Love 'em
Would not trade them. Lightweight, great fit, wool but 'soft/cashmere' feel. While these are considered 'liners', they were the sole gloves I wore on a recent winter 3-day backpacking trip w/temps of high-teens to low-forties. I had a heavier pair, but never pulled them out of my backpack. I consider myself a 'heat-generator', others in cold temps may need something more.
Just okay, not warm enough
I bought these to use as liners for the Mt. HW "Epic" gloves to use mainly for warmth on a five-day trip in the San Pedro parks wilderness, NM in late October. The first night as I was hanging my food, I had just these liners on, and within twenty minutes of being in 35 degree weather, my fingers were getting hard and frozen. Even when used with my other gloves, my hands were cold and it wasn't even freezing. They also wore out very quickly, by the time I got home, they had a hole in the finger and many frayed stitches ready to fall apart. Sorry, not impressed.
A rare let down from SmartWool
This is in fact the first review I've done, so this should tell how poorly these gloves are constructed. I have used these gloves a total of two times, both as glove liners, and they have already developed holes. I would say I used them gingerly at worst. I own several pairs of SmartWool socks, and intend to buy more, but I will never buy another pair of glove liners from them unless they greatly improve the quality and/or design. Lucky for me, REI being the great place it is, I can return these with no worries!
Comfy gloves -- wool is magical
I purchased these gloves exclusively for running during the winter months but wound up using them on hikes, during the bike commute, in the mountains, etc. They aren't windproof, but that's only an issue if they get wet. Fortunately wool dries quickly and, while kept dry, these are nice and toasty (but breathable). I used them a LOT over the past two years and they are now starting to wear out (developing holes). I don't mind replacing them since they're quite cheap, but I wish they would've lasted longer.
Great gloves, alone and as liners
I couldn't decide between synthetic and smart wool so I gave these a try. To my surprise they kept warm in temp. I would not expect them to work (30F). Bought them originally to use as a liner under my windproof biking glove. Together the two gloves work great. Had my hand outside my car while driving 70mph at temps of 35F and did not get cold at all. Only problems I have had are when dealing with velcro (likes to stick to it due to being wool) and other small sharp objects (key-rings) tend to catch a thread and pull. Not a big deal though as long as you avoid them and w/ the velcro pulling it away slowly left no noticeable damage. Great gloves, feel like their not there, allow for better circulation if under used as a liner (think hand-warmers, allow for better heat transfer).
best running gloves
I always start off with freezing cold and sometimes red hands when I run and then they warm up. Usually I start off with gloves then take them off. These are great because they keep my hands warm enough but my hands don't get too hot either so I don't have to take them off and hold them for the rest of my run. And I don't have to worry about them starting to smell so quickly. I have really small hands and I found that even the smalls were slightly too big.
Overall, a good pick
These are a nice pair of liner gloves. Even though mine developed a couple of small holes, they are still functional after 5 years of not-very-rugged use. I like them for cold weather running, because they keep my hands warm but breath nicely. They work fine for hikes in cool weather without much rugged terrain. For backpacking and hikes with more rugged terrain or cooler weather, I prefer a more rugged, windstopper glove.
Awesome Liners
I love these gloves. I live in Northern Maine, and they keep me plenty warm. I wear them by themselves in cool weather, when walking the dog or something where rugged gloves aren't required. And when the temp drops, and I'm working outdoors, I wear them under my Marmot Exum gloves. So far, I've been just fine in all but the very coldest weather, and even then if I'm not outside for too long. Best liners I've ever had.
Great!
Great Product! I bought these as a liner and wore them in conjunction with the Mountain Hardwear Epic glove during a 4 day skiing trip in Colorado last week. The combo was perfect for temperatures from the single digits up into the 30s. When combined with the wind/waterproof Epic gloves they were a perfect set of skiing gloves and left me much more dexterous then those around me.
I love these gloves
I use these liners all the time. The thing I like the best about them is that they make it easy to slide the over glove off while keeping the liner on. I have two other pairs of liners and they always get stuck to the over glove when I try to pull it off but leave the liner on (when needed extra dexterity). They seem just as warm as my other liners and are more comfortable.
