Leave No Trace: Urine has little direct effect on vegetation or soil. In some instances, urine may draw wildlife that is attracted to the salts. Wildlife can defoliate plants and dig up soil. Urinating on rocks, pine needles and gravel is less likely to attract wildlife. Diluting urine with water from a water bottle can help minimize adverse effects. To minimize social impacts and contamination, it is also best to urinate 200 feet from trails, campsites, high-use areas and water sources with a water flow of less than 500 cubic feet per second.

OMG I cannot believe what a difference this little device makes in my over all backpacking experience. I have taken this on 3 different treks this year and could kick myself for not getting it sooner. There was no leaking which I was worried about so that was a big plus. Not having to squat to pee is so nice and much cleaner the stream is always a distance away from you and if you point is downhill never have to worry about anything splashing back on you. I also like that fact that in a pinch you can use it in your tent just have an empty bottle and you are good to go. No more freezing in the middle of the night just to relieve yourself.

Small Cup + Moving Parts = Leak Prone
tanksOnline
The cup is small and does not handle the full stream that some of us have, resulting in overflow. Because the extension tube must be pulled out and pushed back in, the connection of these parts is prone to failure. This design also means that one must handle the item more than one-pieces models to set it up and put it away. Molded hard plastic does not conform to differently shaped bodies and postures. While it is suitable and certainly helpful for many women, there are other products out there that are better designed and less than half the price. I have asked REI to start carrying some of these other products to give its female-bodied customers more options.

Best Product Ever, Design Flaws and All

This thing is so useful. Some drawbacks: The "case" that it comes in is a plastic ziplock bag that I accidentally ripped when opening. Using a couple of ziplocks works well enough, but I'd be a lot more impressed with the price tag for this piece of plastic/pvc if this came with an actual case. The pvc tube....you'll want to slide it in and out after use to fit this thing in a cargo pants pocket or backpack compartment, only you won't want to, because that's kind of gross. It would be better if it had a more flexible, mostly-stationary tube that tucked away without manhandling it. Cleaning it? Someone invent a product for this, and I'll buy it. Take my wallet.

Great product

Decided to try the freshette for a cold weather camping trip. Was not looking forward to dropping 3 layers of clothing to pee, not to mention freezing my butt off. So I took the plunge and got a freshette. Practiced at home twice - it was very simple to use right off the bat. Worked great while camping too. Just be sure to lean forward a bit at the end so all the pee drains out of the cup. Also, wearing a panty liner would help keep you dry if you're not drying off with TP. Overall, not only did the freshette get the job done, the laughs we all got out of it were worth the price of the device and then some.

Awesome F.U.D.

I have purchased quite a few different F.U.D.s or Female Urination Devices and tried quite a few. This stands out as the top of the line product and it has been really helpful when hiking or dealing with gross public bathrooms. The material is really nice/durable, the tubing works great and I have actually been able to use it with snow pants/snow coveralls on. You can purchase tubing and extras online. Great product and I think every woman should own one.

I adore this contraption

I love it. I can't say enough good things about it. It is small, light, easy to use and SO useful. It never seemed right that my boyfriend could go so easily when it was such a hassle for me. Not anymore. Now when we go snowshoeing I don't have to undress half my body and awkwardly hover and hope I don't spray everywhere while freezing my tush off. I also love using it while camping because I feel a lot safer not exposing myself in the dead of the night (who knows what kind of bugs, plants, and worse - people, are lurking?). Just go buy one these and never limit your water intake to avoid peeing as much again.

Wonderful Product

Finally we can pee standing up! This product saved my butt (literally!) on a 2 week backpacking trip in Utah. It is easy to use, though I do recommend practicing at home first. It comes with simple instructions, though my hands got wet every time I used it (maybe I wasn't doing something right?). I used a lot of hand sanitizer and washed when I could, but the convenience of this product made it worth it. On cold nights, I could keep myself mostly covered, and on warm nights, I didn't have to worry about bugs biting me. I would definitely recommend this product, but only to women who don't mind getting a little dirty.

Great item... Breaks easy :-(

great for girls with small bladders who always seem to be looking for a large bush with no snakes. Also great for the average female traveler who ends up in wide open trails with no guarantee of privacy from fellow hikers. Very easy to insert in pants just by unzipping...but then you have to put it away dirty or use your drinking water (do you really want to waste it though?) . I never minded this, but there is one drawback to be aware of... Flimsy plastic breaks easy in a full pack! I taped mine back together for emergency use, but in hindsight I'd probably have bought a spare to begin with!

Would rate more than 5 stars if I could!!

I could do a serious rant here about gender inequality in outdoor recreation, but instead I will keep it mild here and say this this is leveling the playing field! It has changed the way I hike and could be used for many other applications. Its ridiculously easy to use and I've had no leaks or anything. Its small and lightweight and allows you the freedom to urinate anywhere! Can't recommend this highly enough!! Also, for what its worth, my friend who introduced me to the product, accidentally ran hers over with her car and it remained un damaged, so its durable to say the least!

4 Daughters!

Backpacking with 4 daughters can be a challenge...WHEN they all have to pee at the same time! Our youngest is 3- we have her all geared up with her water bladder and backpack. She's a trooper- until...it's pee time. You hold her arms out to squat...and pee just goes everywhere and down the boots. We bought this just hoping it would direct pee at least away from everything. It did this PLUS is super easy to use, easy to clean, lightweight. Love it! I must confess..I personally love using it at nights. Just find a tree like my "spoiled" husband instead of walking a mile to the nearest outhouse! Also great for preventing bugs- no more worrying about ticks jumping onto your tush (or your kid's tush).
