Expensive but work well
Rather expensive. However, I and some friends tried the bulk-sale, genetic brand candles sold online, and those cheaper candles did not melt down cleanly, leaving the lantern completely gummed up with melted wax. So we went back to the UCO brand candles, which seem to be less inclined to that melt down.
Inexpensive and great
These are great and inexpensive for what you get. Cheaper then batteries and will work in any weather. They are great to add a bit of warmth in the cool weather months in your tent. If you use them long enough you will find where to pack them in your pack. I have had them melt from the sun, if I recall once to the point where I ruined them completely in a ziplock bag, and a couple time where they were just mishapped. So just pack them inside where the heat of the sun wont get to them. I haven't tried the beeswax style or the bug repellant kinds. But I am curious to see if the beeswax ones are less likely to melt with the heat of the sun, but don't think the added cost is worth just packing them better.
Good candles with a few minor issues
This is a nice to have item and I have used it backpacking, camping and during a hurricane induced power outage. The light provided is okay, but a bit minimal. Have had the wax melt and get into the mechanism, but cleaning it is easy. If the candle does not burn properly the wax along the outer edge of the top of the candle does not melt. This results in the candle not rising and the wick ends up below the top of the metal cylinder and there is considerably less light. I have had to remove the candle and cut a portion of the top off so when replaced in the holder the wick is again above the cylinder.
If you've got UCO lanterns, these are the candles
They perform as advertised, giving at least nine hours of illumination. If the lanterns themselves are clean, they should burn without issues, but if the lanterns have had some use on them, there may be some spillage down the barrel of the lantern that impedes the ability of the candle's feed spring to function. My only other complaint is that they're available only in packs of three, and I'd like to see them in larger put-ups to save money. I've also used the beeswax candles, which don't seem to burn as easily, and leave a sticky residue on the lamps.
Beware of imitations
A competing store in Southern California sells a candle that looks almost exactly like this, but doesn't work nearly so well. The wick on the other product doesn't burn, so you have to keep blowing out the candle, cutting the wick, and relighting. What a hassle! Candles from REI and it's supplier are so much better! The junk candles have a rounded top. Stay away from them.
Simple and Great
I've bought my first Candle lantern over 20 years ago at REI and have added serveral more over the years. The've beena life saver during power outages at my home. Consistant source or light at my hunting camp and on numberous backpacking, camping and kayaking trips. Simple, reliable light with some added heat for cold weather tent trips. Even added one to my survival kit in a water tight container for touring kayak.
Reliable light source
These work as advertised, getting nine hours of light per candle. I've had a few "misfires" with the candle not feeding properly. These were mostly due to melted wax getting into the spring area. The treatment is to melt the wax away in a double-boiler, and then wipe the pieces clean. The cure is to make sure that the candle isn't disturbed when it's burning, and to blow it out carefully without sloshing the melted wax.
Good for the Money
I've had one of the lanterns for over 15 years verry impressed now as for the burn time the cooler it is the longer it will burn I've had one last for like 11 hours for the price it's a good deal, have used the "bug" candles NOT IMPRESSED, I'd like to try the bees wax ones one of these days to see how they work out.
The little light that could
Great product, recently experienced a power outage and had light to spare! Also acts as a little heat source. I buy extra candles as a backup over batteries that degrade over time!
Good Old Basic
Still a reliable provider of light and a bit of ambiance camping or at home these candle refills for a decades old REI/UCO candle lantern are just right.
