Pretty so-so
For us, the Yakima wind jammer did accomplish what we thought it is supposed to do, make the roof rack quiet. It did make it less noisy, but not as much as I had hoped for a $30 designer piece of plastic. I guess I should have sprung for the Fairing ...the $85 plastic pieces. Yakima makes good products overall, but when they plaster YAKIMA all over it, free advertising (at a designer price) it seems to me like it ought to be less expensive. A little additional something that makes their product better, that probably costs very little to manufacture, should not be so much, especially when it does work that great.
better than the fairing
i had purchased the recommended fairing size for my car and felt it created much more wind noise than without one with sun roof open. it was very annoying so i gave the windjammer a try and it works very well. the only thing that worries me is anyone can just take it as it just snaps on/off. i first had just one of these and worked very well so i bought a second and it helped just a little more. in my opinion, you probably only need one on a small car like mine (audi s4) but two is better.
Works when you get it in the right angle
The WindJammer is great when you find the "sweet spot". It cuts down wind noise tremendously when you get it right. The hard part is that the angle of it can change due to wind and driving and the angle needs to be just right otherwise the sound from the wind hitting your roof rack can become worse. In my case, I would get a nice loud whistling sound coming from up top. I find myself regularly having to slightly adjust the angle to get it back to the best position. I guess it is something I will just have to live with though while I have this SUV and rack setup.
Silly looking thing actually works
My Sis recently bought a new pick-up, had a Yakima rack installed, and the wind noise was very annoying. So I bought her a Windjammer, since I have had one for several years on my pick-up. It's not perfect--there is still wind noise, and it moves around on the rack. But it works. The wind noise is materially less annoying. She called me soon after she had installed it to tell me how happy she is with it.
A good fairing replacement
I initially bought the fairing when I bought my roof rack, but noticed a combined mpg decrease from 23.7 to 21.7 on my Ford Fusion Sport 3.5L. I thought that changing from the fairing to the Windjammer would help with fuel efficiency, so I switched and my mpg went to...21.7. The Windjammer, if positioned correctly through trial-and-error, will decrease wind noise to that of the fairing and has the benefit of being easily moved when placing mounts on the rack. It does not help with mpg, as it appears the bars and mounts themselves are the culprits and not the form drag of the round bars. I use two, one fore and one aft, for the best acoustic result. It is a worthy option to consider if you do not like the cost, size or fixed position of the fairing.
Cheap solution to wind noise/howling
Using this on my Accord with a Yakima Rack. Without it, I had horrible howling from my rack, loud enough to make conversations on the highway difficult. The windjammer got rid of 90% of the howling. I may try adding a second one as the other review indicates additional noise reduction with 2. Only "con" would be that the product does not completely eliminate all noise, but I suppose that is to be expected.
Sooo quiet!
The Yakima support bars changed my perfectly quiet Jetta wagon into a roaring wind tunnel. I moved the rack forward and back, trying in vain to find a quiet place. No luck. Then I snapped on the Windjammer (in about 2 seconds) and the noise just vanished. This thing is not as ugly as the old Yakima fairings, but works just as well. And, I was able to easily peel off the unsightly Yakima sticker!
Best [$]I've spent in a long time
As other's have said on here and on other rack forums, this eliminated 90% of the wind noise from my Yakima rack system. I am extremely pleased with the WindJammer.
Works OK
I got this to put on my round bar that I put up at the front of the cab of my truck. The noise before I had the Windjammer was unbearable. After putting it on, sometimes the sound would go away and sometimes it would do nothing at all (depending on the angle) but overall it was kind of a disappointment. I feel like having 2 of them would have helped a little more.
