Awesome way to travel with skis
Picked up this case to travel to Europe this year. Loaded it with a pair fat pow skis (Dynastar Cham 117) and a Volkl Mantra. Not sure how other reviewers are trying to put the skis in, but if you follow the instructions and watch the video online the skis fit quite easily with space. It was right under the 50lb airline weight limit, so no charges for an over weight bag and it was pretty easy to wheel through Munich airport along with my other rolling duffle. The case got a couple of dings and scratches in it, but the skis were not damaged.
Sportube Series 3!
I actually bought a Series 3, although it seems to be about the same size as the Series 2. It's well designed and pretty easy to pack skis once you get familiar with it. I also intend to use it to pack scuba gear and read that it works well for that purpose. After seeing an agent tossing around soft ski bags at the Aspen airport, I'm very happy I got a hard case. It got a couple of scratches, but that's pretty much expected. I took only one pair of skis because the airline explicitly demanded only one and help them in place with a couple of backpacking sleeping pads, this worked really well.
Protection +
It can hold the skis & gear too.
worked well
Not cheap, but worked well for air travel. I easily fit two pairs of AT skis into the box, one mounted with Dynafits the other with Fritschi's. I loaded them in "mixed" pairs, one Dyanfit ski tip to tail with a Fritschi mount. It's not clear that two pairs of Fritschi mounts would have fit. Was also able to include some clothing to act as padding. The box collapses to a reasonable size that should fit into most trunks when not in use.
Doesn't get more solid than this!
The SporTube system is a great way to tote skis a long distance and not have to worry about them getting banged up. It's rigid plastic, so it's going to take all kinds of use and abuse from luggage handlers and so forth. It's wheeled, of course, so it's relatively easy to pull around (they could have used a higher-quality inline skate type of wheel, but the ones on there work pretty well in/around most travel situations). About the only real downside to this case... well, there's two. First, if you're packing two pairs of skis and two pairs of poles, with the wider shapes of skis these days it can be a little bit tricky to get the hang of fitting them all into the case. And second, with a soft-sided bag, you can cheat and pack in some ski stuff- gloves and clothing and the like- since you zip that type of bag all the way up. With the SporTube, since it's two big funky pieces that make it up (you have to see it in person to know what I mean), you can't really stuff it as full of items. With the additional luggage fees on planes these days, that kind of sucks- it's nice to cheat and put some gear into the ski bag. BUT... I still strongly suggest using this if you've got two pairs of skis to tote around and are going by air. My fiancee is a flight attendant for a big international carrier and we take at least a few trips a year, and we always use the SporTube.
Gotta get the large one
Great ski carrier for trips by plane. Fits my super long XC skis. It's rugged and durable. The plastic Sport Tube labels on the side didn't even make it one flight before they fell off - no big deal. Even if you're carrying 2 pairs of skis I would recommend getting the double case - extra room for extra padding and clothes etc.
Perfect for the Skiing Couple
I owned the single case, but was looking far a case that would work well with the airlines and allow me to check 2 pairs of skis. This case easily holds 2 pairs of skis plus poles and protects them well against the abuse of air travel. I have also used it to pre-ship skis via UPS and FedEx.
peace of mind for ski trips!
I’ve been flying to ski the Birkie in Wisconsin for several years and due to airline policy on Canada Air had to purchase a hard case this year. For me, this was worth it just for the peace of mind, much less likely to damage my equipment—especially my race poles which I have always packaged in pool noodles in my soft case. For cross country skis, I had no problem fitting two sets of skis and poles inside the soft case then inside the sport tube. Sport tube is so easy to use and lightweight to carry. I’m so glad to have this piece of equipment!
Good protection but way too small
I'm not sure who they're trying to kid but double ski container? Maybe kids skis, maybe ladies beginner skis (no offense ladies) but two sets of men's skis, no way. This would probably work with the old straight planks or shorty parabolic skis but with the current powder ski there is just no way two pairs would fit. Other than that...this thing is bomber proof. Took it to Utah for a ski trip and it protects them without compromise. If you're worried about your skis getting banged up this is the box for you.
Roomy and Solid
This double ski box has plenty of room for my East Coast skis and a set of Fat skis for powder so when I ski out west I have my choice, very good investment.
