FANTASTIC!

Best packing dessert I've ever had. By far. Shocked with reviews saying it lacks flavor. I licked the package clean! I mean, of course it isn't chessecake per se - more like mousse - but who would expect cheesecake? I am not easy to please dessert-wise and I thought it was awesome. Guess it just goes to show we all need to take these reviews with a grain or two of salt, as some people will never be pleased - at least until they've written a poor review...

This product was an utter disappointment. I was expecting a freeze-dried powdered cheesecake, which would have been fine on it's own, but they obviously thought it needed more consistency and added some type of chemical thickener. It tasted mostly of whatever the thickening agent was, and not even like chocolate. The cookie crumble packet, advertised as a topping, is just 3/4 of an oreo that has been crushed.

Reviewers don't know what they're talking about

These fools have no idea what they're talking about. absolutely indulgent. delicious. Get the water level right and you're in dreamland here. This thing was literally fought over between me and my girlfriend. absolute fiends. cheesecake hyenas. the key is to go into it with doubt. no way can a freeze dried cheesecake actually be good. not a chance. but yet here we are - a day after returning home and putting everything away, i couldn't shake the feeling that i had to say something about this absolute 5 star michelin gourmet explosion. next time i will bring more.

Think pudding, not cheesecake.

This is certainly not "cheesecake," it doesn't even taste like cheesecake. But it is delicious as heck. think of a very good chocolate pudding that looks like builder's cement, and the cookie topping is pathetically small, but is easily remedied by bringing along 3-4 of "america's favorite cookie" (creme filled chocolate cookies, do the math) to crumble on top. Serves two for a hearty dessert, or three for a light dessert. I do have to say, that if you just put away a "two serving" package of whatever meal backpacker's pantry you wanted, you won't have room for this. We wound up eating it for breakfast the next day. Worth every penny, and coming with all of our future backpacking trips. It's like instant jello, only a touch runnier, and mixes up with water instead of milk.

The Best Camping Dessert EVER

This is HANDS DOWN the single best camping dessert I have EVER HAD!!! I cannot recommend it highly enough. We had also packed some camping Brownies (which were awful) and the plain ole cheesecake and in the end, we both agreed that we wished we had just packed more of this. So creamy and sweet and delicious. You will be trying to lick the bag clean! As for the con that it isn't health: C'mon, it's CHEESECAKE! You know that it isn't healthy! Backpacker's Pantry, Please don't ever discontinue this one!!!

Weird disgusting pudding

I was so excited to crack open the cheesecake on my last night of camping. It was going to be great! This was easy to prepare (only needs cold water), but holy cow it was messy. My hands were covered in the goo. I let it sit for about 30 minutes (at altitude), and even after the extended rehydration time, this was a complete mushy mess. It tasted like really bad off-brand instant pudding. Next time, I think I'll just bring instant pudding with me...

YUMMY AND MESSY

I took this on my "graduation backpack trip" after an 8 week backpacking class. After a fun time singing the one campfire song we all knew (Happy Birthday) I brought this out to make. Sent it around the campfire and everyone that had some loved the chocolate yum although a bit messy. I think it had to do with our ambiance lighting of glow sticks and campfire. Way too much for one person, maybe even two people. The next morning several of us had a few chocolate stains here and there. Takes cold water and there is a sprinkle packet of crunchy stuff on the top. A bit messy, but still yum!

What a treat!

This can be a little messy if you don't have a long enough utensil for mixing, but it's still totally worth it! Texture and flavor are pretty much a chocolate mousse with a nice mix of cheesecake to add a little richness and complexity. The crumbles add a little something, mostly a variety in texture from the heavy mousse. We tried the Mocha Mousse Pie after this based on reviews, but strongly preferred this one.

Excellent, when made in the bag!

My first attempt at this didn't go so well, since I was traveling alone and hoped to get two desserts out of this-- making it in a bowl (even covering it, as instructed) just didn't work so well, it ended up simultaneously lumpy and runny, despite thorough stirring. Attempt #2 however, which I made in the bag, turned out fantastic. Something about the pouch makes it work so much better. I will definitely get this again, and make it all in the bag at once-- and maybe eat it all at once!

Pretty darned good

This was super easy to make and tasted very good. It was very creamy and light, tasted just like chocolate cheesecake. The only thing that bothered me was that the packaging said to sprinkle the chocolate graham cracker crust over the top. There wasn't any graham cracker crust provided It seems that this wasn't included with the package. Regardless, I would highly recommend this dessert. It was very tasty.

What does whip briskly mean?

I was looking for a desert to share on a backpacking trip with my daughter, I attempted to follow directions exactly, but the line of whip briskly for two minutes is difficult, at home I would expect that to mean using a whisk or something to fluff with air, not sure how I was to do this with only a camp spoon. Two other groups on our camp-out also had this same desert but the best results came from reducing water mixed in and none set up anything like a cheese cake, more like chocolate slime.
