alternative to new stem and handlebars

like some other reviews i enjoy my bike except for the handlebar height. on my bike, the delta stem extender raised my handlebars a tad over 2 inches. this small difference made my riding comfort much better. itsaved a stem-o-rama test and new handlebar purchase. my elbows, wrists and back feel better and my bike has better handling characteristics (2009 rocky mountain metropolis). somehow the more upright position feels better taking off from stops as well. some configurations may need spacers to properly secure the stem extension. in my case, i had a stem cap light mount that need to be palced on another part of my bike but this didnt turn out to be a problem.

poor plastic cap ruins a great stem raiser

I recently had to take my handlebars off for shipping my bike. When I reinstalled the handlebars the plastic cap had stripped. Really don't understand why Delta would design a great stem raiser made of aluminum only to literally top it off with a plastic cap. I'm going to take it back today and search for a stem raiser that's 100% metal. So be careful - this stem raiser may work for you initially, but one of these days the plastic cap may ruin your fun.

My wrists and hands no longer hurt

I have a (REI) Novaro Cortona Donna bike. The handlebar was too low for me, even with the seat. To ride the bike all of my weight was in my arms, wrists and hands. I have a torn rotator cuff (shoulder) and the weight and pressure was hard on my shoulder. I ride for pleasure, and needed to be comfortable. My husband installed this, and it took about 1 hour. It was not easy and took some futzing. We had to remove one of the existing rings to get this on, with the screw cap for the stem that is included with this device. I now can ride pain free and there is also less pressure on my lower back. Make sure it will fit your bike.

Rides like a Beach Cruiser

I installed this on my road bike easily. Make sure you have hex tools long enough for the inner top. This made a huge difference to my riding experience. You can you see forward much easier and not look at the ground when riding. Removes neck and back straining. I wish I knew this way back. I almost got a new bike like a hybrid/city because I wanted a more upright position.

Transformed my bike

I bought it to raise my handlebars to gain clearance for a front basket and it did so much more. It completely transformed my bike and made the ride one thousand times smoother. It took weight off my wrists, alleviated numb hands, made checking over my shoulder for traffic easier, and it even changed my posture to make me pedal in a higher gear with less effort. The downsides are minimal. I feel like I have less power when I stand up off the saddle. Also, I am less confident cornering. Those are small things compared to the unexpected benefits of this stem raiser. Plus, I now have a front basket that fits comfortably over my fenders. I am very happy with this product.

Great Product Great Price

High Quality, low cost way to raise handle bars 3". Installation was quick and simple. I installed the Delta Stem Riser on a Novara Safari Touring Bicycle and my arms and hands thanked me. For the Safari, I just removed the handle bar, installed the stem riser, and reinstalled the handle bar; no cable adjustments necessary. I did have to remove one spacer so I could properly tighten the stem screw. Do secure the front wheel to prevent movement. Makes installation so much easier. Yes, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to raise their handle bars.

Good solution

For most of us as we get older the riding position aboard a mountain bike needs to be a bit more upright in order to avoid neuropathy in the hands, cricked necks and low back discomfort. This stem riser straightens you up just enough to make things more comfortable without rendering the bike unuseable for off-road travel. It does not require installation of new cables. You get a lot for just a little bit of money. I installed these on both my wife's and my own mountain bikes just a couple of weeks ago and now we're spending more time riding. Imagine that! 5 stars all the way. Good idea, good design, quality product, simple to install and affordable. Works for me.

good product

I cycle 210 K per week mostly on paved bike paths. I have had spinal fusion at several locations so I am no all that flexible. I have to ride in a more upright position and this allows almost any modern bike to be modified so a more upright position is possible. No complaints, I have installed it on road, mountain, and city bikes. If the stem matches it will fit but you may have to make all the cables that are routed to the handlebars longer. This is a somewhat more difficult job that installing this riser.

Does Its Job

I commute to work almost every day on a mountain bike and I always wished my handlebars were just a tad higher to take some pressure off of my wrists, arms and back and so I could sit a little more upright in the saddle. I was looking at changing out the stem but I saw this Delta stem raiser and figured I would give it a try. It was very easy to install and it does exactly what I hoped it would. Now my commute is much more comfortable! It looks a bit odd the first few times you look at your bike, but I will sacrifice looks for comfort.

works,requres careful installation

This stem riser really helps take pressure/weight off these old wrists. In reading reviews and info from REI I did not see mentioned the necessity (IMO) of using a torque wrench to safely install this riser. The riser is at a critical junction and could create a potentially dangerous situation. It really needs to be installed with a torque wrench after putting bike grease on the bolt threads.

Back and shoulder pain disappears

After riding my new touring bike for over a year averaging 100+ miles weekly, I began to develop pain between my shoulder blades with occasional numbness in my lower arms and hands. I wanted to raise my handlebars up to relieve pressure on my back/shoulders, but the threadless type stem didn't allow for any more height. I discovered the Delta riser at REIs website and then rode my bike out to Redmond, WA store, purchased and mounted it at the store. I set it up so the handlebar was level with my saddle. On my 16 mile ride back home, pain/pressure disappeared immediately. Highly recommend it.
