How to Choose a Backpacking Tent

This product is not available. Good news: we have a newer version.
This freestanding tent with two doors and two vestibules is amazingly under 4 pounds, but doesn't compromise on durability and function.

My buddy and I just came back from a two week trek in Uttarakhand, India, where we employed the Quarter Dome UL. Halfway into our trek, we were hit by a freak three-day storm that dumped the heaviest rains the region had seen in over 50 years. The two of us were cramped, but warm and dry; the tent even stayed standing in the snow when another trekker's failed (see attached photo). I cannot imagine being more satisfied.
I bought this tent for me to use solo and did so about a half dozen times. Always cleaned and dried it before putting away. Great little tent that is easy to put up and kept me dry. I took it out recently after a few years in storage and the tape seams have all flaked off in the bathtub floor. I think I can reseal this ok, but more concerning is the fly. The entire inside is sticky, plus the tape seams flakes off AND the tie backs came off with it. I'm not sure if I can rescue the fly. It seems like all the waterproof coatings of this era are failing - this tent, stuff sacks, my backpack. So disappointing as this equipment is all in otherwise fantastic shape but the stickiness makes most things basically unusable. This tent was not cheap so I am not sure what to do!
Took this tent to Philmont Scout Ranch as a compromise. I didn't know if I'd be sharing the tent with my nephew or not. He paired with another scout and I was OK carrying the weight of it alone. When you're a 5'3" female, fast approaching 50, the lighter your pack the better (esp. when you're a flatlander dealing with 6000-12,000 ft. altitudes). Sometimes had difficulty getting the poles to bend into the holes but as a rule, set-up/take-down was quick and easy. Light weight & small footprint were great. Good ventilation yet stayed dry in the rain. Would have been tight for 2 to share but possible and worth it when pack weight is a factor.
We love this tent. We own about 6 tents and have seen many different construction designs. This tent is our favorite as it is light weight with 2 doors and 2 vestibule sides. Great vents if you like fresh air even with fly on. We couldn't ask for more for the price. We spent 10 hours sitting in the rain in the High Sierras this summer with this tent. No leaks, but we did have to occasionally push the puddle off the roof because we were worried it would hit a saturation point. If you compare this tent with the more expensive ones, this is a bargain for all its great features. We just bought another one because it outperformed our North Face tent when tested side by side during the rain storm.
I got this tent about two years ago and is absolutely my favorite tent! The design is very simple, and incredibly practical. Setup is a snap and I've been VERY impressed with the waterproof capabilities of this tent. Once I was in a rainstorm so heavy my tent was almost floating but I was totally dry inside. Some may complain it's a bit small, but I find it's actually quite comfortable, even for two. There are two doors so you never have to crawl over your hiking partner. There's also plenty of storage space under the fly. Really the best feature is the light weight and simple set up, things are all color coded, and easy. I've used many many tents in my adventures and this is by far the best!
I have used this tent casually but plan to take it on many hikes. I found just what I was looking for in weight, price, features, and quality in this tent. With one person there is plenty of space for you and all of your gear. With two people things get a little tight but tollerable. I fit myself (190lbs) and two 80 pound dogs in this tent and slept just fine. Fortunately there are two doors and double vestibules which makes this scenario easier to deal with. This tent is easy to set up and has great ventilation. So far I have been very pleased with the attention to detail and quality that REI has put into this product.
I bought this tent a long long time ago and used it maybe twenty times. It has been stored in my bedroom closet for most of its life. Never put away damp or wet and the seems are all delaminating. My huge family tent from Sams club isn’t and Not only has it been used more, I store it in the garage.
The quarter dome ul is extremely easy to set up - slide in its two poles, snap on the fly and you are good to go. It has steep sidewalls that keep damp nylon off of you, and, the dual side doors make getting in and out much easier than the tunnel type tents I am used to. I have found it quite hard to get the tent's weight down to its advertised minimum weight, and is heavier than I thought it would be. It weighs in at significantly over four pounds for me. Because the tent is quite skinny - significantly skinnier than the Half Dome - without an extreme weight savings, I would say it is a real tossup between the two. In the end I appreciate the Quarter Dome's easier setup and the few ounce savings.
In the last 6 months I have backpacked with this tent 8 nights, lived out of it for 15 nights in fire camp, and spent another 6 nights on overnight trips and it has served as a solid home in every situation. Weathered rain, humid heat, and subfreezing nights and was dry with adequate ventilation. Weight is good and space (for one) very adequate (I am 5'8") even when used as a base for two weeks fire duty with all my gear. Set up is a breeze with the deadend pole sleeves. My favorite tent past or present. Would be nice to have a gear loft included or available to compliment the corner pockets but this ommission not enough to keep me from rating this tent 5 stars or buying another should I wear this one out.
My wife and I love this tent. In fact its our tent of preferance when even car camping. The tent is superlight for the size and roling back the rain fly at night to watch the stars is awesome. The one side note is notice I say my wife and I this should be called a couples tent as it might be a little close to sleep two guys unless. But on a plus side if your out by yourself you still have a pretty light weight tent that has alot of room from one person. Also while this maybe my first tent I think it might be our only tent until the kids can backpack.
