Good: Fast shipping - Bad: shipped used product
Very disappointed to have received a used product from REI. When I unwrapped the windshield straight out of the box I noticed it arrived with scratches and dings across the entire surface. I am going to request a return asap and hope I can be shipped a new product the 2nd go around.
Good for wind noise, bad for gas mileage
Results are a mixed bag for me. I have jetstream bars on my Tacoma. They were relatively kind on gas mileage but quite noisy on the highway. Adding the Yakima fairing turned that equation around. Now the rack is quiet but the empty rack knocks 10-15% off my MPG. That's a big hit for a product that advertised improved gas mileage. I guess that might be true for the old round bars. Certainly not the case with newer areo bars. Tough to justify the price.
Very Easy to Install, comes w/4mm Wrench, over $$$
Pros Pre title, Very Easy to install. Mine 46" Shield fit on Timberline w/58" Bar, almost no Gap (Lucky me). Come w/4mm Hex Tool, not mini hex wrench like those from IKEA. A real deal, so paying over $120 for a plastic, Yakima did the right thing Cons Expensive for what it does. The little rubber sticky pads for you to stick bottom of the shield where it makes contact to your car fell right off before touching the car. Even after clean it very well before applying the sticky pad.
Reduces wind noise but decreases MPG
So Yakima (and REI) say this produce reduces wind noise and reduces drag, the latter of which I assume means it increases mileage/MPG. Not so. Yes, it reduces noise. Quite a bit. But in my 2017 Prius, the MPG decreased about 6-7%, from 53mpg to less than 50mpg. This is actual MPG, not the Prius calculated MPG, which is never correct. And the time with the fairing was about 3,000 miles. As soon as I took the fairing off (because the MPG was so much lower), I realized how much the noise was reduced. But the one tank I had just the rack on the MPG was back up to normal. So the racks alone don't hurt the MPG too much. But I had to put the fairing back on because after having it on for so long, the noise without it was that much more apparent and bothersome. So all in all, kind of a mixed bag. It reduces noise, but obviously doesn't eliminate it, but it also hammers your fuel efficiency.
Yakima WindShield 46
Installed on OEM VW rack for 2014 Passat. Not a perfect fit, but stays put and got rid of 95% of the noise. Only complaint is the cost.
Works perfectly!
Perfect, fit with no issues, I would recommend it with any rack, pretty universal.
Helps reduce wind noice, but....
This product does what it says it will by reducing the wind noice, but it is way overpriced!! I thought it was too expensive to begin with at $99, but now the price has increased to $109.99!! That is outrageous for a piece of plastic!!
Truly improved gas mileage!
I hesitated to buy this, as I’m generally more concerned about the environment over other things. However, not only does it help drastically with wind noise, and I even have the fancy aero bars, it also has been helping with gas mileage! Are usually average 22.7 driving around town, mostly to and from work. I’ve only run it for a half a tank, but so far I’m getting 24.4. Happy customer!
Noise reduction
I bought the 46" Yakima Windshield in the hope that it would reduce the loud whistling caused by the rack with the Kayak components. Unfortunately, there was very little improvement, certainly not enough to justify the $100 cost.
Arrived used and severely scratched
Came used, severely scratched from shipping. Fairing was just placed in plastic bag (no protective film) while hardware was stapled shut in a bag. Looks like a return or factory second.
