Self-arrest worthy.

Unfortunately I had to use it to self-arrest but it worked how its supposed to. I was going down a 40 degree slope in powdery snow with my axe in hand. Out of no where my next step was solid ice. I slammed my axe in the ground and put all my weight into the axe. I stopped before I knew it. Its extremely light weight so I bring it anytime im climbing. More info. I am 5ft9 and use the 60cm axe. I was 190 with pack when I self arrested. More info I am 5ft9, I am 190 with climbing pack. I use the 60cm

Great for what it's designed for

This is a great, lightweight axe and will serve you will... if you know its limitations. If you're aiming to climb technical ice pitches or self-arrest a 250 pound climber on 45 degree neve, you're bound for disappointment. However, if you're headed out for a ski tour or early-season trail run, this is a great addition to your kit that won't weigh you down.

Lightweight

Great ice axe for spring or early summer hiking in the rockies. Excellent tool for glissading safely, without having to haul my heavier and longer full sized steel ice axe. Extremely lightweight and short. It is made completely of aluminum, so its not for regular long term use. Note the spike end does not have a closed end, so prepare for snow to lodge in it, if used as a staff on steep slopes.

Absolutely Amazing!

It's ultra light and it works amazingly well for mountaineering. Need to arrest on a 45 degree snow slope? Check. The 50cm version looks like a toy but performs like a full strength ice axe. The only thing is that it might have trouble with heavy duty ice. I would bring ice tools if it got that serious.

Great axe

Perfect axe to bring ski mountaineering. Probably not the best for routing glacier travel.
