GUYOT DESIGNS SPLASHGUARD - UNIVERSAL OCD Review
#OCDBACKPACKER PRODUCT REVIEW / REVIEWING SPLASHGUARD - UNIVERSAL, SMILEY FACE by GUYOT DESIGNS I have had this product for 5+ years and it still gives me functional joy. The Splashguard comes in at 0.35 oz. (9 grams) and fits Wide-Mouthed Nalgene Water Bottles. The design has two holes, both help with pouring of water. The top hole prevents “glugging” while the bottom hole is the perfect size for an adult human being. If you don’t have this product you run the risk of splashing all of your water over your face, leading to dehydration and / or death. For most of the time, however, it works and makes you smile as a bi-product. DATA SUMMARY: Guyot Designs Splashguard - Universal by Guyot Designs • RETAIL: $5 USD • WEIGHT: 0.35 oz. (9 grams) • DIMENSIONS: 2.06“ Diameter (5.24 cm) • RATING: 9 / 10 • ★ STAR PRODUCT (Functional + Smile) • ₩ WATER-PROOF • #ƒ MULTI-FUNCTIONAL (Splashguard, Smiles, & Saves Lives) I would recommend this to my friends. Makes me smile. "It is rough out there. Love one another." - #OCDBACKPACKER
Great for road trips, be sure to clean regularly
I'm mostly happy with having purchased this- it's offered a lot of convenience for a few dollars. Behind me are the days of sloshing a waterpark's worth of liquid into my lap during a bumpy road trip, or taking an impromptu Nalgene shower on a busy day. Some may say this contributes to the true dirtbag experience, but I relish this small amount of control (over flow rate). This has also resulted in a (type II) funny experience where a tired hiking partner doused himself while attempting to refill my bottle from a vigorous spring, while this piece was still on. The only downside to this is that the ridges along the mouthpiece and underside of the piece seem to accumulate mildew/mold fairly rapidly, and this can be hard to spot on darker colors of the product. I wish there weren't raised edges of text underneath to catch bacteria on, which make it just a bit harder to clean. When using this at home, I make sure to put it in the dishwasher at least weekly, but I can lose track of this in the backcountry... ick factor. On my other Nalgene, I use HumanGear's CapCAP+ which accomplishes something similar (at a higher price) and somehow doesn't seem to accumulate mold as quickly.
Performed well...but tasted like rubber
The splash guard fits just right (nalgene) and is very comfortable to drink from. However, as only one other review noted, it imparts a rubber taste to your beverage. I primarily drink water from my nalgene bottle, so maybe it was especially noticeable to me; flavored beverages may fare better. I happened to find another splash guard from guyotdesigns that was made out of plastic (same two-hole design) and it works just as good without the rubber taste. So, I do recommend this splash guard if you are not picky about taste, as it does function well. But if you ARE picky about taste, I would seek the plastic version instead.
no SPLASH here!
I am a teacher as well as the Health Supervisor at a Day Camp. This product is great, I have recommended it to many camper's parents this summer. I freeze my water bottle over night. My favorite part of this product is that it prevents the big ice from sliding down the bottle and bumping me on my lip as I drink. I can drink faster w/ out being careful. I have noticed that I and my campers drink a lot more water with the splashguard on. Great to stay hydrated. It's simple to take off and put on for refilling/ washing your bottle. I think kids enjoy the designs which is another way to keep them interested in staying hydrated-with frequent swimming it's often difficult to motivate kid's to drink water b/c they don't realize that they need it/ they feel cool.
Grown-up sippy cup!
This thing could be in an infomercial. A monochromatic person goes to drink from their wide mouth water bottle but spills all over the front of their polo shirt. Arms in the air (spilling more water), disgruntled look on face, impossibly soaked - this is what happens when you don’t use a Splashguard. Enter: Splashguard A group of happy hikers smile and sip water, birds chirping, a troop of children and puppies playing in the background, a double rainbow. It’s a good thing. Fun to use, easy to adjust, and a great canary in the coal mine - when you notice the smile is a tad dingy, it’s probably time to clean your whole bottle.
Just what I needed!
This is exactly what I've been telling my friends I need so I'm glad I found one at REI! I am always spilling water all over myself when I use my Nalgenes so this little guy has pretty much eliminated it. It's possible I'm the only one with this problem, but I would imagine it is good for kids too as they seem to spill about as much as I do :) It's made of a rubbery material and I have had zero problems with it not staying in place or falling out on me. I actually thought it was going to be too small when I first looked at it but it's not, it fits PERFECTLY! Easy to clean and I actually just put it inside my Nalgene when I'm not using it.
More Comfortable than Nalgene version
I must say that I love this splash guard, much more so than the Nalgene version. It helps that it is flexible, and has more grip to the inside of the bottle. I use this with the standard Nalgene wide-mouth bottle, and it bothers me just a little that the fit is not quite perfect. While it performs by preventing splash, there are small gaps between the rim of the bottle and the splash guard right near where you drink, so if you are not careful, you can get a little bit of extra liquid coming out of the bottle and trickling down your face. Basically, it looks like it is puckering just a little bit cause the fit isn't quite perfected. I still like it, but just be forewarned.
Quality of life improver
I have had a wide mouth nalgene for years now and I had just accepted that I would dump water on myself regularly when drinking out of it. I saw this at REI during the MDW sale and thought "why not?" to myself. I popped it in my nalgene in the car, took a sip, and realized that I could've been THRIVING with this small addition. I got the smiley one and we smile at EACH OTHER every time I go for a sip. I was able to drink out of my nalgene in a MOVING CAR on a road with stop lights with 0 fear. I suggest this to any and all nalgene lovers and users, I tried, but I can't capture how pleased I am with this purchase and how amazed I am by it. :)
One major problem
These really are a great product. Who knew such a simple little piece of plastic could be such a great idea. It helps control the flow a lot, so there's less risk of splashing or spilling. Unfortunately, at least for myself and my wife, if you don't clean them VERY often, they develop some kind of mold-looking stain. Your mileage may vary. Thankfully they're easy enough to scrub with a toothbrush and pop in the dishwasher, but stock up on these all the same. They could probably improve this by adding an anti-microbial coating.
Great guard for Nalgene Widemouth
I bought one of these a while back for my Nalgene bottle for use when hiking and camping. Any time my hand jostled or shifted when drinking I'd end up splashing myself in the face, which was annoying. I saw this in REI a while back, didn't think about it and then when I went back I picked it up and have used it ever since. I just picked up a second one to use on another Nalgene in use by my family. I am currently using both splashguards on a regular basis during hiking and day hikes, as well as at work. I would recommend this to adaptor to widemouthed Nalgene bottles as it is very useful and very nice.
