Yakima is a penny pinching company..
From my visit to REI, I was helped with purchasing a set of crossbars for my vehicle since I’m new to how they work. From what I learned, you need crossbars, towers, and possibly locks for safety. I purchased all but had to wait a week for delivery for the 48” crossbars. No big deal. I pick up the crossbars, already having the towers and locks and am ready to install, ONLY TO FIND OUT YOU ALSO NEED ADAPTERS. THE CROSSBARS DONT COME WITH THEM. WHY? Why not just include them with the crossbars?? That is a penny pinching move by Yakima. The total price for the cheapest set of crossbars REI offers is about $400 with all the separate pieces added up. I understand selling the crossbars and towers separately, but why would Yakima then not include the appropriate adapters with the crossbars? Cheap move honestly, and all these added up inflated the price to a nice set of Thule Aerobars... The REI associate also neglected to tell me that I needed adapters. Told me the towers were all I needed and suggested I get the locks. I’m tired of going back and forth.
Standard Yakima bars
I have used Yakima round bars on my rack systems through the past 25 years. These are just as reliable and high quality as the others have always been. I would definitely recommend them.
17 years and still going strong
Bought mine in '93 and they are as good as new.
Great fit for a Prius
We use these bars for our Q towers on our Prius to attach a soft side cargo carrier. They are a perfect fit for our use. The bars stay inside the roof line on the car. Yakima's recommended bars are the 58" bars which hang over the sides of the car and I would end up hitting my head on them getting into or out of the car.
15+ Years and Goin' Stron
Bought these in 2001, for my '98 Montero and worked great w/ Yakima towers for many years. Now I use them w/ my 2015 Tahoe and no problems. They seem a little noisy, but would Yakima's other, more aerodynamic options, be any better?
Quality replacement parts!
Perfect replacement bars for our Yakima Series 8 roof rack for our kayaks.
lots of wind noise over 30 MPH
Certainly robust and capable, but not aerodynamic. If you have a kayak or whatever tied down, very secure, but so very loud if driving around with nothing tied down. easy to remove, slightly more complicated to put on the car (Toyota Highlander). get the aerodynamic bars.
Great system!
Worked perfectly as part of a full system with the rain gutter towers, 48" round bars, SKS lock set and Highroad bike rack! Easy to assemble and install with the included tools and instructions as well.
Not described well by REI
Did not work for installing a Thule Cargo Box. I found this out only later after it was already installed and had to pay $60 unnecessarily for having them removed and replaced with other bars.
Excellent Buy
Installed very easy. Directions gave exact measurements for placement on my car (2009 Honda Civic).
