I haven't purchased a new tent in over 10 years. I have been using a Peak 1 Aries 2 person tent for all that time. (Not that I am a Coleman fan) but the tent just couldn't be beat for one person. Now married I needed more room and wanted to keep it light weight since I would be the one carrying it. The QD3 is the perfect tent, I even choose it over the MSR Mutha Hubba, because of the vestibule size and because of the room (wife and Dog) I agree with most of the other reviews that 3 people my size are not getting in that tent comfortably, but my wife, myself and a 45 pound dog fit just fine! Wonderful tent and the price cannot be beat!
This ultralight tent is well-designed, and its many features provide the benefits intended. It is well-ventilated; has lots of room in the vestibules; is easy to pitch, adjust and pack in inclement weather; the inside pockets are convenient. While it has enough room for two adults and a child, it is "just enough" room from side-to-side, a critical dimension for kinetic sleepers. It would be serviceable but tight for 3 adults; personal comfort being in close-proximity would dictate its appropriateness for that use. I think for most people it would be uncomfortable with 3 adults. For two adults and a dog, it could be great. Overall, this is a superb ultra-light tent for a family of three, and when compared to other options, is a great value as well.
This tent worked overtime recently on a very rainy trip to Alaska. The fly worked great when pulled very taught though another couple of inches over the toe area of the tent would have been nice. Overall a great, light tent but for two people, I would definitely go for the three person one, it's pretty cramped in there!
I had the Half Dome 2HC, this has replaced it. it is lighter, bigger and can compress into a XS REI stuff sack both tent & fly... It is smaller than my sleeping bag.
We chose this tent for our Philmont Scout Ranch backpacking trip that we took in June, 2007. We set up and took down this tent for two weeks and did not have any trouble with it at all. We had all types of weather including heavy rain and high winds and the tent never failed us. Another plus was that we were able to leave the fly attached to the tent which helped us to set up and take down quickly. I would definitely recommend this tent!
My friend had this on a 3 week camping trip and loved it, so I got one. After one use, I definitely like the lightweight, the ease of setup and takedown, the 2 doors, the fly is taught. I just used a tarp on the bottom. The zippers are smooth. I can reach the fly zipper with ease from inside and reaching over. I look forward to seeing it work in rain and wind myself, but my friend stayed dry in hours of downpour out west. It's ideal for 2 medium size adults or one person...tight fit for 3 adults, I think. I love the option to keep the fly hooked on through setups; I'm going to check out just folding the fly part-way open at night. I'm 5'3 and can sit up very comfortably inside. Four pockets inside are medium to small size; 2 on each end. I would prefer a roomier vestibule and an extra vent/window. This is great for my usage of weekends and short trips.
If you go backbacking with a friend this is the tent for you. It has a nice lightweight, sturdy design and stores nicely in your pack. The inside of the fly gets wet, but the inside of the tent stays dry, so I usually unzip the two fly entrances when it is not raining. The dead end pole sleves make set up a breeze. It is one of the lightest tents in its category that I have found and for the price it is a great buy!
We bought this tent specifically for a 2 1/2 week bike tour - we were looking for something lightweight, yet sturdy, easy to put up at the end of a long day of riding, with lots of space to store our gear at night. This tent proved to work out great! Kept us dry when it rained, compressed down really small for easy carrying on the back of a bike, incredibly simple to put up and take down.
I am disabled and only car camp now. This tent is easy for even me to set up as there are only two poles that slide easily through the sleeves. With two of us there is room to spare and we keep warm inside. When you show up late at your camp site this tent is quick to set up. The two doors of the tent allow one person to go outside without disturbing the other person.
It's a great tent although setting up the floor thingy is a challenge. It's an irrengular pentagon, but only slightly, so aligning tent with under-thingy always slows us down, as does a hard-to-remember order of operations. A couple of guide markings and better sewn-in instructions and this epic tent would be 'legendary'.
