My friend has a cheap U.N.H.C.R tent that he has had for 25 years that has fared better than my 4 year old - only 4 camping trips (totaling less that 2 weeks) REI tent. HORRIBLE!
One thing that I have found about this tent is that I can always depend on it. It's perfect for just an overnight venture out into your local forested area or multi-day backcountry backpacking trips. The vertical wall design will now become a requirement for any other tent I buy in the future as it does create the much needed headroom other tents lack in. The fly works great and as long as you have it drawn tight and the vents open, no condensation will seep inside. I can't stop praising this tent, and I'm looking forward to the many more nights I'll be spending in it whether it be on the barrier islands of Coastal Georgia or the mountains of the Southern Appalachians. Definitely a must-buy.
I love this tent! To me it represents the perfect compromise between weight, durability, space, and price. Yes, there are lighter tents out there, but they are not as roomy and I question their durability. Plus, they cost $200 more. I need to know that my tent is going to hold up when the going gets tough. So far, this tent has. It has held up very well to severe rain and high winds - the dark side of Texas weather. I use the T2 as a solo tent. Two people would fit comfortably inside, but with me and my gear it's like a bomb-proof palace.
I have had this tent for about a year and a half now and I absolutely love it. I have used it backpacking in thunder storms in Hawaii to below freezing at Mt. Rainer, WA. It is a breeze to set up even in the rain/wind/dark. It is water proof tried and true (those thunderstorms in Hawaii are nuts and the tent held up fantastically). My favorite feature is all the mesh so on nice nights I can leave off the rain fly and feel like I'm just under the stars without all the bugs eating me alive. It is lightweight and great for extended backpacking trips. It also has plenty of room for two in the tent without feeling cramped. It's almost like a box shape so you don't get claustrophobic like in tents where the sides slant downward. I have also used it solo and it feels huge when I'm by myself (although I am only 5'3"). I can't emphasize how much I love this tent. The only down side is that the rain fly collects quite a bit of condensation. I have never been wet in the tent, but when packing it up on a damp morning, you have to take the rain fly off carefully to avoid getting the tent wet and pack it on the outside of your bag so it will dry during the day. But nothing is ever perfect and this is easy to do, so I still love this tent.
The REI Quarter Dome T2 tent held up during a recent trip to Yosemite National Park ( 7-22-10 ). I spend 3 days backpacking at 10,000 feet elevation near Young Lakes; 6.5 miles north of Tuolumne Meadows. On one of the afternoons I got caught up in an unusual summer storm, which developed rapidly. Since, I pitched the tent just at the tree line, I decided to hunker down in my tent with my 12 year old son. We stayed dry and safe through three hour storm. We experienced s heavy lighting, rain, high winds, sleet, and penny size hail. Everything inside the tent stayed dry. I was very surprise the rain fly did not tear. We put our shoes and packs under the vestibule. My 70 liter backpack was leaning against the no-seeum walls. Forthe most part items under the vestibule stayed dry less the things touching the ground. I give the T2 Quarter Dome by REI very high marks for staying warm and dry during our eastern Sierra summer thunder storm. The tent and poles are color coordinated for easy setup. The three point single pole hub design really keeps the walls vertical. The T2 designs gives you a sense of space while inside the tent. My son and I were comfortable with our closed cell air sleeping pads and sleeping bags. Plenty of space for our clothes. The four corner pockets come in very handy for storing eyeglasses and headlamps. A small window / portal in the rain fly would be nice as long as it does not compromise the T2 wight or durability.
I used this tent for a 5 day backpacking trip and it was amazing. Then stored it for a few years. Just opened it up to use it again on another backpacking trip and found the rain fly had disintegrated. The velcro ties came off, it's tacky and all the seams are flaking! This is a brand new tent, albeit quite a few years old due to a backpacking hiatus. What a horrible waste of money and such a disappointment from such a well respected company.
Out of the box, great value, great performance! Completely dry and clean after every use, stored loosely in large mesh bag in between uses. After only several trips of 2-4 days each, rainfly had become sieve - all tape dried, out, cracking, peeling and all ties peeling off. (Ties are just taped on!) Seam sealing 100% with seam grip couldn't even fix it as waterproofing itself failed. I used to trust REI products and was willing to spend more there, assuming a good product. Times have changed. As in the case of another reviewer, was simply told that I should expect failure. Sure, but not after less than 25 nights.
This is a great tent!!! I would recommend this tent to backpackers. Do be aware that this tent is for experienced or seasoned backpackers. The material is lightweight, which is a great plus, but you do need to be cautious of the material. I love the design of the poles and the hub system. No longer do you have to figure out what pole goes where, and the break down of the hub system is extremely easy to fit back into the bag. Even with the 3/4 length poles the tent is very stable when the rainfly is used, but even with the doors open the tent is firm. I would definitely recommend this tent to backpackers who are looking for a great tent.
This tent was great. I first used it with my non-camping girlfriend on a two day hike. Even though she had never set up a tent she was able to get this one up without much help the first night. It's got plenty of room for two people used to sleeping in mummy bags, but if king sized hotel beds are your idea of relaxation it will feel a bit tight. The two doors are great for both to be able to get in and take off your boots at the same time, but the vestibules are a little to small to store anything more than a day pack in. It dries quickly, is easy to take down and pack, and has great vents in the fly. All in all it's a pretty great tent.
Set the tent up a few times in the yard. Cussed myself and the tent for about 10 minutes. Once you figure it out it becomes really easy. About the only downfall is that the tent is heavy. I am no light weight die hard for sure but do try to be with in reason. My big four weighs around 12 lbs. Also bought the footprint which I believe helps. I am a tad over 6'1 and find it just the correct lenght. You may want to try in the store if you are taller though. Compression sack is great, everything else is of high quality. I do 70% of my backpacking alone but bought the tent for the added room and the right to bring a friend along if needed.
