trip!
We bought the KC III when my daughter was about 1 and used it for shorter hikes and around town for a year. Recently we took it on vacation and it performed flawlessly on longer more rugged hikes. We were able to go places we never could have gotten to with a stroller or with her walking. She's up over 25 lbs., but both my wife and I were able to get comfortable easily with the adjustability of the pack. It's also very comfortable for the rider (with the chin/head pad she's fallen asleep a number of times). The built in sunshade makes it pretty tall, but comes in handy when the weather changes unexpectedly. Plenty of room in the pockets for everything we needed too!
Updated Review
I've now owned and used the Kid Comfort III for about 2 years. My son is now almost 2 1/2 and about 35 lbs. The Kid Comfort III is really well constructed, however, it is top heavy. The child sits very high and when they start to move around to look at different things and try to point or reach for something, it can really throw you off balance. When you load a backpack, you don't put the heaviest items on top or towards the outside of a back. At this point, I really don't use this carrier anymore. It feels like I am carrying a 45+ pack and I worry that he will throw me off balance. I am now resorting to day hikes and use a soft structured carrier.
Have DKC3 will travel!!
I just wanted to say thank you! We bought this pack for our 16 month old son prior to our trip to Spain. We did our research and decided that based on its specs, it was the one for us. We were never disappointed! Miles apon miles of walking during our 21 days in Spain and our son loved it and we loved being free to take pictures. No way this could be done with a stroller. We never heard a whimper, when he was tired, he simply fell asleep. The waistband pockets served perfectly as a wallet for our Euros and storage for our GPS, the multiple rear pockets served as the perfect diaper bag. So we were never without an ample amount of drinks, snacks and diapers for him. But more importantly, even with all the extra items (pockets are BIG), the load bearing system is remarkable! A definite must for any active family… beats the stroller any day of the week as our mobility was never limited and he could see EVERYTHING!
GREAT Pack
Great Product. We got it for our son when he was a year. We had a cheep Kelty before this that was not very comfortable for my wife or I to carry. After doing research online we went to our local retailer to try on some packs. This pack was great, My son loved it and my wife 5' could carry it and I 6' could also carry it. My only complaint is that this pack doesn't have a large enough torso adjustment. I have to max out the adjustments to get it to fit and I could use one notch larger than that with a full day of gear and son on board. I have carried 45lbs comfortably with this pack. I would Highly recommended this pack to a person who normally wears a small or medium framed pack. Larger users check to see if it will work for you. The storage is great for day hikes, It would be a stretch to do serious backpacking and have enough room for everything & Child If you are planing on using this in the colder / windy times I would recommend the rain cover, it works great for keeping the wind off them on winter hikes
Very comfortable
I originally bought another brand but it had problems with the waist belt/lumbar pad slipping out of adjustment so I returned it. About the only things I liked better on the other brand was the better coverage from overhanging branches etc. of the sun shade and the easier to use zippers. The zippers on the Deuter aren't terrible, but they aren't as easy to use. The Deuter Kid Comfort III is a dream to carry. I think this is the most comfortable pack I've ever had on my back, bar none. I provide daycare for my seven month old granddaughter and I love to hike and geocache during the week. A child carrier is a must have item for me so I can get out and do the things I love during the week and take my granddaughter along for the ride. I don't think I'd recommend this pack for babies younger than six or seven months since my granddaughter is just big enough to fit fairly well. On the upside, the pack will work for her for quite a few years. The Deuter seems to be very well made and has all the things I need in a pack .. hydration sleeve, attachment points on the shoulder straps, plenty of room for diapers, snacks, baby toys, and other goodies. The integrated sun shade is very easy to use .. just unzip, pull out, and attach the two lines in the front. Getting my granddaughter in and out of the cockpit is very easy and she's comfortable enough to fall asleep on the trail. The only improvement I'd request is for easier to operate zippers.
Excellent
We bought this so that we could take our 10 month old on hikes with us. It's comfortable for me to use but more importantly he's very happy to be loaded up in it. I have other Deuter equipment which is part of the reason why I bought this brand - their construction is excellent and it's clear that a lot of thought has been put into the features of the carrier. Plenty of pockets mean that it can carry a whole lot of stuff besides our little guy - well organised and well built. The only reason why I don't give a perfect rating is that I don't believe that anything can be called perfect - there's always someway to improve it....
Best product we've bought so far!!
We bought this backpack for our daughter when she was 10 months old - she'll be 2 in May. We rarely use our stroller and only take the backpack when we travel. Our daughter enjoys being able to see her surroundings and is protected from the wind, sun, and rain. There is enough storage for a long day trip. My only suggestion is to sew a soft material on the front pad - when our daughter falls asleep she ends up with a red rash from rubbing on the canvas.
this is a fabulous product
This is a wonderful pack. We have used a borrowed Kelty frame pack for the past 3 years, thinking 'this is as good as it gets.' We didn't really feel like ponying up several hundred bucks for another frame pack, but we decided to take the splurge when it went on sale. MAN, I wish we had bought one earlier! This is a wonderful pack. We take it on light/moderate/weekend hikes in the mountains of Colorado where we live. It is so simple to get kids in/out of, so comfortable and easy to adjust for the wearer - my husband and I can easily swap out our 36 pound 22 month old son for our 3.5 year old 38 pound daughter/swap carrying person too, in the mountains on a slope, NO problem. Could not be better. Half the weight of the smaller, flimsier Kelty. Easily twice as easy to use and twice as comfortable for our children. Don't hesitate to buy this product.
Don't even consider another pack!
My husband, my son, and I all love this pack! Because I am 5' tall and my husband is closer to 6', we have a hard time fitting us both. A lot of the time, we have to compromise on our gear. Not this time; this pack fits us both! The pack has enough torso and tightening adjustments so we both get a great fit. The shoulder straps and back padding are comfortable and breathable. There is a place to put my hydration reservoir, which is important on long hikes. The pack has a ton of storage space for my gear, as well as all the things needed to keep our son happy on the trail. Our 10-month old rides in style, with ample cushioning, ventilated padding, and integrated sun-shade. He's been hiking in a chest pack since he was 2 months old, so he thinks his new ride rocks!
Love this!
We bought this for our daughter when she outgrew her front carrier at about 7 months. We wanted to hike with her, so we looked everywhere for a backpack locally. I did not like the Kelty after 10 minutes of wear, so I did some research. I found this backpack and decided to try it. We loved it right away. We have hiked pretty long days and she would fall alseep in it. We put her in as a 4 year old, and it is still fairly comfortable. She is 42 lbs now. Now it's time for her 7 month old brother to try it!
