This is a great tent! I like space, so I purchased the two-man tent and got the spaciousness I craved. The best feature for me are the two vestabules of space on either side of the tent. I was able to shelter my big backpack, boots, and everything else under the covers and this affored me more inside space than I could use. The tent's frame is designed in such a way that you get plenty of headroom and very little dead space. It's extremely light and keeps the wind out. There is a slight condensation problem, but not enough to be overly concerned. The design of the tent is well thought out and the double zippers on both sides are a big asset.
Good design and construction. I purchased the two person tent because its perfect for one person! It can be a two person, but the quarters will be very tight. Took it out for a week in the smoky mountains. It did well, Had a few days of rain, it remained dry, but there is a slight warning here, the nylon fly will allow a small portion to get in. The two spacious vestibules are a great addition. Didn't have to bring anything inside the tent space.
I love this tent and don't get why people downplay this tent. I am 6'2"and have plenty of room with some to spare. yes, it is snug for two people but you have plenty of room to do whatever so what do you expect? It's a light weight backpacking tent. if you are not comfortable sleeping that close with someone then get a bigger tent or go for a solo tent. set up is super easy. my fist time setting it up took less then 15min by myself. the weight is good enough i wouldn't even mind rocking it solo just to have a good freestanding tent and lots of room to sprawl out. impressed with the construction and the venting of the tent. condensation should never be a problem. all in all, superb tent.
I bought this tent when planning a 3-week road trip with my dog, and to replace my (very sentimental-memoried) 30-year-old Eureka 2-person dome tent. That means I have not experienced all of the tent innovations made over the past 3 decades (my Eureka was not even free-standing). I mention that because those who are more gear-saavy may find fault with this tent. I, on the other hand, LOVE it. It rained almost every night that I camped on this trip - including 2 nights on the SW coast of WA state with wind gusts of 40-50 miles per hour. The tent stayed bone dry, windproof and secure. The fly also dried off very easily/quickly. In eastern WA, I had to set up in high winds off the lake. Yes, the lightweight-ness makes it a bit of a challenge to set up in strong wind (but what lightweight tent is easy to set up in wind?) -- but with a little effort to keep it weighted down with gear as you're putting the poles together and then getting gear inside while you're staking it, it's quite easy to overcome the wind. The complaints I read about the fly design were of no concern to me. On the contrary, I found the fly easy to set up, easy to use/enter/exit the tent, and providing excellent vestibule space for shoes, boots, etc. The complaints another reviewer made about windnoise also make no sense to me. As mentioned, I spent 2 very windy, stormy nights in the tent and found it cozy and easy, comfy sleeping. As a 5'5", 130-pound woman with a 30-pound dog, the tent was the perfect size -- allowing for plenty of room for gear (and for my dog to move around, spread out or cuddle up, as she pleased). It would be fine with a second person not much bigger than I am. I would not recommend this tent for a larger person unless you plan to use it solo. That's the only concern I mention. Otherwise, I highly recommend this tent.
Its only major drawback, extremely disappointing for me, and ultimately making in useless in a practical sense was some type of chemical residue coating all the fabric parts of tent. I assume it has something to do with waterproofing. You can feel it on your hands after handling the tent which was a bit disconcerting. That alone I could deal with but this residue makes the fabric stick to the poles when erected so that any light breeze makes the fabric emit popping noises as it rubs on the poles. This becomes so loud in higher winds 10mph+ that it made it literally impossible to sleep. I can only liken it to sound of very heavy water drops falling from a tree onto your tent, it was torture.
Still evaluating the tent but I just have to praise Big Agnes Customer Service. Best customer service ever. Just bought a tent and being an idiot I tried to put the long poles on the short side and bent/broke the pole. They sent me an entire new pole set the next day - no charge - so that I could have a new set in time for my upcoming weekend trip. I just have to send back the broken set. Very nice, very helpful, definitely recommend a big agnes tent. Oh, and I like the tent too but the customer service has me sold.
I was SO excited to get my BA tent. I love my sleeping bag with a passion and could not wait to use my new tent. In a 10 mph wind in Moab, the tent collapsed, and the rainfly pole (which sticks out in the PRECISE place your head ducks under through the door) went straight through the fly like a hot knife in butter. On top of that, to get into the tent, you have to creep to the tiniest spot of the vestibule door to get to the zipper, then almost crawl under the rainfly pole like its a laser! Sure its entertaining, but NOT convenient or smart for a [$] tent.It was only about 45F at night and very breezy, and by the next morning so much condensation gathered in the tent that my sleeping bag was wet...my down sleeping bag. Needless to say I was unimpressed and slightly heartbroken. It is lightweight, but the REI UL is much lighter and easier to put up.
I purchased this tent for my husband as a backpacking and kayaking tent, as the tent was listed to be 1 pound lighter than his current 15 year old backpacking tent. On REI and a competitor's website the weight is listed as 3# 6oz. However, I received the tent today and the tent (tent, rainfly, stakes, guylines, poles and bag)weighs 3# 13 oz, or a whopping 7 oz heavier. I then went on Big Agnes website and what is listed under REI Specs as "weight" is really the "trail weight." Per Big Agnes website that means no stakes and no guylines. The packed weight is 3# 13 oz on Big Agnes (exactly what I measured at home). BTW, the Copper Spur UL2 tent pad is 5 oz in addition. I'm not sure if REI does this for all manufacturers weights, or if it is only related to BA. Just be aware of this. I haven't decided yet if I will return this tent for a lighter tent or not.
So I bought this tent based on years of hearing about BA tents, the amazing light weight and design features and lots of experience with other tents. I never considered spending this kind of money on a three season tent, but as I've gotten older every ounce counts. I opted for the UL2 over the UL1 as I thought I'd be too cramped in the UL1 when out for a week at a time. When I set the tent up in my living room I know I made the right choice. Advertised as 90 inches long this tent, staked out is 82 at most and that is generous. The width is also less than advertised, 47 by 42. I don't know how the company can misrepresent dimensions. This tent would be very cramped for two adults. I don't know how other reviewers talk about it being so roomy. Since I plan on using it as a solo tent this may not be a real problem, but it is disappointing. Caveat Emptor!
Even though I haven't used this tent in the outdoors, I already love it. Over the last couple years, I've been through numerous tents looking for the right combination of roominess, yet remain light enough for fast packing. Perks; Lightweight, lots of headroom, built-in vent on rain-fly. Not-so-excited about: double doors (personal preference)EXPENSIVE footprint, which is a must because the materials are VERY thin.
