I kept a tube of this stuff with me for a while and need to use it last winter. Forecast was for no rain but cold. Well, that changed and we were stuck in freezing rain with snow flurries at night. Very little of anything was dry. I used bout 1/4 of the tube and it took a flame quickly and burned long enough to dry out and ignite kindling and smaller sticks. This of course resulted in being able to dry out larger sticks and thus sufficient fire to warm up and relax a bit. Yes, it adds a little bit of bulk and weight but when you need to use it then you wont care about that. If I had to carry only two fire aids. It would be this and a Swedish FireSteel.

this stuff lights dry kindling very well - which isn't saying much. if your wood is wet, you're out of luck. also, i bought a tube of this about 6 or 7 years ago and the tube split and got the good all over my backpack, sleeping bag, clothes - you get the picture. if you're going to buy this stuff, make sure you keep it in a decent ziplock unless you want to smell like kerosene.

Great fire starter

As far as a fire starter goes, you will be hard pressed to find something easier to use than this fire paste. It lights instantly when a flame is put to it, and burns long enough to light any tinder you put to it, and then to get your fire started. It is not designed to catch wet wood on fire. It is not a fire starter log that weighs a pound or two and will burn for 30 minutes. It is simply a paste that makes starting a fire using proper fire building technique far easier. The only downside I have found to the stuff is that the tube is so large. It is actually pretty lightweight, but the packaging is bulky.

Excellent

I have used this to start fires in wet and cold conditions multiple times and it is very effective. Even though it is heavier than I would like I always carry this in conditions where getting wet and hypothermia could be a problem. Think about it - if you are wet and cold and need to start a fire quickly - are you going to be able to create ideal fire starting conditions quickly? For me the answer is no many times. Like others said I found I can't ignore good fire starting practices but this really helps speed things up and makes up for some less than perfect conditions.

Good flame, but doesn't go the distance

I was the first in my group to reach the campsite and was assigned the duty of getting the fire going. As a new purchase, I quickly looked to my fire paste in my pack. While easy to apply to my kindling, the flame would burn out before the wood would catch. I must admit that the paste is highly flammable, but be prepared to go through almost half a tube if you are dealing with any wet or hard to catch woods. The other issue I experienced was having the half filled tube, (now distorted with squeezing) constantly poking into my skin in my pocket. I'd say each place I put the paste burned about 1 or 1 1/2 minutes.

Legalized napalm!

I have used this product on multiple occasions and it never fails. This stuff really is like legalized napalm. However, just because your using this product, doesn't mean that you have to forget the fundamentals of fire starting. Apply the basics, and you won't be disapointed with the speed your fire can be lit and maintained using this product. I have a tube with me on every trip. A+ rating.

Just buy it.

Just get it. It sounds silly, I know, but you'll be happy you do. It is the only store bought fire starter that can actually be started so you can start a fire. So stop staring at the picture and just buy it.

not worth the money

I bought this product yesterday, took it home to light a fire and all it did was burn the paste off the wood (did not even leave a burn mark on the wood). So I took a 7up box I had, put the paste on the box, put paste on the wood, lit the paste on wood and box, did not burn the box did not burn the wood. I am glad that I was not camping out when I tried this product, it would have been a cold and dark night if I had.

Not bad, could be better

The idea is pretty handy, but I like to see a little bit of a more potent concoction (say gasoline with styrofoam melted into it to form a gel). The thing is, the only time you're going to need this is when it's pretty wet, so ideally you want it to pack a punch.
