Luxury Camping
I got this for an upcoming trek where I'll be hiking/trekking during the day and camping at night. I wanted something that would work better than using a rolled-up fleece for a pillow. The pillow itself is very soft, squishy, and comfortable, and it lofts quickly after unrolling it from its compressed state. The outer material is also soft and comfortable against your face. It's very lightweight but not very compressible so it's going to take up more space in my pack than I had hoped. The good night's sleep without neck pain will be worth it though. In the REI photos, only one side of the pillow is shown. I got the geometric fabric, and on that pillow at least the reverse side is a dark gray fabric and not the same geometric fabric. Both fabrics are super soft so I don't mind the difference, though the dark gray fabric seems to be a lint magnet. To compress the pillow, you roll it up and stuff it into a sleeve on the pattern side and cinch up a compression cord. In its compressed state, it's probably 1/3 the size of its non-compressed state. Also, I got the small size which seems totally adequate-- I can't imagine needing a larger pillow for camping.
Great for Motorcycle Camping
I've been motorcycle camping for a number of years, and the subject of having a pillow was always a problem I couldn't solve: My 'home' pillow was comfortable, but a pain to pack. So, I'd forgo a pillow from home, and buy a 'bargain' pillow that I would toss at the end of the trip. But the bargain turned out to be no bargain - they were invariably poor quality. Enter the Therma Rest pillow. Easy to pack, and comfortable. Only thing is - I need 2 for my personal comfort. This isn't a fault of the pillow - I usually use 2 pillows at home, so it's what I'm accustomed to. Helps having a restful night's sleep - and how much is that worth?
Great travel pillow
A nice little pillow. It packs down pretty small and fluffs back up pretty well. (I did have to wash it and send it through the dryer when it got here since it was stored packed tight. But it fluffed up with just one cycle) Haven't tried it out camping yet but did use it sleeping on the floor on a road trip and it was pretty darn comfy. I sleep on my side so I had to bunch it up a little (I like a sort of firm pillow) but it was comfy all night long. It fit well in the top of my sleeping bag so it stayed under my head without having to chase it around. I look forward to not sleeping on a folded up sweatshirt ever again!
Thick yet compressible!!!
This is one of my favorite pieces of gear. I wanted a pillow that had some fluff to it, and I found this. Most backpacking pillows are so thin that your head is resting on the ground. This pillow is thicker than my pillow at home but yet compresses to the size of a size 10 shoe! It will inflate pretty fast, especially if you help it out by hitting the sides. Putting it in the dryer after using it really fluffs it up too. I bought the Medium size and it is perfect! If I was really looking to save space in my bag I would get the small. But otherwise I love this one! I will never use another flat backpacking pillow again!
So comfy!
I have a difficult time sleeping while camping, and my previous inflatable/memory foam backpacking pillow just wasn't working. It slid around and left my neck and shoulders sore. I decided to try this pillow and WOW! It is so amazingly comfortable! It felt just like my shredded latex pillow I use at home, and had zero weird smells. Love the fabric texture and the fun-guy print. The only downside is that it's twice the size of my previous backpacking pillow when packed down, but totally worth the better night's sleep (I did get the large size, to be fair). Would definitely recommend, especially if you are more of a car camping person.
Comfy - Yes! Washing, then drying - a royal pain!
Slept with it and it fluffed very well. BUT, I like to wash things before I use them. Used directions on pillow - but it became so saturated that the washer would not spin it dry. It took 3 days and a combination of letting it leak water, squeezing it out, and I don't remember how many hours in the dryer (on medium setting so I would not cook it) to get it dry, or so I thought! Compressed it and headed out. Noticed that my sleeping bag stuff sack was wet. It was the darn pillow. Heading down the road, I squeezed out more water. It slept damp that night. After a warm day in the tent the next day, it was finally ready.
Very good pillow!
I picked up a medium for backpacking trips because it's light-weight and compresses well. When rolled up it fits between my pack and neck while on the move for extra neck comfort or, I just dangle it off the pack. It also fits in the bottom pocket of my 68L pack along with my sleeping bag. When sleeping I fold it in half and it fits perfectly in the "mummy" head portion of my sleeping bag. It stays folded in half throughout the night because of the synch cord, no matter how much you toss and turn. I usually prefer two pillows and found that on a recent 5 day trip this little pillow did the trick. Another great use is for long flights. I found that I could form this thing in to many different configurations weather I had an aisle, middle or window seat.
Piece of Junk!
I received this as a birthday gift. I've never had an issue with any of the Therm-A-Rest products I've owned (quite a few). This pillow is the exception. When I first got the pillow, I unrolled it and noticed immediately that it felt like it was filled with golf balls and baseballs. I followed the instructions on the tag that said to wash it and dry it for maximum loft. When I opened the washing machine, a seam had split and the machine was full of what appeared to be shredded shipping foam. Some pieces were as large as 2-3 inches, which explains the way it felt. I contacted Therm-A-Rest and got the usual corporate run-around (although I did at least get a response). This will be going back to REI for a refund, thankfully they stand behind the products they sell even if the manufacturer does not.
versatile and comfortable
I originally got 2 of these (medium size) for 20+ mile hiking/camping with a friend and they worked out so well I take one on car/plane rides now. They compress to about 1/4 the actual size and fit well in/on a small to medium backpack. I imagine the small size pillow would be best if space is at a premium, and they may be a tad heavy on super long hikes if weight restriction is at a premium, but the medium works out well for me and I like the larger sleep surface. I tried inflatable versions and returned them all, no amount of padding or underinflation helped make them comfortable. These are soft and plushy and highly recommended.
Love this pillow!!!
This is such a great pillow! I was skeptical at first because of how lumpy it appeared after being freshly unpacked, but the foam inside puffs up super well to make for a great pillow. I'm usually pretty picky about my camp sleep systems (comfort is super high on my priority list) and was worried that the small might be too small, but its the perfect size! Very impressed with this product, especially given the great price and low weight. I'll be bringing it with me on the PCT this summer. My boyfriend borrowed it for about 5 minutes and thats all it took to convince him to buy the same one to replace his current camp pillow.
