Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST filter out there! Great filter. Threads onto Nalgene bottle or Dromedary bag for ease of use. Field-serviceable. I usually have to clean the ceramic element after around 20 liters (depending on clarity of water source). It is a simple process to unscrew the top, gently remove the element and give it a 1 minute scrub with the 3M Green pad rinse with clean water, check the diameter with the red caliper/gauge and reassemble. Be sure to pump a few minutes to flush out contaminants before collecting water for drinking. ALWAYS AIR-DRY THE ELEMENT WHEN YOU GET HOME or mold can grow on the ceramic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long lasting, Easy to service. I have had this filter for 4 years now and it is still my go-to filter. I also have a katadyn hiker pro but prefer the MSR hands down. From day one this filter was easy to setup, easy to use, and easy to clean. After every trip I tear it down, clean it up, let it dry, then put it back in a box till the next time I need it. It attaches securely to all my water bottles as well. The long handle gives great leveraged to get water fast. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Miniworks mighty awesome! This year makes the third year that the mini works has been in my backpack. I have tried other filters before and during use of the miniworks and I always go back to it. My two favorite things about this filter: 1.I never worry about the taste of my water, the charcoal filter makes it taste clean every time. 2. I never worry about the quality of the water i am drinking after filtering. I know the water i am drinking not only is safe but tastes amazing. My only complaints if i had to pick any are: 1. The unit can be a little big in the backpack but its worth giving up the room for safe water. 2. It can be slow to pump sometimes, but thats a trade off im willing to take for safe water going through a ceramic filter. If you are thinking about getting this filter i highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Filter Had this filter for a couple years and have taken it on several outings with no issues. It is very robust and easy to use/clean. My only complaint is the amount of pumps/time it takes to fill up your container though it is not a huge deal. I never write reviews but was motivated after getting off the phone with customer service. I called after I dropped a small part down the sink while cleaning my filter. They took my info and told me they would send the part free of charge. Would highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a tough field dependable water filter we had the chance to canoe algonquin park , not to long ago. for water purifications. you have 3 choices. boil it to death/chemical treatment or filtering. we were under a fire ban ,so that left us with 2 choices and we went with the msr miniworks. these are very large wind churning lakes, where there is constant silt and sediment. that will clog up any water filter very quickly. with the supplied scrubber we quickly remedied any slow to pump water. then would rinse the ceramic with the last of the remaining clean drinking water. over several days it came back to life, with in minutes. we are very pleased customers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable and idiot-proof I got this extremely important piece of outdoor equipment 7 years ago. I have used it in all weather and climate conditions in all parts of the world. It always did what it was supposed to do; filter water and keep me healthy. It is easy to clean and maintain. I never bought any spare parts. It ways just under half a kilo. It fits direct on to a drinking bottle. Within a few minutes you have a few litres of fresh water. Even when filtered from a dirty pond. Just remember one thing; don't filter water with a high iron concentration cause those parts close your filter and make it extremely hard to get any water through. Besides that; BUY IT! You'll never regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Water Filter Ever ! I have had this filter for almost 10 years , it is the most dependable water filter out there ! What I like best is the ease and speed at which the filter can be broke down and cleaned, then put back together in less than a minute. The caliper that comes with the filter is a great way to indicate when it is time to buy a replacement ceramic !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best filter ever I've had this filter for about 12yrs, and in that time I've had this filter on EVERY trip into the mountains. My hiking partner counts the ounces he puts in his pack, so he carried Aqua Mirra, I carried my miniworks...I coverted him instantly when he saw the volume it would pump in a very short period of time. I've only had to change the filter once in the whole 12yrs, just by being mindful of the clarity at the water source. This filter is the absolute best filter out there.

my msr ceramic filter has an O ring at top and bottom, will this still work without the O ring at the top?

Asked by: mccow
Should the O-ring fail on your EX Ceramic Element, the MiniWorks filter will not work properly. The O-ring maintains the proper amount of pressure while pumping. The MSR Water Filter Maintenance Kit would be a wise choice to bring along in the field. https://www.rei.com/product/407235/msr-water-filter-maintenance-kit

How do I know when to change the filter? How long should it take to pump 32oz?

Asked by: jimbo colorado
MSR recommends replacing the element if the gauge fits easily over the element at any point.

I've had the MiniWorks pump for about 15 years. Last used it 10 years ago, and the filter worked just fine then. Is there any reason why I would need a new cartridge simply due to old age, or can I still rely on the old one to treat water effectively?

Asked by: caligirl
Your older ceramic filter should still be okay for use. The element is very stable when stored over long periods of time. Just be sure to sterilize the filer before using it. The user manual can be downloaded directly from MSR's website.

Will this fit the msr pump that has a blue top to it? Im not sure what the name of it is.

Asked by: TheWoodsman
The EX Ceramic Element will fit both the MSR MiniWorks and WaterWorks filters. http://www.rei.com/product/695265/msr-miniworks-ex-water-filter It sounds like you have an older MiniWorks based on the color that you described. The EX Ceramic Element will fit the older filters.
